Running 3:11:00 [3]

Long run 32km. Left car at Aboyne bridge with intention of running out the DW to Dinnet, then crossing back towards Glen T etc. Weather was grim - chance for the new waterproof to get a good road testing. Part way out to Dinnet decided to continue further on the DW, then a while later decided just to carry on out until I'd run 16km then go back the same way. Various reasons for that - weather was looking brighter towards Ballater, GPS watch was threatening to die and at least on the DW I had some idea of distances, I was managing to keep a good pace going without having to think too much, and this way there would be no bottling the planned distance. Kept a pretty good pace for the first 20km, slowed a bit after that, then at 25km got into real problems with everything seizing up. Pretty sure lower back is the problem and by the end I was really sore and struggled to keep shuffling.
The burns were all running high and by the time I came back I had to splosh through several inches of water over a 100m section before the gliding strip, completely numbing my feet - no sealskinz on today ;-( Waterproof has gone a long way towards paying for itself in its first week.

Running 25:00 [3]

Trot round the woods at lunchtime. Enjoyable and legs not too bad. Forestry folk in tidying up, so hopefully paths will be clear again soon.

Orienteering race 1:04:00 [4]

Forvie DNC. Really enjoyed this one tonight. Blew out at no 3 despite trying to be really careful, smaller miss at 18, but otherwise fairly clean. Legs didn't feel too bad either.
Wed night luck with the weather again too!
Note - GPS shows me going well off line on the way to 3 and also a poor bearing to 4 where I corrected by the shape of the hill. Reckon those N lines need checking ;-)) Either that or some bearing practice called for.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

To start and back from finish.

Running 2:09:00 [3]

Long run from Cambus bridge - across to Inchmarnoch and tracks towards Ballater, along bottom of Pannanich, S Dee Rd, track through Dalliefour, across Polhollick bridge, paths back to Ballater, then DW back to Cambus. 20.4km. Felt not too bad at the start but tired quickly and the 6km back from Ballater was a slow painful plod. Nice route, especially the section from Polhollick to Ballater which I can't believe I've never done before. Bit of a dreich morning, but could have been wetter.

Running 37:00 [2]

Afternoon jog round the woods to loosen up, first 2/3 with E. Legs sore on the downhill, and tired on the up, but could be worse. Snow / sleet cleared up nicely.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Quads v tight.
Calfs not too bad and rollered.

Hill Race race 43:49 [5]

Devils Burdens last leg run with JK. Great run and a good pairing - pushing each other all the way but never dropping badly. J getting ahead on the flatter bits, but managing to hold my own on the steeper climb and boggy stuff. Surprised to catch the MV50 team of DS and MN at the foot of the descent. Then realised the sole had come off my R shoe and my calfs were cramping as I climbed the fence. Lost the race to the finish from there, but it was probably better for their pride ;-))
3rd ladies team behind HBT and Carnethy - can't ask more than that ;-)

p.s. somehow Ochils FV team must have passed us coming off the hill and took a minute out before the finish - a bit frustrating as we'd worked hard to overtake them on the climb. Would be good to know what the optimal descent route is - thought we'd done well going left of the trees.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Bits and bobs of jogging around before the start. Adrenalin was pumping so didn't need as much w-u as sometimes.

Running 34:00 [3]

Easy round the woods. Legs still feeling heavy on the hills, but hopefully will feel brighter tomorrow for the DB.

Orienteering 1:21:00 [4]

DNC at Potarch. Great technical course and doing some nice O in parts. Unfortunately, too many parts when I wasn't. Overshot 2, attacked 6 off the wrong crag, then shambled 12 and 14. Not to mention a few other wobbles. Really enjoyed most of it despite that.

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2]

Up to the start.

Orienteering 45:00 [2]

Out early to finish off checking sites at Sluie. Much more enjoyable in the dry. Out for 80' ish.

Easy week planned

Sunday Jan 19, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Jogging about the car park while the first 3 relay legs were out

Orienteering 21:00 [5]

Mixed sprint relay at Perth College. Good fun despite the weather. Nothing too technical. Lost a little bit missing the route out of the cp after 12. Otherwise smooth, but not quick enough to hold off Jo S.

Note

Planned to finish off checking tags at Sluie, but got back too late to make it worth going out, and it really wasn't going to be too pleasant either.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

Checking tags at Sluie. Decided to walk round to give myself some recovery, but it was a really unpleasant afternoon and I didn't get a lot of enjoyment out of this. Hope the forest dries up a bit before the event. Out for ~2.5 hr.

Running 2:59:00 [3]

Long run from Braeloine, over the hill path W of Creag na Slice to Deecastle, then back across the track from Tombae to the Mount Keen track and back down Glen T by half way hut. Dreich morning and some squelchy underfoot conditions in places. 25.5km.
This was a bigger run than I remembered (probably last ran it pushing the buggy, so it couldn't be that bad - right?) and a lot of it was a long slow plod. Still tired from the dunes on Wed, and a bit of a niggle in the R hamstring above the knee. Felt stiff and uncomfortable on the climb back from Tombae, but thankfully things improved on the track back from Mount Keen. Did the last 10km in 1 hour, which isn't so bad.
Some good close-up wildlife with a heron untroubled by me and soon after a big herd of red deer crossing the path.

Running 30:00 [2]

Recovery run on the way home at Countesswells for a change. Surprisingly tired after last night - must have worked harder than I realised.
Nice day.

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [4]

DNC at Balmedie. Wanted to redeem myself after last week's fiasco so went for the slow steady approach, really trying to focus and read the map properly. It worked and I got my confidence back. Lost a bit of time in the broom at the south end, but otherwise no real misses. Good building block.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Arrived early (where was all the traffic at Hadagaun?), so no excuse not to get a w-u in.

Strength and conditioning 15:00 [1]

Varied the core routines - getting too boring. Also some rolling on the ITB and inner calf (tender)

Running 1:23:00 [3]

Long run / hill session with J up Clachnaben then along the ridge to the track down to Charr. Down to the point where the track turns "the wrong way" then cut through the heather to join the track back over the shoulder to the start of the Clachnaben path. Mostly feeling ok, but the last hill to the cp was a battle.

Running hills 32:00 [5]

16 x 1' + 1' from the trees up almost to the summit of Clachnaben (could have squeezed another one in at the top).

Running 35:00 [2]

Wee jog round Glen o Dee whilst E doing his course. Didn't fancy O and didn't need any more than this today. Legs tired but felt better once warmed up.

Mountain biking 1:57:00 [2]

Magic ride with E and J from the distillery over to Glen Muick, down the west side of the glen and back along the SD road. Beautiful day and a lovely route.

Running 3:00:00 [3]

Long run from Dinnet - along the river bank to Cambus, DW to forest, 1 1/2 loops in the lower woods, then up to Cnoc Dubh, down to the Muir, loop between the lochs, then back round Kinord a-c.
Set out feeling not great - legs ok, but not enough quality sleep this week. Time seemed to be on a go slow, and this felt like a v long 3 hours. Was hoping to do 30km, did 27.4km in the end and would have struggled to go further. Pace dropped to >7m/km by the end. Felt a lot further than 2km more than the last run, but this was mostly on small paths and rougher ground.

Mountain biking 45:00 [2]

Left foot sore under the arch this morning, so decided to avoid running today.
Lovely spin round Loch Kinord in the late afternoon light. Dinnet Muir did its stuff for the pick-me-up as always.

Running 1:10:00 [3]

Birsemore DNC
Big fail. Up at 4:15 for day at Schipol. Brain buzzing, but not with Birsemore. Logged as a run rather than O, as I did more of the former than the latter. Should know better than to go out when in this state.
Forget it.

Running tempo 42:00 [3]

Feeling tired. Meant to be a quality session so I tried at least to run most of it as tempo, but don't think I was moving very quickly (no GPS to check).
H'head loop.

Running 2:37:00 [3]

Long run from home with the (mostly) good company of E on his bike. To Aboyne on the DW (road round Mr Grumpy), over the bridge and road to Balfour House, track to Ballogie / Pottie junction, road to track through Potties Wood, then DW to Kinker. Sent E home at this point while I did a few km extra up Pitmurchie rd to the big hoose, then back across the fields and woods.
Steady pace with lots of small stops. Feeling ok to ~ Potties, then sore and uncomfortable. Not too surprising after racing yesterday.
25.2km - still a bit short, but getting there gradually.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Good long w-u before the race and short cool down after.

Hill Race race 29:41 [5]

ElBrimick dash. Super happy with this. Set off steady and gradually wound people in. Happy to pass AH before top of first climb, then AM and JM on second climb. Legs seemed to be able to find that extra something when required. A long way off old times (26:18, 2007) but couldn't expect to finish any further up the pack.
A good start to 2014 and no niggles.
First hill race for E too.

Running 1:00:00 [3]

Head torch run with Helen P. From the house down to the river, W along the bank to Drumnagask, road from WHW to White Cottage and then back by the DW. Lovely evening and undoubtedly a swifter pace than I'd have done on my own.
Good to be home finally.

Running 1:35:00 [3]

Welcomed in the New Year with J with a very pleasant run along the beach and back through the forest at Tentsmuir. Neither of us feeling bouncy but going ok on flat easy paths.
Healthy living starts now.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Needed this - it's been missing from nomadic life of the last few days.
