Running hills 32:00 [5]

Headed up Morven with J. Was meant to be the full monty but as soon as we set off we realised that neither of us had it in us. So did 16 x 1'+1' up onto the plateau and that was more than enough. Legs just dead by the end of each minute and breathing not feeling good. I guess last w/e must really have taken something out of me - let's just hope it pays dividends in fitness.

Running 28:00 [3]

Jog / walk up to the big tree to start hills, then back down from the plateau at the end. Enough for today.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Thursday May 30, 2013 #

Note

Short of time - out on fieldwork and then a rush job for work. No harm in some more recovery time

Wednesday May 29, 2013 #

Running 36:00 [3]

With J from tennis courts to golf course, round Aboyne loch and back by railway and castle grounds. Legs not feeling too bad.

Tuesday May 28, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Falling asleep all day - weird sensation

Monday May 27, 2013 #

5 AM

Mountain biking 30:00 [2]

Cycle in with Marie from Oykel Bridge to start of run. Only just made it ahead of C and D.
6 AM

Running 37:40 [5]

Short leg with Marie along the river side. M on a mission and had to work at race pace to stay with her. Just as well it wasn't any longer.
2 PM

Running 1:14:00 [4]

With Ruth from Loch Stack down the river to Rhiconich. Didn't try to go with Rs pace as I knew I wouldn't be able to sustain it - she realised fairly rapidly and dropped back to let me set it. Middle 5km was expected to be trackless but picked up a reasonable trod along most of the loch side. Nice piece of terrain running and felt I managed a steady pace.
6 PM

Note

We made it - Kirk Yetholm to Cape Wrath in 90 hours and ~ 21 minutes
What a performance. Not least the logistics masterminded by DH.

Sunday May 26, 2013 #

5 PM

Running 1:12:00 [4]

With Clare from Lair across to Loch Coulin. Tough climb in the first few km and worked hard to hang in with C. Then a wonderful single track descent through the mountains, lovely riverside and old pine forest. Beautiful route.
6 PM

Mountain biking 25:00 [2]

Cycle out from the end of the run to Torridon.

Saturday May 25, 2013 #

Note

Only 3 1/2 hours sleep but they were good and woke up feeling quite refreshed.
12 AM

Running 56:00 [4]

With Ben from S of Aberfoyle along forest roads N to Aberfoyle. Cracking night with a full moon and a cracking run - pushing each other on at a tough pace. Really enjoyable.
8 AM

Running 1:06:00 [2]

With Aileen from Loch Freuchie on the road up the Glen. First 5 km flat then a 300m climb in the next couple of km. Power walked the hill. Calf niggling a bit after the run with Ben. Feeling well in my comfort zone otherwise. Fantastic day and some lovely views.
Get a rest until tomorrow lunchtime now.
6 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Good stretch and calf massage whilst waiting at Feshiebridge. Felt much better after.

Friday May 24, 2013 #

Note

Too caffeinated up to sleep after the night run. Four hours of rest.
12 AM

Running 1:30:00 [2]

Leg 1 of the Big Relay with Evelyn from Kirk Yetholm. E was still recovering from a bad lurgy and found this tough, especially up onto the hill on the second half if the leg. Pretty wild night and navigation was trickier than expected as the trail signs were hard to see and the path disappeared into fields in various places. Out for a good bit longer than the planned time but the best we could do in the circumstances.
5 PM

Running 49:00 [3]

From Limlithgow to Polmont along the canal with Donna. Lovely afternoon and a good steady pace but not feeling under any stress. Took a good few minutes off our expected time.

Wednesday May 22, 2013 #

Note

Fieldwork at Glenlivet - out and about on the hill for a few hours, but nothing too arduous

Tuesday May 21, 2013 #

Running 45:00 [3]

Steady round the 2 bridges, but wound up to quite a brisk pace which felt good. Enjoyed running steady without any feelings of guilt. Just a bit surprised at how many folk went off to do intervals round the 7 miler.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Monday May 20, 2013 #

Running 25:00 [3]

Short lap of the woods to unwind after athletics. Into recovery mode for the end of the week now.

Sunday May 19, 2013 #

Running 30:00 [3]

Warm-up with TS then picking up a few controls at Potties. Forest lovely.

Saturday May 18, 2013 #

Mountain biking 1:08:00 [3]

To Potties to hang kites for training and home again. Almost took the car, but it looked like it was brightening a bit. Mistake. Got very wet and cold - good call D getting stuff out in the morning.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

Control hanging at Potties

Friday May 17, 2013 #

Running 2:20:00 [3]

Long run from Tower of Ess out the Firmounth, across the bog from the plateau to the track to Fungle, up Carnferg, back to Fungle, Guard and ToE. Great run - best long hill run in ages. Set off steady, got into a real meditative state and managed to run all the hills. Steep section above the top of the Tues long loop didn't seem as bad as I recalled, and the extra climb of Carnferg felt ok too.
Don't know where this run came from, but gives me a glimmer of hope that 2013 Plan A could still be a possibility. Just need to keep building steadily on this.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Thursday May 16, 2013 #

Running hills 32:00 [5]

4 sets of 4 x 1' on the DW hill. First set of hill reps in too many weeks (5!)and I felt it. Never felt comfortable but at least the body seems to be holding up. Feels a bit like I'm starting again.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [3]

Long warm up through the woods, jog back between sets and short warm down.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Wednesday May 15, 2013 #

Running 43:00 [3]

With J from tennis courts out to Bell Wood to check out the bike park then bike by the old road.

Tuesday May 14, 2013 #

Running 45:00 [3]

Glen T 2 bridges widdershins (shock horror - only an 8 year old dare suggest something so radical). Steady run to test out the calfs and knees. Still a sore spot in the R knee but nothing too much to worry about. Felt comfortable, but time seemed quite brisk.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Monday May 13, 2013 #

Note

Wee bit of jogging around at after school club.
Achey knees today - calf feels ok though!

Sunday May 12, 2013 #

Road cycling 49:00 [3]

Home to Crow's Nest by back roads - Craiglash, Glassel, Brathens. Didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, so then stood around getting cold before getting extra kit.

Mountain biking 1:18:00 [3]

Back home along the S side of the river and Slewdrum to Potties and the DW.
Think I worked quite hard in both directions.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday May 11, 2013 #

Running 2:00:00 [3]

Long feel good run from Dinnet. Round the S of the loch, dragonfly loop, to N end of the Muir, track back over the shoulder and down to Cambus, loop to far end, then onto the rw and back to Dinnet. Calfs were both niggling from the start, but didn't seem to get much worse until towards the end when definitely sorer. Left knee also sore ~15'from end. Otherwise feeling good, energy system working and felt like most of my body could have happily gone for longer.
Lovely running conditions. Heard and saw first cuckoo of the year - 1 week earlier than last year.
Right decision not to do BL.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Felt easier than last night.
Post run - R calf feels ok, L calf tender. Ice x 2, gentle massage + streching

Friday May 10, 2013 #

Running warm up/down 16:00 [3]

The long way over to DAP

Orienteering 24:00 [4]

Dess Forest sprint. Not very focussed and lost motivation part way through, until caught by various.

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2]

Jog back home. Left calf hurting again. Meant to be going down to do Ben Lomond tomorrow, but really no point - if my calf is sore after this then it's never going to survive a long hill race. Disappointing, but better to find out tonight than to have a wasted journey S tomorrow. Don't want to trash myself before the Big Relay.
Suspect that current cocktail of medication is messing my system up and I'm just going to have to chill out and see how things go over the next wee while.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Very very stiff. Not good. Going to start stretching every day again.

Thursday May 9, 2013 #

Feel like more R+R good idea at the mo

Tuesday May 7, 2013 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]

DR long GT loop steady. Feeling tired. R calf twinging a bit so taking care coming back.
Rest tomorrow.

Note

Another day in Embra.
Hope the next few weeks will be a bit less frenetic.

Monday May 6, 2013 #

Orienteering race 37:00 [5]

Dorking urban race. Worried to admit that I enjoyed this more than the rest of the w/e. Good thrash round the streets. Nothing too tricky, but some route choices and forward planning paying off. Really good clean run with maybe 1 5s hesitation.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Sunday May 5, 2013 #

Orienteering race 54:00 [4]

BOC relays. Disappointing to lose the WO team. Great first leg by JR. Set off confidently but then fumbled no 1 in the circle, lost confidence and binned 3'. Kind of lost motivation after that with no real reason to race.
Poor effort.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Saturday May 4, 2013 #

Orienteering race 59:00 [5]

BOC at Winterfold. Got thoroughly confused by tarmac'd "track" on way to 1 and lost best part of 2'. Had to fight a feeling of game over at that point but pleased with myself for hanging in there. Missed another 1' at 5 running too hard and not stopping to read the map. Chuffed to claw back to 2nd place by the end.
Didn't have any great expectations of this w/e - you generally get what you've worked for. Need to decide how to approach the 6 days - will enjoy it more if I know I've trained for it, but am not sure I'm motivated enough to make it a real target.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Friday May 3, 2013 #

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

BOC warm-up event at Guildford. Was good to get out and remind myself how to O before tomorrow. Better late than never.

Wednesday May 1, 2013 #

Note

Rant
How is it that you can Skype from a log cabin in S Turkey to the middle of the woods in Deeside, but an international research organisation can't manage to set up a sensible video conference from their headquarters in Aberdeen to a university in Denmark? Something going wrong somewhere.
Frustrating day. Embra tomorrow. Not exactly the best prep for BOC. Hey-ho was always going to be so.

Running 32:00 [3]

With J from tennis courts out the TW and round about Aboyne Castle grounds. Feeling spaced out but legs pretty fresh.
