Running intervals 24:00 [4]

4 x 4' + 2' in Glen T. Hamstring feeling tight from start but seemed to ease off. Skipped the last rep to jog up the track with E.

Running 50:00 [3]

Rest of the run round the Glen T 7-miler. Hamstrings feeling uncomfortable again after intervals, but suspect it's my back that's the problem.

Hamstring not sore at all in stretching.

Running 3:20:00 [3]

Long run from Dinnet, across Muir, up track from N end, Cnoc Dubh, loop of Cambus, across the Cran Burn, Tullich Church, DW to Cambus bridge, back up Cnoc Dubh, main BoV track and back ac-w round the loch. Went pretty well. Tiring a bit by 2h, then bumped into Campbells and stopped for a chat. Felt good when I set off again and managed to run all of the 2nd Cnoc Dubh climb. Slowish plod back round the loch with lifting muscles having given up, but no significant aches and pains. As good as I could hope for.
Stayed dry and sunny for the first 3 hours but got caught in a heavy shower at the end.

14 x 1' + 1' on the beach at Findhorn. Wasn't really what I had planned but E wanted to build another sand castle. Kept my shoes on this time but feet felt fine. Legs more tired than I expected.

Mountain biking 1:45:00 [2]

Cycle with E from Findhorn to Brodie Castle by back roads. Then back with a detour up to the edge of Culbin. Easy ride. Steady pace mostly on flat roads. Out for 2h 45m.

Running 1:55:00 [3]

Ran a section of the Dava way from Dunphail to Dava and back, with E on his bike. Was uphill on the way out and the path stoney in places, so progress was slow for E, but he made me work harder on the way back. Total times 88' out and 52' back.
Felt better than expected after yesterday but feet are a bit tender from bf intervals. Will give them a rest tomorrow.

Have been promising E a trip to the beach all hols, so no getting out of it with lovely blue skies this morning. Walked from Findhorn to Roseisle along the beach and then back by the Coastal path (~2h)
10 AM

Barefoot running intervals 30:00 [4]

10x2'+1' reps bf on the beach. Lower legs and feet worked harder than heart and felt tired after. A lone seal played on the beach at one end of my reps while a lone boy played at the other. Both seemed pretty content.
11 AM

Running warm up/down 27:00 [2]

Warm up in the forest and then splashed along the edge of the sea after with E. Not feeling hot enough to be tempted into a dip.
5 PM

Running 33:00 [3]

Short jog with J down to the beach and back through the shingly bits. Suffered a bit of a slump this afternoon and hoped this might help pick me up.

With E round some of the Moray monster trails. Long slog up big tracks then some nice bits of single track but mostly rather tame compared to other blue trails we've done recently. Feeling tired.

Round the dunes by Findhorn while E messed around. Hard work on loose sand.

From home to WHW, Bell Wood, Aboyne Loch, across Coull to TW, Aboyne Castle and back by the railway. Not feeling great. Got going ok after 30' but then tired at around 90' and sore muscles again. Tried to push the last 15' back along the railway.

Good week in Glen Urquhart. Mostly low intensity but coping with the volume fine and injury niggles seemed less at the end of the week than the start. Feeling whacked today, but hope to recover enough for a quality part 2 at Findhorn next week.

Round the green and blue trails at Abriachan again with E. Feeling really tired this morning for the first time this week.

5 x 2' + 2' on the hill from the cp at Abriachan. Wasn't sure how this would go, but got better and felt stronger as the session went on. Could have done more but decided to stop while it still felt good.
Rest day tomorrow.

With E from the cp at the end of the Affric road along the south side of the loch and back the same way. Track both hillier and rougher than I remember from running it!
Also a 1h walk round the Dog Falls loop.

Running 3:10:00 [3]

Long run from Drumnadrochit to Tomich via Corrimony (18m or so, mostly good track but a long boggy squelch towards the end). Grot day - low cloud and rain - so just got the head down and ran. Felt good for the 1st hour, ok for the 2nd , then having to focus more for the 3rd, but never desperate. Lots of niggles but no cramping and energy system felt good. Muscles just seem to get sore after 2h. Another couple of runs like this and GwC might seem less daunting.

Got dropped at the end of Loch Meiklie for a short leg loosener run back to the hostel. Felt awful at the start but improved a lot after 10'.

With my training buddy E on his bike. From Dog Falls cp on big forest tracks c-w round towards Tomich and then over to Loch Beinn a Mheadoin. Went well after a slow start up the first hill until the long climb up and over from Tomich towards the loch when E started to run out of steam and encountered his first problems with bikers bum. So walked a lot of the hills, but it was all time on feet and great to have company. Nice day too. Out for 2h 20m in total.

Note

Walk with E down past Plodda Falls and on through big tree country. Out for ~45m.

Orienteering 1:38:00 [3]

INVOC event at Rogie, brown course. Off to a bad start when I realised I'd taken 2 right O shoes with me - dohh. Plodded round in my walking shoes which were actually ok to run in. Lost 5' in the circle at 3 and again at 12 on the wrong spur. 11 wasn't there ( in the wrong place) and the map was v strange around 10 and 6. So not a great run, but enjoyed it all the same.

Went for a walk with E up the hill from the Abriachan forest. Out for an hour or so. A few tweaks in the back but no major spasming - fingers crossed! Knee still complaining but ignoring it for now.

With E round the green and blue trails at Abriachan. Really fun. Nice trails with some tricky loose descents.

Then messed around on the skills park area. Not as brave as E but then he bounces rather than breaks like I would.

Cycled back down to Drumnadrochit from Abriachan on the GGW. Was more than a bit hairy on the steep muddy descent, especially as my brakes got more and more useless. Was tired from nervous energy and clinging on by the time I got down.

Running 1:43:00 [3]

This should have been a 2 1/2 h run. From Torphins with J up onto Learney Hill and round a big loop. Felt rubbish at the start but could blame that on being too early for me (9:30). After 15' started feeling my knee again ;-(( Hamstrings were v tight too and was just a slow slog up the hill. Back to the car in 82' and decided to call it a day, but once I got home tried again in the woods and managed another 20' loop.
Very frustrating as should have been feeling fresh after an easy week. Still really struggling to get my distance up where it needs to be for GWC and starting to think I may need to drop to the 13m. Having thought that through as an option, intend to try and chill out now and see what I can do in the next couple of weeks hols with E as my training partner.

Note

Everything seized up later and lots of spasming from lower back / bum. Not so good.

Short easy run in Dundee to test out knee. Out the back of the conference centre and up onto Balgay hill / observatory. Feeling good and tempted to go further but managed to resist. Survived descent ok too.

Running 2:22:00 [3]

Long run from Aboyne. First 50mins with J on a loop out round Balnagowan. Then headed back out to try and cross to Coull behind the castle but failed to find the route I was looking for, so cut through grotty fields and scrappy land to reach otter bridge eventually. Then up onto Mortlich (walked much of the climb) and back over Queen's Hill. Came all the way back the new bridgeless DW and splashed across the burn (to the amusement of the DW construction team). Was going to stop and sit in it to cool my legs, but decided the guys already thought I was mad enough.
Bit of a plod and would have liked to make it a bit longer.
Going to ease back now and hope that the knee settles down by next w/e.

4 x reps of the hill from side of Aboyne Loch up to the path entrance into Coull. 3:57, 3:56, 4:05, 4:04, with jog back recovery. Felt a bit better after the first one, but tired by the end (thought I did a good pace on the last one). V humid. Undergrowth dry but path still v wet in places.

To and from Aboyne loch from the tennis courts. Saw an osprey dive for a fish in the loch just metres away. Then watched it circling around being mobbed by a seagull, so I guess it must have caught something.

Up Mount Keen. E setting the pace after an early winge. Mum getting left behind ;-)
On the top in an hour by 09:30.
Back down the glen on the bikes passing heaps of folk heading up, and back to the car by 11:30. A successful and DRY expedition.
5 PM

Running 28:00 [3]

Short run round the woods including 3 hill climbs. Felt I needed a bit more and still had some energy, but R knee a bit sore again (felt it last night - cycling?).
Raining again.
