First session back. On the rollers this term.

Running 1:28:00 [3]

From the bridge up the cistern track then on small paths across Birsemore map (back in bounds again -yey) to upper track. To top of Carnferg from junction with Fungle (11' mostly walking, but pushing hard). Down off track on N shoulder and cut across to Fungle. Good run. Legs felt tired on climb, but probably not helped by pilates.

Intervals round the roads in Aboyne with DR. Pyramid of 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1' with 1' recovery and 2' after the 2s. Felt ok for the first one back. Didn't flog myself too much.

Walked with J and E from Bagno Vignoni up to the road leading to Ripa d'Orcia. Then ran back down to the river (10'), and up the other side to the top of Rocca d'Orcia (30'), then back down the road to Bagno Vignoni. Great run. Felt good on the hill after the first few minutes and managed to run all the way up.

Note

Rounded off with paddle number 5 in the thermal pools at Bagno Vignoni - bit chilly for full immersion.

Note

Walked the Monte Cetona traverse with J and E up to the summit, then carried on with E while J went to take the car round. Cloud cap on the mountain so not much in the way of views, but good walking from E. Out for 2.5 hours.

From the 911m pass above Cortona, east along the ridge on the route 50, then up to the summit of M Castel Guideo and down to meet J and E on the road at the col below. First day of poor weather. In the cloud for must of the run and then heavy rain for the last 15 minutes of descent. Would have been lovely otherwise.

Disappointed to discover that the main Maremma reserve was largely shut due to fire risk, so parked by the beach at the N end and ran in from there. Tried to find a path on the map but should have stayed on the beach. Magic umbrella pine forest but undergrowth not so good for running through. Found the path up a rock face to one of the towers from where there were superb views. Saw piggies number 2 and 3 running back towards the beach from the foot of the rocks. Almost stood on number 3 snoozing under a bush. Brilliant stolen run.

Note

Followed up by a blissful swim and splash in the sea with E. Saw and photographed piggy number 4 (not very wild) hanging around the picnic spot.

Learned from J's experiences and managed to follow the marked trails through the S end of the Maremma reserve from Toremone. Out along the W side of the ridge, dropping to a bay at the far end, and then back round the E side of the hills. Included ~400m climb. Nice run.

Followed up by a swim in the sea off the rocks - wonderful

From Castel Azarro up to the summit of Monte Civitella. Managed to find a good track all the way with a steady gradient. Felt ok for a post lunch run.

Note

Walking from Sovana to tombs etc. with J and E. Splash in the thermal waters at Saturnia after the run. Warm but a bit sulphury.

Up and out of the house by 08:00 for a loop of the tracks down the hill and across the road. Felt pretty good for that time of day and very virtuous.

Note

With J and E walking from the house up to the tombs, into Sarteano, round and about the village, then back down from the castle via the mills. At least a couple of hours or so on foot.

Already feeling tired after two longer than planned runs, so just a short loop of the hill W of the parking at Pietraporciana. Managed to get disorientated just like last time, but figured things out eventually.

On the slopes of M Amiata. Actually managed to find the tracks I was looking for - a first I think - although the map was definitely lying about the height climb (400m+ by my reckoning). Descended through terrain and managed to spike the end of the right track too. Still wonderful forest. Lots of chestnuts but no piggies.

Followed up by a wee walk to the summit of Amiata with E and skinny dipping in the Bagno San Phillipo hot springs - brill day.

Got dropped on road to Chiusi and ran down dirt road to Lago and then along cycle track to Chiusi Scalo. Was a good deal further than the map suggested. Took a short cut at one point which kind of worked - only ended up with a few metres of bramble to negotiate. Lovely bright morning.

With J and E from Lago di Chiusi to Lago di Montepulciano and back. Hot - glad of tap at bird reserve to refill water bottles. Out for a couple of hours.

VHI relays at Coull. Big disappointment with course combinations all wrong. Ended up on a 2 km short course. Ran clean and was fun but not counting for anything.

VHI individuals at Birsemore. Small mistake at no 2 <1' but otherwise clean. Just took it really steady. Sounds like Scotland ahead after day 1. Happy ;-}}

Bits of shadowing and control collecting at junior training at Balnagowan. Dreich morning and legs still not feeling very bright.
4 PM

Mountain biking 50:00 [3]

Out through the woods and trees to the top of the "Bullevard" which has completley disappeared under a broom forest. Fought a way to the field and then picked up the track further down to cut across to the military road. Left along this to the Lumphanan road, round to DAP and back over through the woods. Squelchy under wheel but brightened up nicely over head. Good ride.

With J and E. Glen Muick from road corner by bridge out on a track through the forest, up to the N end and the fish ladder, then back down the valley bottom track. Low cloud, rain and squelchy on the tracks but a good ride.
