Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Sluie planning, checking the state of the forest and control sites. Mostly snow free now. Felt dreadful - cold hasn't developed but feeling heady and brain really wasn't focussed on the job.
Right knee sore after yesterday's run and not right today.
1 PM

Note

Had a walk up at Forvie with J and E, round the coast then collecting controls 10-18 from Night O on the way back. Found them all, but 5 of the 9 were at least 50m from the correct location.

Running (road) 1:16:00 [3]

Lap of Learney Hill on back roads with J. Mostly ice and traffic free. Felt rough up first hill, but better after settling into a steady pace. Think I might be going down with a cold though.

Note
(rest day)

Travelling home.
Some serious detoxing required over the next week or two. Far too much good vino, coffee and cuisine. Not sure I could survive more than one week of a Dunn clan gathering.

Tuesday Dec 28, 2010 #

Note

Very muddy cycle with youngsters on the cycle track from Lago di Chiusi. Track was completely flooded in one direction and a complete clay mudbath in the other. E was not impressed.

Running (Mixed) 1:50:00 [3]

Full traverse of Monte Cetona in the late afternoon with J. Got to the top just as the sun was setting. Magical distant views to snowy tops of the Appenines. Wasted a bit of time coming off the hill where the track had disappeared under felling and undergrowth. Ran back to the village and home by the tombs with headtorches.
Good end to the holiday.

Monday Dec 27, 2010 #

Note

Lovely bright day at last. All headed over in the Monte Amiata direction to check out hot springs (not very) and picnic. Had a short walk after lunch with J in the snow up a minor peak. Very pretty but few views beyond the forest.
Couldn't be bothered to run later.

Running (Tracks / paths) 1:40:00 [3]

Got dropped with J in the valley bottom below Cortona. Ran up tracks to Le Celle where we missed our track up the hill. Doubled back and found it , then made another mistake before reaching the junction with the track from Torreone just as the rest of the Dunn clan appeared from that direction. Carried on ahead up the Strada Basaltica to the top road, then along the ridge to a high point. Doubled back to the road to meet the others for a bracing picnic. Weather was brighter but not warm and was feeling very chilled when we walked back down to the cars. Felt rubbish running - stomach had felt dodgy earlier on.

Saturday Dec 25, 2010 #

Running 40:00 [3]

Pre breakfast run with J. Out to Cetona road via olive groves and lower track, up the zig zags on the road to the top track. Felt rubbish as ever at this time of day.
Impressive waterfall in the stream below the house - that's not normally there when we visit.

Friday Dec 24, 2010 #

Note

Walk up Monte Cetona from the S end with J, E and Hardy clan. Cloud down, no views but dry overhead. Back the same way. ~2 hours.

Running 45:00 [3]

Late afternoon run from the house. Down porcupine alley, out to the road, loop across the other side and back by the middle track. Wet wet wet. Legs felt a bit better though.

Thursday Dec 23, 2010 #

Running (Track) 55:00 [3]

Up to Sarteano by the paper mill, round the castle, then back down via the tombs. With J. Feeling pretty lethargic.

Wednesday Dec 22, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Travelling out to Italy.

Tuesday Dec 21, 2010 #

Running 1:50:00 [3]

Magic run up Morven with J in fantastic conditions overhead and underfoot. Snow was mostly soft powder on older ice and crusty stuff. Variable going but never desperate. Dobbs were good for the icy bits. Classic winter day in the hills. DR run tonight will be cracking with a full moon too.

X-country skiing 53:00 [3]

On Aboyne golf course. Was on my fishscales which balled up on the first circuit, but stayed down the bottom section and did 3 more laps which improved significantly each time. Was working quite hard on the 3rd and 4th laps. Fun !

Sunday Dec 19, 2010 #

Running 35:00 [3]

Headtorch run round the woods and fields with J. Legs not too bad.
Snowy walk round Dinnet Muir with J and E earlier in the day.

Saturday Dec 18, 2010 #

Running (Roads) 1:40:00 [3]

Down to Kinker, Pitmurchie road, Torphins, S Footie road over the top to Kinker and back along the road. Roads were white the whole way and a bit slippy but ok running. Climb back over to Kinker was tough as wasn't getting enough traction to push up. Felt much better than yesterday but very tired by end. Started out cold but nice, but snow came over on the way back.

Running 30:00 [2]

Should have been out for a long run with J today but school shut for 4th Friday in a row. As it was didn't get far as I realised I was flogging a dead horse. Better off getting some R & R. Plenty of time in the holidays to get out to play.

Note

Not chuffed to be DQd on Wed as certain that controls were wrong. Interesting to note that several people ended up too far N of 14 coming from 13, whereas it was dead on line from where 13 should have been.

Thursday Dec 16, 2010 #

Running 30:00 [3]

Relaxed run round Aboyne while E at Beavers. Skitey underfoot.

Orienteering race 1:04:00 [4]

DNC at Forvie. Now this was more like night O should be. Cracking area for it and great technical course. Just a shame that not all controls were where they should have been. Had a great technical run up to no 11 where I lost ~1'. 10 wasn't right but was easy to see. Lost focus a bit going across to 12. Thought I was a bit low but as I climbed to where the control should be I spotted a glint ahead. Ran towards it until it jumped up and hopped away. Met J when I doubled back and after relocating to the same spot carried on to 13 except it wasn't there either. Had lost my zone by then but found the rest of the controls ok. Felt good running ( extra afternoon coffee?) but calfs cramped a bit towards the end.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Decent warm up for once while waiting for the planner.

Running 25:00 [3]

A shuffle round the woods with J much too soon after lunch.

Sunday Dec 12, 2010 #

Running (Roads) 1:40:00 [3]

Wanted to get settled into a steady run, so decided to try the roads. From home, towards Kinker, cut across to the Pitmurchie road, towards Tornaveen, then down to Lumphanan (reverse of Detox), then on to DAP to meet J and E for lunch. Tornaveen road was a bit icy and the church brae was lethal - had to walk down. Otherwise a good run and stopped for a nice natter with Bill.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Walk / jog back from DAP. Can't believe we held a ski O here just last week.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday Dec 11, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Legs are tired but nothing specific.
Walk up Scolty with J and E.

Friday Dec 10, 2010 #

Running 1:35:00 [4]

From Tower of Ess up Glen Tanar, 2 bridges, return by mill pond, then over to Dinnet to meet J and E. Relentless. Mix of everything - bare track, slush, ice, soft and compacted snow - but never got into any comfortable rhythm. Reckon I must have worked everything, so it'll be interesting to see what hurts most tomorrow.
Had hoped to have a day out with J but a combination of the melt and Kinker Leaks put paid to that.

Running intervals (snowy / icy tracks) 24:00 [5]

Benefit of jacking last night was that I actually felt like running today and even managed to do some intervals. 12 x 1' + 1' at H'head. Tracks are starting to get icy but distances were a bit better than Tues even so.

Orienteering race 45:00 [3]

DNC at Shooting Greens. Well this was just too tough for me. Ploughing through the snow completely distracted me from navigating and I made a real arse of 1 and 2. Hit the boulder near 1 straight off, but then did a big loop in the wrong direction before coming back to the same spot. Managed to get below the ride going to 2 despite having climbed lots (I thought) and dropped way low before climbing back up to it. Almost jacked then, but made myself carry on - big mistake. The swim through 4ft of snow across the open towards 3 was on the verge of lunatic. Legs quickly froze and when I caught my foot a couple of times, I thought I wasn't going to be able to get out. Freaked me a bit so did the sensible thing once I got to the other side and bailed out to the road.
Felt a bit of a woos, but less so when J finished having done 16' / km and looking pretty out of it. Glad none of the youngsters were out tonight.

Tuesday Dec 7, 2010 #

Running intervals (snowy paths) 20:00 [5]

10 x 1' + 1' round H'head on compacted snow which gave fine grip even in road shoes. Legs feel generally heavy from skiing but good to get them moving a bit quicker.

Running warm up/down 24:00 [3]

To and from H'head. Golf course still looks great for skiing - maybe later in the week.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 35:00 [3]

Down to the waterfall, planned on crossing the new bridge to the road, but the bridge has been removed - spoil sports. So carried on round the bottom track to Iain's. The track above his house is an archway avenue of bent over birch trees. Carried on to the top gate and back home round the road. Great day. Snow's crunchy enough for running to be ok ish.

X-country skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Before, during and after the ski O.
Conditions changed big time overnight and snow was much much trickier to ski today with a nasty icy crust. 36 skiers and 1 snowshoer went round the forest and all seemed to have fun.

X-country skiing 1:15:00 [3]

Hanging controls for ski O. Out for a good deal longer in total. Lots of branches down in the woods messing up our lovely tracks. Still good skiing though and tracks speeding up a bit.
3 PM

X-country skiing 30:00 [3]

Managed to drag E out and skiied out by the main track and back by the traverse, which E handled fine. Then did another quick loop up to the top of the hill.

X-country skiing 1:35:00 [3]

No new snow so tracks are improving, although a lot fell off the trees yesterday. Excellent loop round various tracks, then skiied over to DAP with J and E for lunch - very civilised. Got back from there in 16' by the main track and traverse. Yee ha ;-}}}

X-country skiing 1:10:00 [3]

Another 20cm of snow buried the tracks again. Hard work, but I think we went over them all again between us. Just unbelievable out there now. Glad we got to the shops yesterday.
2 PM

X-country skiing 45:00 [2]

Managed to drag E round one of the big track loops filled in again even since this morning !
10 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Lots of aches on my right side today - knee, bum, hips. Combination of skiing and last nights O. Feels better after stretching.

X-country skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Round the woods again.Tracks just keep disappearing under more snow - going to have to keep skiing ;-}
12 PM

X-country skiing 30:00 [1]

Finally escaped from the woods - had to get to the shops to replace the olives and sun-dried tomatoes ;-] Roads are still pretty rubbish - don't think schools will be back 'til next week ;-{
Ventured up to Cambus - forestry vehicles had been in yesterday and compacted the main track. Did a couple of short loops slowly with E and J. Nice - but not really any better than our woods.
6 PM

Orienteering 59:00 [4]

Night O at Raemoir. Can't believe DK went ahead with this, but there were 27 people daft enough to turn up. Missed no 3 but otherwise a trench run through thigh deep snow. Tough going, especially after too many hours on skis. Fun though, and beer and chips after were good ;-]
