E in school 'til 2:30, so time for a lunchtime run with J. Up Pressendye from McRobert estate office. Not feeling great before we started, but settled into it and managed to run all the way up, so can't have been too bad. 43' to the top. Returned via hill race route on good tracks and road. Ran in road shoes and feet felt fine - I think my old Inov8s are heading for the bin.

Hanging a few controls for junior training at Tilquhillie. Map badly needs redoing.

Road cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Home from Tilquhillie via Feughside and Burn of Cattie. Legs felt sore initially (ITB?) but eased off into the ride. Only just enough gears on my road bike for the Corsedarder hill but great flying down the other side.

Decided to give my feet a rest. Not as sore as yesterday, but tendons on outer ankle of R foot feel tight. Ice and massage.

Running 2:10:00 [3]

First long run for a couple of months. From Birse. Up big forestry track to top of forest. Down to Glen Cat then up Forest of Birse track. L at the top round Lamahip then across to Craiglash. Wasted some time here trying and failing to find a path up the slopes to the W. From Craglash onto forest tracks and down to Glen Cat then round E edge of forest by Bogieshiel and drop to Balfour House track. A bit early for me and feeling sluggish to start with, then struggling later on with the distance.

Note

Soles of feet have been feeling a bit tender. 2 hours after the run R foot is quite sore under the arch. Time for some new shoes I think.

From Aboyne Loch. Through the woods to the steading, up the (badly overgrown) path by the plantation, L towards the bottom of the Mortlich climb (getting badly overgrown too), back down to the big bog, through the woods on the wee path then anti-clockwise round the loch. Still tired from Tuesday's run but a pleasant plod.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [3]

DR at Glen Tanar. Did the big loop with pyramid intervals. Felt tired on the way back from the top of the hill and felt tight around the hamstring insert / bum. need a good stretch tonight.

Running intervals 30:00 [5]

1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1' reps with 1' recovery (2' after 4). Well off the back of the lads on the long reps, but at least they came back to find me now and again. Good to get a proper session out of the way.

First pilates class since the start of the summer. Gentle start but can feel that my core's been working.

Didn't manage to get out for a run again. Just too much going on at the mo. Hope we can start to get back into some sort of routine now.

Checking the remainder of the tags in Glen Dye. Seemed like a different forest today. Very pleasant.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Short of time at work again, but got out for a run at home. Jogged over to the far side of the woods then did some reps on the flattish section of track.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]

10 x 1' + 1'. Felt slow at the start but was getting 20-25m further on each rep by the end. Really do need to keep the speedwork up. Felt good by the time I got home.

Stopped off on the way home from work and ran up the E end of the Hill of Fare to the mast. Up the long way round by the big track in 30', then straight back from the top. After the first few minutes up the hill settled into a good steady rhythm and felt pretty good. Hadn't done this run for ages and really enjoyed it. Think I might start to do it more regularly now that I don't have E in the car with me on the way home.

Checking tags in Glen Dye for Sep event. Plodded round slowly, badly lacking in energy and with poor concentration. Not sure why. Gave up after a couple of hours, so will need to go back and finish off later in the week.

Time to start training again.
Ran up Carnferg with J. Parked at the bottom of the Cistern track. Ran E along the road, up the big Birse track to the top, S from the top then back down the Fungle and Cistern. Feeling OK and I don't think the pace was too bad.

Walking 1:30:00 [1]

Family walk from Inveralligin to Diabaig. Only 5-6km but took 3.5 hours or so - a real NW walk and E did very well (proud mum). Don't normally include walking in training but felt too knackered to consider a run after this. Enjoyed a cool dip in the sea instead. Didn't realise the others had wetsuits until we were starting to get changed ;-}

Very easy family cycle with the Hardy clan in Applecross. Peeing down as we got the bikes ready, then dried up nicely for the ride.

Running 35:00 [3]

Run with J from Loch Carron up the hill behind the house, through the plantation, out to the golf course, then back along the beach. Very wet and squelchy underfoot. Feeling a lot bouncier than on Monday.

Orienteering 1:11:00 [4]

S6D Day 6 Loch Ordie. Feeling really weary now. Dug in as hard as I could and ran a fairly steady race. Missed no 6 with a really stupid mistake (2') which was just because I'd been pushing too hard. Otherwise fairly clean. Not surprised to be a bit off the pace though. Finished in 7th overall for the week and reasonably happy with that.

Orienteering race 46:00 [5]

S6D Day 5 Barry Buddon. Feeling lethargic before the start. Hesitant through the first few controls, but didn't miss too much. Started 2 minutes behind Heather G and caught her at no 4. Realised there was the chance to help each other if I could manage to keep up with her. Let her lead to begin with, but making sure I was still in touch. Focussed more once we got into the fiddly bits again and led through 10-14. Heather got away a little at 18, but Ciara had appeared from somewhere to keep me working hard to the finish. Dead chuffed to be 2nd to Cecilia Bratt on the day taking lots of scalps including Pippa. Don't know how I managed to pull a run like that out of the bag, particularly on such a fast area.

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [5]

S6D Day 4 Tentsmuir. Chasing start on W21E. Started close behind Ciara and passed her at 1, despite a minor wobble. Clean until 5 where I didn't have a good attack point and wobbled into 6 as well and was recaught by Ciara. Together more or less (despite her significantly faster leg speed on the tracks) until 13 where I seemed to get away in the green. Hesitant into the controls in the green, but avoided any significant time loss. Really pleased with my run - 5th on the day and pulled back some time on a number of people.

Cycled into Perth to the swimming pool with E on the tag-along. On J's bike so not very comfy.
Enjoyed chilling out and watching the sprint race in the afternoon.

Orienteering race 1:41:00 [4]

S6D Day 3 Tullochroisk. Was really looking forward to this, despite the crap weather and an early start. Started well - really smooth through 1-3. Missed 4 badly with a parallel error and ended up much too high (3' ?). Stupid mistake overshooting on 8 (2'). After crossing the road and climbing up to the col (out almost 1 hour) started to struggle badly physically and made lots of really silly errors (12 - 2', 13 - 1', 15 - 1', 17 - 1' on route, 18 - 2', 21 - 30", 22 - 2'). Very disappointing. Had intended to take some jelly babies but forgot to buy any on the way - I think that could have made a big difference.

S6D Day 2 Kinnoull Hill. Much more attacking race today. Missed no 1 ~ 1.5' - vegetation mapping seemed a bit odd. After that settled down into a good race with just a few hesitations. 7th.

Orienteering race 1:20:00 [4]

S6D Day 1 Dalrunzion. 2nd elite off on the WRE. Caught the first starter at no 3. Missed no. 5 - bang on line but looked for the crag at the green boundary when it was a contour up the hill. Looped round and attacked again to the same point before finding it ~ 2 mins. Then reasonably clean. Little wobbles at 14 and 17. A bit diasappointed to be so far down (Rach 65') but on reflection was just running a bit conservatively - probably a good plan for my first race in a long time.
