Orienteering 25:13 [4]

Planner for the sprint O at Braemar. As we weren't exactly rushed off our feet I decided to have a run round myself. Legs felt very sore especially climbing up the hill to no 3. Just managed to beat Sasha - phew ;-}

Hill Race race 3:14:00 [5]

Slioch Hill Race. Hot sunny day and humid too - not best conditions for a long race. Never felt comfortable. Even on the way out along the loch I was looking for excuses to wimp out, but I couldn't come up with any decent ones, so had to carry on. The climb was grim and brought back memories of a scary winter ascent a few years ago, when we took the same direct route. By the top my legs were too shafted to take advantage of the nice running on the ridge. Descent was also grim - too steep to attack with tired legs. Actually almost enjoyed the first 10 minutes or so back along the lochside, until I realised there was another 20 to go. Reasonably happy with my time although I never felt I was racing.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Tried to do a warm up, but it was so hot and humid it was making me feel worse.

Note

Rest Day
Meeting in Stirling and resting up for Slioch tomorrow

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Jogged over to the far side of Dess woods to do some sprints, then jogged back again. Still feeling tired. Hope I perk up by Saturday.

Running intervals 10:00 [5]

10 x 30" + 30" sprints. Felt like hard work.

Pilates 30:00 [1]

Still no classes, so trying to do a bit more practice at home.

Stretching 5:00 [1]

Didn't do usual session, but a bit of work for my back which has been niggling a bit today.

Wednesday May 27, 2009 #

Running 42:00 [3]

Lunchtime round Hazlehead. Steady with a few fast bursts. Legs feel a lot better but still feeling generally tired.
Hand is much less swollen today - could even stir the porridge this morning.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 32:00 [3]

Steady run round Hazlehead. Legs are still very tired.

Monday May 25, 2009 #

Note

Rest Day
Gentle walk at Dinnet with 3 generations of Musgraves - just about right for today.
Hand swole up overnight and is hurting when I try and do anything with it. Think I might have cracked a bone.

Orienteering race 49:00 [5]

Scottish relays at Strathmashie. Ran a handicap team with Jon and Roger. Jon came back first on first leg so the pressure was on. Felt really tired and never relaxed with either the navigation or running, but managed a moderately clean run. Tough forest. Team won the 9 pt handicap ;-}

Note

Hurt my right hand out in the forest - felt something going crunch.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Not enough of a warm-up

Saturday May 23, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:29:00 [5]

Scottish Champs at Dunachton and Balavil. Ran W21E. Made some bad mistakes early on (1, 2 and 5) but was going pretty well on the rest of it when I managed to concentrate. Not really surprised it didn't work today - 1 O training session in 6 weeks isn't good prep.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Decent warm-up but didn't manage a warm-down.

Orienteering 35:00 [3]

Tech training at Sluie planned by Jon. Just what I needed before the weekend.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running race 21:05 [5]

Macbeth relays at Dess. Great fun. Ran with Neville, Rach and Jon and had promised Rach I'd drink a beer before my run if I was getting too serious. Thankfully she didn't make me do it. It's a tough little loop and I felt pretty dreadful by 2/3 of the way up the climb. I think a decent time for me would have been sub 20' - something to aim for next year. Lovely night and really nice atmosphere. Hope its run again next year.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Decent warm up before the start and a jog round the pond again at the end.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Tuesday May 19, 2009 #

Running 32:00 [3]

Steady lunchtime run at Hazlehead.

Monday May 18, 2009 #

Pilates 30:00 [1]

Still no class, but some more practice at home.

MTBO race 1:15:00 [4]

MTBO at Scolty. Brilliant fun even though my skills were distinctly lacking in the MTB and route planning departments. Shame that we were running late and I didn't have time to do the whole course and get Ewan to his party. Was working hard on the bike - to get back in time more than anything else!

Running hills 24:00 [5]

Torrential rain all morning, but felt up for a run both mentally and physically. By the time I got out it had eased off and was really quite pleasant running conditions. Did the 2 minute hill above the activity park - 6 x 2' + 2'. Haven't done this for ages (>1 year?). Felt surprisingly good. Distance was OK , if not brilliant, compared with my old benchmark.

Running warm up/down 23:00 [2]

To the start of intervals and back again. Think the rain must have cleared the pollen as I'm feeling much bouncier again.

Running 1:16:00 [3]

From Dinnet with Jon. Along the river bank to Cambus, round the road to Dinnet Muir, then back round Loch Kinord. Felt kind of spaced out and never got comfortable the whole time. Weather started out OK, but deteriorated and wasn't running fast enough to stay warm. Not great ;-{

Running 42:00 [3]

A really relaxed lap of Hazlehead at lunchtime. First work day I've had a chance to get out since I got back from France. Legs were feeling fine, but still a bit choked up and wheezy. Feeling much better for having been out now and my weekend starts in a couple of hours ;-}}

Pilates 20:00 [1]

Still no pilates classes, but did a bit of practice at home. Much harder when there's nobody to talk you through it.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Wednesday May 13, 2009 #

Running 30:00 [3]

Jogged round before the Dess TT putting out the controls at the top and bottom, fetching kit etc. Then jogged 1 loop at the end. Might have run one hard if I'd felt better, but feeling generally tired from work, too little sleep, organising training etc.

Tuesday May 12, 2009 #

Running 41:00 [2]

Jog round the Dess terrain time trial loop, re-taping sections that we'd taken in or had gone missing. Mostly still there though, which saved a good deal of tedious effort. Still took 30 minutes. Then ran a loop of the TT hard and had a warm-down jog to finish.

Hill Race 8:39 [5]

1 lap of the TT. Feeling very wheezy.
Hadn't realised how tough it was ;-}}

Running 20:00 [3]

Chasing after Ewan on his bike! Did the new stretch of the Deeside Way from Potties W to the Torphins junction. Ewan is still insisting on being "held", which involves 1 finger on his back but also means you've got to keep up with him. Session consisted of a series of short fast intervals (aimed at trying to leave mummy behind) which ended whenever Ewan decided to ram his brakes on (every 30 seconds or so).

Running 1:27:00 [3]

Ran from Bellwood after junior training, across the golf course and up into Coull. Along the power line ride and then through terrain until reaching some tracks. Got to the foot of the steep Mortlich climb and gave myself a bit of a talking to as I'd started plodding too much. Managed to run the 6 minutes to the top OK after that. Returned home via Little Hill and the railway.
Not feeling 100% - heady from hay fever / cold. Had hoped to do a longer run but only if I was feeling good.

Mountain biking 50:00 [3]

Cycled with Jon and Ewan on the tag-along, from the gliding strip along to Cambus o' May and back. Jon and Ewan were motoring (Ewan didn't want me to go past them) so it was a decent workout. Ewan's little legs were going like the clappers for most of the time until he got tired near the end. Just as well we were moving as it felt pretty chilly.
Went swimming afterwards, but I never managed to get warm so didn't stay in too long before retreating to a hot shower.

Running hills 30:00 [5]

Hill reps on the Fungle with Jon. 15 x 1' + 1'. From the bottom up to the mast. Felt like I was going quite well, although Jon seemed to be going even better compared to normal distances. Felt like my lungs were working hard, which may be because my legs were less tired than sometimes.

Running 1:05:00 [3]

From outside the creche to the Fungle. After the end of the hills dropped back down across the stream at the Guard than cut across the Birsemore map to the kennels track, down it, then back across to the bottom of the cistern track. Both pretty tired by this stage so returned by the road.

Note

Hadn't planned a rest day. Had a visitor at work at lunchtime, so planned to go for a run at 4:30 until a summons from the boss spoilt my plan. Should have been doing pilates this evening but class was cancelled and I've eaten too much tea to do anything else now. Hey-ho, the gods obviously want me to have a rest.

Running 45:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jon from home. Straight down to the river, along to the new mansion, then back by the road. Feeling pretty pooped so good to have some company.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]

Really horrible evening. Wished I'd done my training at lunchtime, but forced myself along to Glen Tanar. Realised rapidly that I was still very tired from Sunday's run, but had a go at intervals all the same. Managed 7 x 2' + 1', keeping not far in front of Evelyn.

Running warm up/down 28:00 [2]

To the start of intervals and back from the two bridges.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Note

Rest Day
Tired from yesterday. Had thought an easy jog could be useful, but never got round to it. Active day none the less including gardening, chasing after Ewan on the bike and an evening walk.

Running 2:18:00 [3]

Ran from the O event at Corsedarder over the hills to Aboyne. Up through the Finzean woods onto Craiglash, Lamahip, Brackenstake and finally Carnferg, then down to Aboyne by the Fungle. Feeling pretty good and seemed to get stronger as the run went on (benefit of an easy week I guess). Pushed hard up to the top of Carnferg. Didn't see a sole from early in the Finzean woods, until I reached Aboyne. Great run.

Running 42:00 [3]

Hilly run round Dess woods. Didn't want to do too much today - pretty tired from the last two weeks, mentally in particular. Legs felt good on the hills though.
Also did a fair bit of digging in the garden until my back started niggling.
