Running (Hill run) 1:33:00 [4]

Taking a few days off work, so a chance to get another good run in. Enjoyed the Strathdon / Mona Gowan run from a couple of weeks ago so much that I went back to do the same again. Heading into the wind on the way up the hill and still a bit of snow on the track in places, so pleased to get to the top a minute or so quicker than last time. Cracking day - Lochnagar looked special.

Note

Several hours in the garden in the afternoon. Knackered now.

Running 44:00 [3]

From home. Cow shit loop, returning by Bullevard. Felt tired when I set off, but reasonably strong once I got going.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Thought this was going to be difficult - upper body tired from gardening and shoulders really tight - but it wasn't too bad at all.

Stretching 15:00 [3]

Note

Had planned to go for a short run, but somehow never quite escaped from the garden etc. Plenty of upper body work.

Running 2:00:00 [3]

Was planning a long hilly run, but with snow falling at home decided it wouldn't be bright to head too high. Parked at the main car park in Glen Tanar. Headed up the Osprey track (no sign of them yet, just as well or they'd be heading straight back to Africa), over the back and down to the Firmounth Rd, up to the top of Tues intervals, R along the ridge to the Strone, down to the bridge, across 2 bridges, R back down the valley, L up the hill rep track and then back via the old mill pond. A few inches of snow was lying at quite low levels and my legs were numbed above my knees climbing up through the heather to the Strone and off the far side. Felt pretty dreadful throughout the run, but wanted to get a long one out the way.

Running 37:00 [2]

Managed to crawl out of bed early enough for another run along the quayside this morning. Headed W this time, out to Elswick etc. Felt dreadful. Tried to get out of granny gear in the last 10 minutes or so, but wasn't too successful.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Felt really brittle and awkward when I got back from the run, so did a short stretching session straight away. Felt much more comfortable after it.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Did some more stretching before bed - with the rope this time.

Running 30:00 [3]

Slipped in a short run before heading out for dinner. Out along the river towards the coast from the quayside (Geordieland) and back the same way. Nice day, but strong wind which felt like hard work on the way back. Amazing how they've managed to redevelop all the quayside area in the last 10 years. Very smart now.

Running 1:02:00 [3]

Not sure how much training I'll get in over the next couple of days, so wanted to do a decent session this afternoon. Ran down through the woods, onto the railway and out towards Mortlich. Decided I didn't fancy the long slog across to Mortlich or the steep climb, so changed my mind and did some long steady hill efforts up Little Hill instead. Great hill for reps - sustained climbing on a lovely smooth grass track. Back home the same way.
Off to Ingerlund now ;-{

Running hills 13:00 [4]

3 x reps from the track junction to the top of Little Hill. Something over 4 mins for each, then a jog back for recovery. Didn't set out to do it at full effort, but the 2nd and 3rd reps felt better than the 1st.

Tuesday Mar 24, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Parked in the middle of Aboyne and jogged out on the railway track to do intervals with Jon at lunchtime. Same on the return.

Running intervals 24:00 [5]

12 x 1' + 1'. Just about managed to make myself work hard - helped by having company. Anything longer wouldn't have been full effort. Reasonably happy with recovery from the weekend.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Felt surprisingly good

Note

Took Ewan swimming. Didn't involve a huge amount of exercise, but I think it must have helped loosen me up before pilates. Trying to be a good mum today - hard work!

Orienteering race 53:00 [5]

Street O in Forres. Another really good event with more route choice and interest than I expected. Think I took the wrong route (going R instead of L) on 17 and then missed the best line on 18, as I didn't see a narrow cut-through which sent me on a longer route round. Didn't feel as wrecked as I thought I would, but couldn't run fast enough to do well.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Warm-up before the race. No warm down again ;-{
Need to stretch tonight.

Orienteering race 1:43:00 [5]

Black (W21E) at Culbin. Really enjoyed this. Orienteered pretty well - a dodgy route choice on one of the long legs cost me a few minutes, then lost it a bit for a couple of legs after trying to chase after Dave R who was running way too fast for me. Felt I was running quite well in the first half, but really started to struggle physically in the second half. A few jelly babies helped, but not enough.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Warm-up to start. Too knackered for a warm-down.

Friday Mar 20, 2009 #

Running 55:00 [3]

Steady run with Jon from Dinnet. Clockwise round Loch Kinord and then back via Loch Davan. Absolutely gorgeous spring morning. Never seen so many toads 'at it' as there were in the curling pond.

Note

Did a fair bit of gardening this afternoon. May regret it tomorrow, but it was too nice a day to miss.

Running 25:00 [2]

Not sure if I'll get along to O training tonight, so went for a short lunchtime jog. Out the back of Macaulay to the Den Burn, down to Johnston Gardens, a loop round the bottom, then back up the burn again. Didn't feel too bad considering my sandwiches had done a vanishing trick into my stomach some time late morning. Now for some lunch....

Orienteering 38:00 [3]

Got along to Maroc training after all. Clare had planned a blank map compass exercise with some quite long legs on it. I've planned many of these myself before, but not often actually run them. I found the longer legs remarkably tricky as I seemed to lose my distance judgement without anything on the map to guide me. Suggests I subconciously use the map to adjust my distance judgement when I'm running a normal course. Ran out of light before I got all the way round.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Ran with Deeside Runners in Aboyne - good turnout. Not feeling fully recovered from Sun and the warm-up pace felt way too fast for me, but I was OK once I got going. Jogged back on my own after cutting the interval session short.

Running intervals 30:00 [5]

The planned session was 20 x 1' + 1'. Decided this would be too much for tonight so set out to do the first 10 x 1' hard. Then jogged through the next one, then did another 5 x 1'. Proud of myself at being able to do my own thing and cut the session short! Felt like a good work out without completely destroying myself.

Running 20:00 [1]

Really easy jog round the woods to try and loosen up a bit.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session.

Running long 1:35:00 [4]

Long hill run on one of Ben's routes that I haven't run for a few years. Parked on the minor road S of the Don near Culfork and headed S into the hills to the W of Morven. Started off on the wee road up Glen Conrie and then onto a big landrover track that takes you almost all of the way to the top of Scraulac. E along the ridge to Mona Gowan and then back down the big track to the N. Felt great on the hill - settled into a nice steady rhythm and reached the first top in just over 45 minutes. The running was great even off the tracks, with short-cropped heather and springy reindeer moss. A couple more climbs along the ridge, including a steep section up to Mona Gowan. Saw a mountain hare - looking very white against the heather - but not much else. The descent track is now up to motorway standard as they've taken out a wee plantation high up on the hill. All in all a great run. Expected it to take a bit longer.

Note

Still feeling heavy headed and runny nosed, but decided it's an allergy rather than a lurgy. I think today's run confirmed that.

Note

Rest Day
Jon away for the day. Had planned to take Ewan cycling on the tag-along, but the wind was ferocious and I didn't think it would be much fun. Anyway, feeling a bit bleah - cold not fully developed, but eyes and head heavy.

Friday Mar 13, 2009 #

Running 53:00 [3]

Parked at Tower of Ess and headed up towards the Guard doing hill reps from the start of the steep bit. Turned R at the big pine at the top and along into Glen Tanar. Down by the diagonal track through the forest and back along the track on the E side of the Tanar. Glorious springlike morning. Great view to Lochnagar and the Fairy Loch looked particularly sparkly. Struggling on the return along the bottom, so must have worked quite well on the hills.

Running hills 30:00 [5]

7 x 2' + 1 x 1' hills with 2' recovery. Feeling much better today. 6 reps took us to the top and the last 3' were extra up the next hill, after dropping down to cross the Allt Roy. 2' recovery was good.

Note

Spent all afternoon gardening. Great day.....but I think I might be going down with a cold.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Over-stuffed myself at tea and stretching didn't seem like a good idea at all, but guilted myself into doing a shortened session.

Rest Day
Great day at work - everything working. Enjoying a rest.

Running warm up/down 21:00 [2]

Jogged out to Hazlehead to do some intervals. Feeling heavy legged and generally tired but hoped that it would improve once I got going. It didn't, so I decided to cut the interval session short. I obviously haven't recovered from the weekend, so will try having a rest day tomorrow and hopefully feel a bit bouncier by Friday.

Running intervals 15:00 [4]

5 x 2' + 1' on roads

Running 15:00 [2]

Running around getting the time-trial going etc. Seemed to work well.

Tuesday Mar 10, 2009 #

Running 25:00 [2]

Easy run to loosen off. Different route from usual round the roads and tracks through Hazlehead Park etc.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 30:00 [2]

Setting up a terrain time-trial in Dess for Wed training. Took 1 1/2 hours or so by the time I'd changed bits of it, found enough tape etc., but not running for much of that time. Feeling very tired from yesterday but not damaged otherwise.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Mostly OK, but hamstring cramped on the shoulder bridge leg lift. Got away without Emma spotting I was knackered.

Sunday Mar 8, 2009 #

Running long 2:50:00 [3]

Long hill run with Dave H and Dave S. Parked on the S side of the bridge at Dinnet. Headed up towards Glen Tanar over the top of Creag nan Slice, down to the river, R to the bridge, then up towards Clachan Yell. Got onto the shoulder below the top and could barely stand up in the bitter wind so decided to drop round off the side and back down to the river at Half Way Hut. Then picked up a track to the N and went over the top of Tom Lair before dropping back to the start point. Never felt great and was getting seriously dropped on the hills (but then I would have expected to anyway). First run like this for a while and a good start to my campaign to get hill fit.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Note

Slept dreadfully - over-tired.

Mountain biking 1:10:00 [3]

Cycling with Jon and Ewan in Fetteresso. Started off towing Ewan on the tag along, but we were struggling on the hills so swapped bikes with Jon. Still felt like hard work, but then it's a few months since I've been on a bike. Forest distinctly uninspiring for anything except mountain biking. Ewan did well considering he'd been running about at a party all morning. Dreich and windy day.

Running (tracks) 1:00:00 [3]

Parked at the bottom of the Cistern track. Ran out to the end of the big Birse track, did intervals up to the top of the forest, then continued on to the top of Carnferg. Psyched myself out on the last stretch of the hill up Carnferg when I thought the top was close, only to find I still had a few minutes to go. Dropped down to the track above the Fungle and ran down onto the Birsemore map then cut across to the top of the Cistern track. Not feeling great, but a good session and another lovely day. Just a touch of snow higher up.

Running hills 20:00 [4]

10x1'+1' up the big Birse track. Felt sluggish.

Running (tracks / paths) 44:00 [3]

Drove out to Kingshill at lunchtime for a change. Had a very pleasant run up onto the top and round a lot of the smaller paths. Nice running conditions again.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Wednesday Mar 4, 2009 #

Running intervals 28:00 [4]

Intervals on tracks round Hazlehead. 7x3'+1'. Not feeling fully recovered from the weekend yet and not getting great distance, but good to be out doing them. Nice day - cool but bright.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Out to the woods to the start of intervals and back through the park.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 54:00 [3]

Lunchtime run from home. Out through the woods to the fields then cow shit alley. Feeling not too bad, so turned left off the military road up through the fields to the edge of the forest. Suddenly felt rather hungry, so turned for home via bullyvard, the fields and the top of the woods.
Ankle felt fine, but I'll ice it anyway.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session. Still struggling with the balances on my left side though.

Sunday Mar 1, 2009 #

Orienteering race 35:00 [5]

BOC relays in the New Forest. Running W Premier with Kirsty (1st leg) and Hazel (3rd leg). Feeling very tired and stiff before the start. Kirsty came back in a good time, so set out to try and hold our position. Messed up no 1 - confused by the mapping of the rodhies and not picking up enough detail. After that ran pretty clean and caught / passed a couple of people towards the end with a good route choice (although I thought initially that they'd caught me up). Surprised to find that we were in 3rd by the end of the leg. Hazel ran well too, to give us Maroc's best ever BOC result of 4th in the W Premier ;-}
Ankle was a bit sore but held up OK.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Again didn't feel like enough warm-up.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Didn't feel too bad
