Road cycling 55:00 [3]

Loop from Dinnet north, over to Tarland then Logie Coldstone and back via Redburn. Very pleasant. Stopped by Loch Davan to chill for 10' on the way back.

Running 2:55:00 [3]

Glen Cat Skyline. Started on the south side up onto Arntilly Crag and along to Craiglash. Fair depth of snow (30cm+) out in the open even at this height (350m). Continued to Corybeg and Lamahip. 1 hour in then and the snow started. Couldn't see much but found my way onto the track across towards Brackenstake. By the time I left the track to start the climb there was full blown blizzard conditions and I stopped to put on my final waterproof layer. Compass got me to the top and off the other side, although I wouldn't have known if I had been in completely the wrong place. Still blizzarding by the time I reached the foot of Carnferg, so I decided to be sensible and by-pass the summit by taking the track round the side. Conditions eased for a bit and I continued along the wall line to go over the top of Creagandummie and Creagantoll before dropping to the track and eventually the Glen Cat road. Snow / hail again by this stage, but feet eventually warmed up going back along the road. Still feeling pretty good physically by the end, but not a day to be out for any longer. Glad of my 4 upper layers, but could have done with waterproof socks and over-trousers. 29th April ???

Running 25:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club in castle woods. Stayed dry :-)

8 AM

Running 15:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting markers at Alford
6 PM

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Feeling stiff, but a bit better after a decent jog down the hill and back again.

Orienteering race 21:00 [5]

Dunottar woods forest sprint. Quite enjoyed this. Very wary of the steep banks as I've skited down them too often before. Expected no 1 in the niche before the spur and then lost 10+s trying to get down the bank in one piece. Took the wrong route (diverting via steps) to 7 when I should have run straight. Then at 8 I public-spiritedly sacrificed 20s to move the control to the correct location at RHs request. So, I was a bit worried that I might be going down today, but in the end lived to fight another day thanks to a 2nd last control error by E :-)

12 PM

Running intervals 30:00 [5]

5x4'+2' on the railway. Going ok. Managed to time it between the worst of the squalls, just a bit of hail on the way back. Darn cold.

Running warm up/down 24:00 [2]

To start of intervals and back
7 PM

Running 54:00 [3]

Steady at GT with JS. Round the 2 bridges and then back by the mill pond high track. Sleety squalls came on half way round and pretty chilly by the end despite long tights, thermal, windproof, hat and gloves. Legs not feeling too bad.
10 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Monday Apr 25, 2016 #

Note

Planned a cycle for the morning, but it wasn't cycling weather. Then didn't feel inspired to do anything else. Body probably telling me something.
8 AM

Running 15:00 [2]

Hanging controls at Ab Ac. Snowing. Wtf.

Sunday Apr 24, 2016 #

Orienteering race 1:12:00 [5]

Crathes brown course. Enjoyed this more than anticipated. Got a bit repetitive by the 3rd time round, but a good workout. Clean apart from 1 easy leg where I switched off because I thought I knew where it was...
Nice to see a good turnout from the new juniors.

Saturday Apr 23, 2016 #

Note
(rest day)

Kind of...

Friday Apr 22, 2016 #

Running race 1:26:00 [4]

Craig a Barns Dark Thistle. Managed not to make a complete pigs ear of the mass start, but made too many mistakes out there to feel happy with the performance. Stomach felt crap throughout. Would probably have got more from it on a different day when I had less on my mind. Great concept for the race though.

Thursday Apr 21, 2016 #

12 PM

Running 1:00:00 [3]

From Corsedarder with JR. Out to caper enclosure, cut across to plantation on Finzean side, then a loop through the woods. Legs feeling pretty heavy the whole time, but no worse by the end. Really enjoyed it.

Road cycling 33:00 [2]

Than a cycle home - downhill most of the way :-)
5 PM

Running 30:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at Lady Wood for after-school club. Gorgeous afternoon and 14 bouncy happy kids.
6 sessions in 8 days done. Tick.

Wednesday Apr 20, 2016 #

Running 20:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at Alford Academy. Not very much bounce there, especially at 8am!

Note

Bit too late from meeting for the forest sprint, but maybe no bad thing...

Tuesday Apr 19, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 42:00 [2]

To start of hills, then return from back of Baudy Meg.

Running hills 30:00 [5]

With DR at GT. 6x2'+1' out the reverse of the standard long loop, then 8x1'+1' heading left before the dam and up round the back of Baudy Meg. Tough session. Started it tired and was well pooped by the end. Pleased with myself for getting out and doing it though.
Gorgeous evening once I found enough energy to look :-)

Monday Apr 18, 2016 #

Running 1:55:00 [3]

Up the Fungle, high track to Glen T from the Guard, behind Baudy Meg then back by Tues night track, south side of the glen and road to Aboyne. Never felt very bright and a bit of discomfort from a bruised rib (from Sat fall). Had planned to go a bit higher, but the wind was cold and my body didn't feel up for it.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Sunday Apr 17, 2016 #

Mountain biking 1:00:00 [2]

In need of an easy head clearer, so down to Potties on the DW, off-road loop through Potarch Wood then back by Marywell road and DW. Lovely afternoon and just what I needed.
Good session at Balnagowan this morning, apart from losing my special guest at the start....hadn't thought about the physical challenge of getting through the rough stuff up to the start.
Tired from mental effort of the week, but feel like I'm gradually ticking off a lot of things and making progress. Next generation of Maroc is in the making.

Saturday Apr 16, 2016 #

Roller skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Adult intro session to roller skiing at Huntly. Great fun. Been wanting to have a go at this for ages. Once we got going it felt quite relaxed with the same movements as on snow. Only fell over once, but unfortunately landed on my teeth and broke one. Oops :-(

Friday Apr 15, 2016 #

9 AM

Running 30:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at Cambus and a wee bit of shadowing. Snow flurries on and off all morning.
Good camp, but hard work. Big thanks to back-up team of J and E without whom it would have been an awful lot harder....
3 PM

Orienteering 50:00 [2]

Hanging controls at Balnagowan for Sunday training. Expected this to be a chore but actually really enjoyed it - maybe as I was hanging some more technical stuff for the first time in a while :-)

Thursday Apr 14, 2016 #

Running 30:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at H+M, Alford. Feeling tired.

Wednesday Apr 13, 2016 #

12 PM

Running 20:00 [2]

Control collecting at Dess. Feeling sluggish.
7 PM

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Bit of an extended (and much needed) w-u at Countesswells to go back to find more maps for the start.

Orienteering race 21:00 [5]

Countesswells forest sprint. Had to get myself a bit up for this with E out to get me. All good apart from my bearing from 4-5 which lost me 1' cf E - also pulled RO and J off line :)
Got away with it tonight, but it's not going to get any easier....

Tuesday Apr 12, 2016 #

Walking 1:30:00 [2]

From the hut back up the path to the col then onto the Beinn Mheadhoin climb. Mostly snow free on the lower sections, but plenty of snow higher up. Cloud was down on the plateau and navigation became somewhat key. Got really quite nauseous, and a little scary at times too, walking along unable to see anything except white. Followed a bearing and found some faint ski tracks for much of it, but quite relieved to find the tor at the top. Tried to climb it, but snow / ice made it somewhat iffy, so decided to play safe. Return was much more relaxing as we had our own footsteps to follow through the snow. Stopped off at the hut to pick up kit and have some food, then a long trek back to Derry Lodge. Out for 3:40 moving time total.
Another good hill day.

Mountain biking 25:00 [2]

Back from Derry Lodge to Linn of Dee
7 PM

Running 25:00 [2]

No rest for the wicked... Controls to hang in Dess for holiday camp tomorrow. Not too bad when split 3 ways and good to get them out tonight.

Monday Apr 11, 2016 #

Mountain biking 25:00 [2]

From Linn of Dee into Derry Lodge

Walking 1:30:00 [2]

With J and E from Derry Lodge up onto Derry Cairngorm then over the back down to Loch Etchachan and Hutchison memorial hut - home for the night. Not a bad day, clear on the tops, but looking threatening in places. Not much snow on the climb, but pretty much full cover once into the main massif. Good climb, good pace, feeling pretty good all round. Out for 3:00 moving time total.
Hut to ourselves, fine with the fire going, but got pretty chilly overnight.

Sunday Apr 10, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Jog to start +

Orienteering race 1:30:00 [5]

Culteuchar SOL brown course. Mostly very pleasant and easy running apart from the (badly mapped) gorsey bits and plantation. Nothing very technical and only real time-loss was getting stuck in aforementioned gorse (twice). Felt like I was running pretty well for most of it, but obviously a lot slower than the M18s :-) Good MM training and good end to a tough week.

Saturday Apr 9, 2016 #

Note
(rest day)

Feeling a bit washed out. Poor nights sleep seeing too many control circles - busy couple of weeks coming-up.

Friday Apr 8, 2016 #

Running 55:00 [2]

From Aboyne up the TW to Balnagowan. Then faffing in the forest checking it over for training. Feeling tired - very.

Running 1:08:00 [3]

Continued on out the NW end of Balnagowan, up onto Craig Dhu, then down to Braeroddach and the DW by the gliding strip back to Aboyne. Bit of a plod but quite a pleasant one.
Rest day tomorrow.

Thursday Apr 7, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

20' before and 10' after Cambus Canters. Lungs felt a bit strange on w-u, but seemed to settle ok.

Running race 19:10 [5]

Cambus Canters. Set off 5" behind SH and knowing that she's running really well just tried to use her to pace me up the hill. She'd gained another 5-10" by the top, but then disappeared on the way down. Felt tough in the 3rd quarter, but gradually catching quite a few and only passed by 3. Managed to hold off BS by finding a little bit extra in the last 1km.
Really chuffed with time (fastest since ~2007) considering lack of recent speedwork and a couple of tough sessions earlier in the week.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Wednesday Apr 6, 2016 #

Mountain biking 1:15:00 [2]

Leisurely recovery ride with E along the DW from gliding strip to Riverside Cafe (scone and chocolate) and back the same way.

Tuesday Apr 5, 2016 #

12 PM

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Down to railway and back after intervals

Running intervals 30:00 [5]

10 x 2'+1' on the railway. This went much better than I anticipated. Legs felt pretty good and distances were ok - solid 500m throughout. Nice to get this out of the way at lunchtime.
7 PM

Running 53:00 [3]

Steady round long loop at Glen T with SP and E on bike up to the high point at a faster pace than I would have run on my own, which was good. Then re-grouped with intervallers. Swapped onto E's bike for 3km on the way back - he enjoyed the run and I enjoyed the rest :-)

Mountain biking 15:00 [2]

10 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Feel the stretching is helping with recovery

Monday Apr 4, 2016 #

Running 1:05:00 [3] 9.5 km (6:51 / km) +325m 5:51 / km

Hilly loop round Dess with J, including 4 x climbs using various different paths. Took a while to w-u, but ok once I got going.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Sunday Apr 3, 2016 #

Running 40:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at Bellwood for training. Seemed to go well. Enjoyed it.

Saturday Apr 2, 2016 #

Road cycling 1:15:00 [3] 28.0 km (2:41 / km) +390m 2:30 / km

A93 to Boddomend, over to Lumph bowl, round the high road, on up to Tar Rd, then back by Bogentassie and Lumphanan. Lovely afternoon and really enjoyed it. Worked the climbs quite hard, then couldn't resist chasing down a couple of YMIL on the Tarland Rd.

Friday Apr 1, 2016 #

Running 2:00:00 [3] 18.4 km (6:31 / km) +440m 5:50 / km

Long run with J round Shooting Greens and Scolty. Out along the river bank, then up over Scolty and back by the south side of Gouach. Felt not too bad for the first 30' or so. After that it was mind over matter most of the way. Legs still seemed very heavy on any kind of ascent and the Scolty climb felt really tough. Pretty wild up there too - glad of hat, gloves and windproof, but even so lost my fingers for a while.
Good kick-start to MM training - mentally at least!
