Running 25:00 [3]

H'head on a totally minging day. Amused my colleagues at least.

Running intervals 10:00 [5]

10 x 30" + 30". Got to start somewhere. Must be first intervals in over 2 months. Going to take a while to get some speed back, but twice weekly intervals start from now...

Running 35:00 [3]

Orienteering 35:00 [3]

O training at Cambus. Short of time but wanted to try and get my brain in gear for the VHIs. Legs felt good, but wasn't focussing well - probably thinking about b'day party too much.

Running 31:00 [3]

Cold feeling much better today, so went for a wee run through the woods and fields. Didn't do any harm.

Mountain biking 50:00 [1]

Glen Tanar 2 bridges loop with E - no problem.

Mountain biking 40:00 [1]

Easy cycle from Aboyne to gliding strip and back to test out E's new bike. He can certainly move faster now, so we might mange to get these up to intensity 2 sometime soon.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Was feeling a bit dopey but managed not to fall asleep in class - just.

Orienteering 48:00 [3]

Got a run on the area in Dundas Valley to be used for an event at the beginning of October. Stakes and tapes were already out in the forest, so able to do some proper O. Continental spur / gully with a bit of limestone on the Niagara escarpment. Mostly nice but a but grot in places and some steep slippy slopes.
Feeling rubbish - too early - but fun otherwise.
Seminar at the Uni and now the long trip home :-(

Note
(rest day)

To Hamilton - time to talk science again

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Finally enough space and time for a good stretching session
1 PM

Running 45:00 [2]

Picked up a car and drove a long way up the route 10 to the Bruce Peninsula. Went for a run from Cyprus Lake. Limestone, forest and rocky lakeside. Scenic but spoilt big time by all the people - very different to Quebec. 45' covered all the main trails :-(
3 PM

Running 50:00 [3]

Drove down the road to Lion's Head and picked up a section of the Bruce trail. Lots of limestone pavement and rooty paths through some forest, across some scrubby meadows then onto the cliff top path round White buff. Great trail made even better by only seeing 2 other people (ok I'm selfish and anti-social).
Cracking day again - been really lucky with the weather.

Kayaking 1:00:00 [1]

Didn't have time to go sea kayaking and whale watching but did manage an hour of kayaking in the Parc des Hautes Gorges de la Riviere Malbaie. Very enjoyable although the wind had me a bit worried. Another hour would have been even better.

Note

Travelled to Toronto late evening.

Running 3:15:00 [3]

Parc de Monts Valin. From the park entrance up the Pic de la Tete de Chien, Pic du Grand Corbeau and finally the Pic de la Hutte at the summit. Height difference of ~700m but must have been more like 1000m with all the ups and downs as well as all my diversions to the viewpoints on the way up. A big rocky forest covered mountain - impressive if not quite as special as yesterday. Lost a lot of nervous energy watching and listening for bear - plenty of berry filled poo on the tracks, but none came out to play. Shame. Was pretty knackered by the time I reached the top (not helped by a ~2km diversion when I got confused by the signing). Descent took 75' without any diversions.
Think I might need a bit of an easier day tomorrow.

Running 1:40:00 [3]

Drove to the Parc des Grands Jardins and headed out on a circular trail onto the Mont du Lac des Cygnes. Was a bit worried it might turn out to be rather a long run but thankfully the km estimates were rather generous. great autumn colours all the way up and the summit plateau was covered with the most beautiful mix of lichen, blaeberry and other small shrubs which were a blaze of colour - amazing. Didn't feel great on the climb but got up much quicker than expected. Only 28' easy run back down off the second top by the "tourist" route.
Brill :-))

Running 50:00 [3]

Skived off the closing session to go for a run. Went across the road and picked up the "Chemin des Chutes" which took me to the top of the Chute Jean Larose in about 5 mins, then down a long long set of stairs via various view points to the bottom - cool! Path carried on down to the main river and then back up to join my outward route on Sunday.Got up the hill steadily if slowly. Quads are still sore, but improving.
Was in the hot tub by the time everyone piled out of the last session - oops ;-] Weather much brighter and looking promising for the next few days of my "pay back time"

Running 32:00 [2]

Ouch! Quads are well and truly shot today from yesterday's direct descent. Went on a short easy run along the valley to try and loosen them up a bit, followed by an extra long soak in the hot tub.
Weather brightening up - can see the mountain again. Saw a raccoon in a tree on the way back.

Running 1:07:00 [3]

Really wet day, but by 4pm had dried up a bit, so decided to head out for a wee run. Followed a path steadily climbing up a green ski run. Felt good and it gradually dawned on me that I could just follow it all the way up to the top of the mountain - so I did. Daft on a day like this as I disappeared into cloud and rain after 15mins or so, but it felt like the thing to do. Got to the top (600m climb) in 44' then came back by the direct route below the gondola. This was too steep and slippy to run in my road shoes near the top, but nice further down.
Enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor thermal pool in the rain before making myself presentable to go out for dinner. Brilliant ;-}

Running 1:20:00 [2]

From the hotel at Mont St Anne found a path across the road that headed towards the St Anne river valley. Twisted and turned up and down some steep slopes through the forest. A great wee path but with disappointingly few breaks in the trees to give any views. After an hour or so (and not very many km) reached a point where the path turned left and ahead was a collapsed fence and "defense de passer" sign. Not sure what that could mean, so carried on past another couple of signs and scrambled through some fight before dropping down onto a track in the "Canyon St Anne" park. Wandered round over the suspension bridges etc. before heading back out by the back door and found a rather more direct (but less interesting) route back to the hotel.
Out for 2 hours in total. Right knee was niggling but calf absolutely fine.

SOL 5 - phew glad that's over. All went well on the day even without the third bus. Great help to have a reliable team that you can leave to get on with their jobs. Thanks guys!

Orienteering race 29:00 [4]

11-person relay at Crathes. Ran the last leg for Maroc. Started well and feeling bouncy, but made a few small mistakes / hesitations in the second half. Fun and the calf held up just fine.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Mat work. Enjoyed it.

Stretching 5:00 [1]

Slipped a bit on the calf stretches today - try harder tomorrow!

Note
(rest day)

Didn't get any exercise at all today, and it didn't do me any good. My metabolism seems to have shut down completley and I spent half the night trying to get warm. SOL 5 stress didn't help either.
