Running intervals 30:00 [5]

First intervals for a good few weeks. 15 x 1' + 1' on tracks at Hazlehead. Felt sluggish on the warm-up but fine once I got into the intervals. Good session - need a few more like it over the next few weeks. Sticky day with the sun starting to burn off the harr.

Running warm up/down 24:00 [2]

To and from Hazlehead.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Strained a muscle in my back out weeding in the garden. Tried to stretch it out, but still sore.

Running 15:00 [2]

Jog behind Ewan on his bike from Potties to the Kinker hill and back.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Mostly OK, but my brain couldn't cope with the windmills.

Orienteering race 1:19:00 [4]

Brown course at Ballogie. Start of my O training for the 6-days. Set off steady. Feeling pretty good and reasonably clean - just a few wobbles in the circle. Really enjoyed it despite the bracken and the boggy legs at the end.
W end of Ballogie is starting to look just like Finland with birch coming up everywhere - brilliant.
Fell on R hand (which has been healing v slowly) and it hurt a lot. Think I really should go and get it x-rayed.

Orienteering race 21:00 [3]

Ultra-sprint on Pottie green. Really whacky and great fun. Took a while to get into the technique. Hardest part was to see where the next control was with all the clutter on the map, so quickly learnt to focus on this whilst running to the control before. 2nd and 3rd laps were much better than first.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

To start of brown course. No warm-up before ultra sprint and no warm down.

Road cycling 1:50:00 [2]

Last day and a cracking one with clear blue skies all day. Took the bicycles on the boat over to Rousay and did an anti-clockwise lap of the island stopping at the various sights on the way. Found a perfect swimming spot at Midhowe broch where we had our ritual holiday swim in the sea. Brilliant day to end the holiday.

Running 1:10:00 [3]

Last clifftop run. Started at Yesnaby on the W coast and finished down near Stromness. Really exposed and windy at the start. A great bit of the coast and an enjoyable run, at least for the first 45 minutes or so. Then there was a really tedious section where the fields run right up to the edge of the coast. Diced with some electric fences to get better running and got badly nettled in the process.

Road cycling 1:50:00 [2]

Another cycling tour from the house with J + E. Down to Maeshowe, across to Ring of Brodgar and then back. A bit cold and windy on the bikes and hillier than expected.

Running 45:00 [3]

Another clifftop run. This time on the N coast finishing at Brough of Birsay. Again felt really sluggish at the start, but much better for some exercise.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Legs feeling not too bad.

Running 35:00 [3]

Ran along part of the coastline on S Ronaldsay after visiting the tomb of the eagles etc. Footpath all the way along the cliff tops. Only looked like about 5km on the map, but took a bit longer than that. Very pleasant. Glad I managed to make myself do something.

Road cycling 1:50:00 [2]

Cycled from the house with J + E on the tag-along. Out to Brough of Birsay first then down the coast to Skara Brae and back to the house. Out for most of the day.

Running 35:00 [3]

Travelled up to Orkney for the second week of the hols.
Managed a short run once we got there - out the back of the house and onto the hill behind. Great spot with good open views across the island.

Mountain biking 40:00 [2]

Cycled in towards Sandwood Bay with J + E as far as the track is good, then back out again after.

Note

Continued on foot to Sandwood Bay. Took a bit less than an hour each way and Ewan did really well. Proud mum ;-}

Mountain biking 30:00 [3]

Feeling much brighter today, so decided to make an assault on Arkle - it would be rude to be here for a week without climbing anything. Shortened the trip by cycling the first few km to the foot of the hill.

Running 2:00:00 [3]

Took it steady up the hill. Walked most of it, but jogged where the gradient eased. The top was clear but the wind was ferocious. Once I reached the ridge I could barely stand and didn't hang around. Thankfully the wind eased a bit further round where the ridge narrows and is quite exposed. Returned by dropping off the middle col down to grassy slopes that angled back towards where I'd left my bike. Path / animal tracks for must of the way and lovely running.
Felt just fine, so I guess I must have recovered.

Wednesday Jun 17, 2009 #

Note

Had hoped to be back training today, but woke up with a sore throat again ;-{
Felt brighter later on, so went for a short bike ride.
Weather not so good.

Mountain biking 40:00 [3]

Cycled from the house out towards Sandwood bay to reccie the track for a family expedition. Not bad going for the first few km.

Tuesday Jun 16, 2009 #

Note

Feeling brighter but still not 100% and still tired from Saturday's race.
Brilliant sunny day on Handa island.

Monday Jun 15, 2009 #

Note

Still full of cold.
Another easy day messing around on the beach and a couple of short walks.

Sunday Jun 14, 2009 #

Note

Realised on waking up that I wasn't just tired from the race, but also suffering from a cold. Can't have helped my race and explains why I'd been feeling so wheezy.
Pleasant first day of the holidays all the same - messing about on the beach and a short walk to the next bay.

Hill Race race 3:25:00 [5]

Loch Lochy hill race. Felt sluggish at start but got going better on the climb. Nice running on the hills but legs were too shafted to make good progress. Still going OK until 5 minutes or so into the long descent back towards the track out, when my quads cramped up big time. Had to stop first for the left one, then got going again for 5 minutes or so before the right one seized. Not fun and lost a lot of time down to the track. Got going again after that and at least caught back 2 places.
Not a good time, but enjoyed the race more than Slioch.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

To the start of the race.

Note

Travelled up to Kinlochbervie after the race for the first week of our holidays.

Thursday Jun 11, 2009 #

Running 30:00 [2]

Easy run at Hazlehead. Not feeling great - not helped by being a bit hay-fevery again.

Running warm up/down 37:00 [3]

Ran out on the Deeside Way from Bieldside to Peterculter and back. Never been on this bit of the railway. Very pleasant and good to do a flat fast run for a change. Started intervals after ~12 minutes warm-up.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]

10 x 1' + 1'. Felt fine but maybe wasn't pushing myself quite as hard as I could.

Monday Jun 8, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Jogged across to hill-reps hill above DAP and back again afterwards.

Running hills 20:00 [5]

Feeling brighter and up for some better quality training this morning. Did 5 x 2' + 2' hills on the usual Dess hill. Still felt a bit heavy legged and this seemed like a long enough session for today.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session - getting back into it again. Shame we're away for the next 2 weeks.

Sunday Jun 7, 2009 #

Mountain biking 1:30:00 [3]

Cycled with Jon and Ewan from Dinnet along the railway to the tea shop at Crannoch and back again. I was enjoying the ride so carried on all the way back home on the railway.

Note

Had half planned to do Scolty hill race, but have been feeling fairly wapped and didn't feel motivated for it.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday Jun 6, 2009 #

Running 23:00 [3]

Short lap of Dess Woods. Not much time, but might have gone further if I'd felt a bit bouncier.

Note

Ceilidh in the evening - not drinking, but lots of dancing.

Friday Jun 5, 2009 #

Running 1:14:00 [3]

With Jon from Aboyne CC out to Balnagowan via Duke's Farm, circuit of the forest on tracks and back. Felt dreadful at the start - hadn't had a good night and wasn't feeling very awake. Gradually improved through the run, particularly once the sun came out. Wet and cold by the end, but hot chocolate helped afterwards.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Thursday Jun 4, 2009 #

Running 42:00 [3]

Lunchtime circuit of Hazlehead.
Forgot to buy a sandwich from the canteen before I went out and there's none left now ;-{

Wednesday Jun 3, 2009 #

Road cycling 34:00 [3]

Brought my bike in to work for a change at lunchtime. Cycled out Countesswells Rd, Foggieton, Cults, Craigton Rd, Springfield Rd and in the back of Macaulay. Still quite tired so this was enough. A bit chilly, but working hard enough to keep warm. Hand was a bit sore on the brake and over bumps etc.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 1:10:00 [3]

Glen Tanar with DR. Didn't consider intervals although legs are feeling much better today. Jogged as far as the bridge at a relaxed pace with Christine, Phil and Ursula. Then continued on round the long loop with Dave and Gary at a rather less relaxed pace. Much cooler and better running conditions than the last few days.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

First class back with Emma. Went fine despite legs still being very sore.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Quads really tight.
