(rest day)

Had hoped to fit a half day of skiing in but I managed to save me from myself.... Still hadn’t made space for that R+R and feeling absolutely exhausted. Took time in the morning catching up with work and prepping for ASC and then had a gentle lunchtime stroll round Aboyne Loch. Rewarded by seeing an otter playing on the water :-) Feeling better for it already.
3 PM

Running 35:00 [2] 4.0 km (8:45 / km)
ahr:115 max:138

Hanging and collecting for Aboyne ASC and getting very very cold feet in between.

DNC Dinnet nightmare. Least said... plenty to work on but probably more in need of a rest than anything else. Hope to go back and re-do this in daylight.
Lovely crisp clear night.

Ski Touring 2:00:00 [2] 10.18 km (11:48 / km) +404m 9:50 / km

The Pan and Heartbreak ridge with J. Parked at forest track end and got a surprisingly good ski through the forest itself to the western edge. Then put skins on and climbed up onto Pannanich, following some other ski tracks all the way. Glorious blue sky day, stunning views, snow aplenty and a lovely climb. Other skier had sadly headed south from the top while we were turning north and it was a fairly slow plod along and down the ridge through deep soft snow. J was leading so I got a bit more sliding, but it was all a bit too slow even for me. Eventually took skis off descending through the woodland to the road as it was going to be quicker and we were now short of time. Somewhat tedious plod back along the road at the end.
Crackin wee adventure though, even if it was a slightly long lunchbreak - oops!
6 PM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 9.47 km (6:46 / km) +39m 6:37 / km
ahr:124 max:155

Warm up with DR out to the petrol station. Had been planning a wee jog round the river bank with J but this kind of set us off in the wrong direction... Turned round from there and headed back through the woods with J and WB and then on out the DW to west end of the village before picking up the river bank. It was a lovely cold crisp evening and I felt a lot better than anticipated, so just kept going until we eventually got back to the bridge. Rather longer than planned and E was waiting for us rather than v-v!

Ski Touring 1:45:00 [2] 11.33 km (9:16 / km) +239m 8:23 / km

Wee opportunistic trip out with E from above Lochnagar distillery over towards Glen Muick. On the metal-edged nordics. Plenty snow but pretty soft and wet. Had a few waxing issues and ended up using kick skins most of the way, but a nice cruise back down the hill at the end. Ran out of day or we would have gone further.
So much for my rest day :-)

Orienteering race 1:13:23 [3] 9.24 km (7:56 / km) +4m 7:55 / km
ahr:153 max:180

Tech 10 #2 Balmedie brown. Plan was to focus on making it smooth without worrying about speed. In practice there was a quite a lot of dead running, so pushed more physically than I might have expected to. Pleased with a lot of it. 2 mistakes - one at the NW end where the dunes have all changed and got on the wrong hill. Second was out of the 3rd last where I was with JH and lost focus trying to chase after him out of the control. Lost map contact and then lost confidence into the circle. Easily fixed! Pleased with how legs felt after yesterday.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Running 2:30:00 [3] 19.7 km (7:37 / km) +648m 6:32 / km
ahr:132 max:172

Glen Tanar with J, RB, BS, ME, SR, JS. Wee bit of snow under foot and overhead but kept reasonably sheltered in the trees. Frst up Creag na Slice, then back down to the glen and up the other side onto Baudy Meg. Good bit of climb whilst staying low. Felt ok physically, but generally a bit drained - not too surprisingly. Difficult to stop myself from playing as long as the body seems to be holding up ok, but should build some more R+R into the plan somewhere.

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 6.78 km (8:07 / km)

Tech 10 #1. Dinnet east - giving it a reccie for training next week whilst getting some good compass practice in too. Legs tired.

Ski Touring 2:30:00 [3] 12.35 km (12:09 / km) +700m 9:28 / km
ahr:129 max:175

Grabbed the chance of a half day ski tour with GB and RB above Glenshee. Headed west towards Butchart's corrie and then traversed round to climb onto Carn a Gheoidh. Nice descent to the north then climbed back up to have another go. Pretty tired by the time we were traversing back. Wind strong at times and briefly got a bit exciting on an exposed section of the ridge. Excellent snow if you pick the right destination, as we did. Great to have GB leading the way and giving a few tips. Just wish I could get out more than once a year and I might improve a bit and not forget how to use the kit each time! Out for 3.5h total, but much faffing with skins on / off.

GTJaP D5 Chalet de la Frasse to Giron. Got off to an early start as forecast was for rain to come in around 11 - and sure enough it did. Along with a nice headwind heading out along the valley. Slow going early on through soft crust snow / slush so decided to take a few short cuts and make things easier by sticking on the road for longer than planned. As soon as we’d left the road it was icy slush in the rain and continued much that way for the rest of the day. Think there could have been some nice scenery and good views on a different day. At least I managed to use most of the kit I’d been carrying for 4 days. Got to Giron soon after 3pm. The escape plan from here was a bit vague as there’s no public transport, but it just so happened that the first person we came across was about to do a hotel pick-up from Bellegarde where we were staying!
175km and 5000m in 5 days . Nae a bad wee adventure and body seems to have held up ok. Think I might wait until the snow’s looking good here next time, then book a late entry for the Transju race.

GTJaP Day 4 Chalet Gaillard to Chalet de la Frasse. First 10 km on some lovely looking pisted cross-country tracks. Trying to keep off to the side and think we provided more amusement than we got dirty looks. Made for quite easy running and legs were feeling surprisingly ok. Stopped in les Rousses to buy some cheese and sweeties, before continuing on up to Belvedere des Dappes via the downhill ski slopes. From there it was only 6km to the chalet, except that a detour had been signed to avoid some environmental protection area. Then met some environmental police and had an interesting discussion... think they were scolding us for being on the ski tracks whilst pointing to the raquettes route... all fine except there hadn’t been one of them up to that point and there was zero signing as to where it actually went! Chalet in good time for a nice chill and recovery before the final leg.

GTJaP D3 Source du Doubs to Chalet Gaillard. Blue sky day :-) Ice was the only enemy early on with yesterday’s slush / melt having frozen overnight. Made good progress on snow free valley tracks before climbing back into it . Then found ourselves on some prepped ski tracks on the descent to Chapelle-des-Bois. Tried to stick to the edge and was maybe just imagining some scowls from passing skiers. Just midday when we reached C de B and with only 7 km to go we were able to enjoy a relaxed soup stop. Steep climb up the escarpment on the other side of the valley before a pleasant (if lumpy snowy) trot along the top with some good views. Not in any sort of rush but still at the refuge by 3pm. Almost felt like a holiday today!

Running 6:30:00 [3] 38.2 km (10:13 / km) +964m 9:04 / km

GTJaP D2 Verrières to Source de la Doubs. Woke to find that the forecast rain overnight had fallen as snow and the visibility was also bugger all. Long way to go again and knew that progress would be slow through the deeper snow. After spending the first 10km rueing our lack of planks, it started to rain and the snow turned to slush - no more fun but at least skis wouldn’t have helped! Made ok time to Hôpitaux-Neufs and after a coke and crisps decided to crack on with plan A up onto Mont d’Or and then a long steady descent through the forest. There was a bit of Scottish downhill ski dodging on the climb but soon we were on the ridge and even met some other people without skis on their feet. The snow turned to slush and then disappeared completely on the run down through the forest. Good day which for once turned out less epic than anticipated. Beer earned nonetheless. Felt less sore and tired at the end than yesterday, maybe due to lower intensity. Various foot / achilles niggles from all the snow running though.

GTJ a pied D1. Brenets - Sur le Monts des Verrières. After a good journey managed to make a mistake in the circle getting on the local train rather than a bus at Le Locle and ending up in Brrnets 3km from our planned start point at Col des Roches. Eventually got ourselves back on route though and following the ridge line of the Swiss French border, heading south. Mix of trails from tarmac to dirt road, single track and less. Enough snow on the ground to make running a bit awkward but had defo made the right decision to leave the skis at home. Plodded on steadily . Grey day with some wind in the open areas but getting reasonable shelter in the forest. Thankfully the threatened storm conditions didn’t arrive until we were snug in our auberge for the night. Long way and a nav error late on didn’t help - adding a couple more km and good bit of extra climb. Recovering well in the luxury of an upmarket overnight stop - won’t be like this all the way!

7x2'+1' reps up to the Craigmore trig point. Solid. Weird feeling getting the legs to move faster on the flattish 2 at the start - they're clearly not used to this!

Running 25:00 [3] 3.9 km (6:25 / km)

From Potties, jog out north track to start of reps, then back off the top of the hill after. Feeling sluggish at the start, but warmed up into it and a lot better by the end.

Easy spin out from Aboyne on the SD Rd to Dinnet then back by the DW. Snow flurries and a bitter headwind on the way out. Discovered that the DW is currently being rebuilt for much of the return, and it was even less smooth than normal. Eventually bailed out to the A93 when I met the machinery. Cold hands and feet. Don’t do winter cycling usually.

Running 39:01 [2] 5.14 km (7:35 / km) +111m 6:51 / km

Jog round the woods to try and loosen off a bit. A few aches and pains from yesterday (mainly from my tumble!) and my back didn't like standing round at training this morning.

Running 3:15:00 [3] 23.5 km (8:18 / km) +1130m 6:41 / km

From Forest of Birse with J, BS, JS, SR and ME. Blowin a v cold hooly down in the glen which didn't bode well for the tops. Got a bit of shelter on the long climb up to Gannoch, but feeling pretty cold by the top - especially legs as I hadn't put my winter tights on. M didn't want to stop, so didn't get much recovery before continuing along the top. Caught my toe on a pebble and did a slow-mo splatter (seem to be getting a bit good at these) landing awkwardly on right hand as well as bruising thigh (again). Started to hail, just to add to the bitter gale, and was pretty unpleasant until we dropped to the Fungle. Climbed up the other side from there onto Mt Battock getting a bit of shelter and tail wind, so was able to relax a bit. Then it was just a long way back from Battock over Cock Hill. Another tough run where I spent most of the time clingin on at the back - will either kill me or make me stronger I guess! Good crack as ever though and Finzean FS felt well earned. Two fingers badly swollen up and bruising nicely now, but thankfully nothing broken.

Stolen run up Ben Vrackie en route between meetings in Dundee and Nairn. Very satisfying. Legs feeling a bit heavy but just loving the running. Bit of snow and ice near the top, so a slow careful descent.

Running intervals 32:00 [5] 5.2 km (6:09 / km) +100m 5:37 / km

Intervals round LK. 8x3’+1’. Legs still a bit sore from Sat (quads especially) and generally still tired, so felt like quite a hard effort. Brain not there either and having difficulty working interval times out! Distances didn’t reflect the effort but good to get it done.

Running warm up/down 22:00 [2] 3.2 km (6:52 / km)

Jog to start of intervals from Dinnet and back after

From Inchmarnoch with RB, JS, BS, ME, SR and J. Over the top to GT and Mt Keen track. R was keen for Keen and my arm was fairly easily twisted along with JS and B. Closed in on the top and then endured a brutal facial from horizontal hail stones on the way back down. Kept moving fairly swiftly as was pretty cold and wet by this stage. Climbed back out of GT onto the Pann - not as bad as I anticipated- and then a lovely run down Heartbreak Ridge to finish. Feeling well stuffed by the end but pretty happy with how I managed to hold up.
