Oh, how I do wish I could actually sleep on planes...probably got a total of 30 min across both flights :(
So I was very careful not to be at all rushed or panicked or hungry for the next stage of the process which involved sequencing 3 trains:
- Malpensa airport train (definitely not an express, despite being badged as such) to Milan central station where I had just missed one train I wanted but there was another half an hour later and this gave me time to consume what was basically an espresso Paddle-Pop;
- Milan to Verona (the connection I wanted to Trento should have given me 11 min between trains but this one was 8 min late, and I hadn't bought a ticket for the next train yet because of this, so in the end I had to wait 2 hours for the next train but this did allow me to leave my pack at the station and walk as far as the inner city, which I would have loved to explore more. I found the Roman ruins, but didn't get to via Shakespeare);
- Verona to Trento which ran 20 min late by the time it got there but this was perfect timing for Stefano to pick me up on his way back from event setup for the 5-Days of Italy.
So I finally got to my hotel about 10pm, 34 hours after leaving home and a very long time since I had woken up at 6am Friday...

running (Belair night) 52:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 22

With Zara/Callum through Echo Tunnel, up past Lower Waterfall (sadly not falling) towards the fire tower then back down QJD. Was glad of a thermal top when crossing the golf course!

Anti-inflammatories had kicked in so I thought I'd trot over to Mitcham & back. Quite pleased with the time because I would have been happy with 36 min. Still don't feel as though I've done enough sprint training before WMOC - does anyone know how I can get hold of sprint maps for Vienna?

Sitting's comparatively painless, but walking always stabs me through the hip, so I thought I'd see what running did - and actually the parts of me which weren't hurting or fatigued moved along fine (for a night time run) and even handled the tram overpass 'hill' ok.

If the sciatica which has been hanging around since last week is still this bad on Friday, I don't know how I'll go with 24 hours on planes and trains...

running race (Sturt Gorge trail run) 2:20:33 [3] 19.5 km (7:12 / km) +471m 6:26 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Slightly tempted to stay home in bed but I'd arranged to pick Zara up, and this sounded like an interesting run with no nasty surprises, as long as the river wasn't too deep. Maybe 5 degrees at the start @Blackwood footy clubrooms, and a lot of people were wearing thermals, but I figured I'd be ok for a couple of hours - and in fact it didn't rain at all.

Fairly obviously, this is a run which is downhill from the start and I didn't feel too bad, although took it pretty easy on the singletrack (which was basically the whole course). Probably shouldn't have worn my oldest shoes with the tread falling off, but didn't think that newer ones would have any better grip under the conditions. And I remained upright throughout...got a bit frustrated at the people in front of me pussyfooting every river crossing as though they were doing the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy!

A bit disappointed how many people passed me every time there was any uphill in the first half; guess this was a combination of lack of fitness, lack of traction and this week's cold. Didn't really matter though because I was out to enjoy myself rather than overcooking it. Perhaps I should have tried a bit harder, because I ended up 25 min behind Zara - mind you, she was 3rd woman :)
