Note
Today's exercise was to walk the 12km Barrk sandstone walk which starts from Nourlangie, past the galleries of rock art at Angbangbang shelter and a couple of other underhangs on the west side of the sandstone outcrop, then up a very rough track onto the sandstone plateau nearly 300m above. The track - of about the same quality and visibility as the Litchfield Tabletop Walk - winds its way among sandstone pillars on the plateau before descending a shaly gully to the Nanguluwur rock shelter, where we took a rest and admired the extensive variety of artworks in this gallery, probably our favourite so far. The final 6km was a lot flatter and easier going, but also quite hot by now, and so we didn't hurry, but were still glad to finish this in less than 4hrs' walking time (rather than the 5, 6, or even 8hrs which I'd seen from various information sources).
The best bit was that towards the end we saw a red-tailed black cockatoo squawking in a tree, then he & his friend flew off displaying their beautiful tails as they went, and they led us to the party tree where no less than 10 cockies were sitting around eating the gumnuts! I've always wanted to see a red-tailed black :)
