swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

Swimsuit had dried enough since yesterday (I draw the line at still-damp bathers) so I went in the pond again.

orienteering (Hawthorndene SS) 46:14 [3]
shoes: Asics GT-2000

Monday night run, on a Friday?

Not really, but F&T had set the Summer Series around Hawthorndene. And it was a good course - I took a long time to make up my mind which 5 controls to leave out of the scatter and was then still deciding on the run, the order in which to do the ones I'd chosen. Problem was, I couldn't run very well even though it was a nice cool night. Very stiff through back and hips and then as I was running down through the pine forest something became really nasty in my groin. I suspect it's tightness coming through from my hip but may have been aggravated by running in O shoes last week (and I'm not absolutely sure that my legs are the same length!). So that made the tail end of the run very unpleasant.

Warmdown was control collecting, then George & I got Fancy Burger :)

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

Finally got some energy back so I went for a swim.

running 54:00 [3]
shoes: Asics GT-2000

Only 2 of us at Belair tonight so this was a trainline-steps loop with my personal trainer, I mean favourite M21E: getting his take on the WC races (both in terms of Simon's own performances and also what he thought of the course setting) and making plans for control-taping trips to Wonna Creek.

Note

I know my lips got a little sunburnt last week, but really, three cold sores...? Presumably these are a plausible contributor to the sheer exhaustion.

Note

Still absolutely wrecked. Only slightly worried about the fate of the Repat in the wake of the Transforming Health paper; there are many credible rumours, but no certainty as yet.

Note

Definitely getting too old for 6am flights. Don't think I'd caught up from the one on Jan 2nd yet either.

orienteering race (Oceania long) 1:16:49 [4] 6.1 km (12:36 / km) +235m 10:34 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

Finally, a race with which to redeem myself :) Wasn't feeling particularly alert when I got to the event but decided to have coffee before running, which perked me up nicely. I am not sure that some of my route choices were the best, but that's the point of a well-set course; halfway through executing your chosen route you are still questioning whether another would have been better. And of course it was fun to have some of the same controls as yesterday's WC race did, particularly the one under the balancing boulder.

Tracy started 4 min after me and I hoped to hold her off as long as possible. First caught a glimpse of her approaching 5 from below as I was exiting it (I'd come from above on the long leg while she'd come around the hill) and stayed ahead through 6, 7, 8 and then on the longer leg to 9 I again went over the hill (must be getting some hill strength back) while she went around, but she got a better line through the green than me towards the end and was ahead from then on. I took a wide, around the road, route to 10 which wasn't necessary in hindsight, and wombled a little at the end of the leg but that was probably the most time I lost all day. Saw Clare Hawthorne who'd caught both of us, chasing Tracy out of the drinks at 12, then I took a conservative route around the swamp before going up the hill to 13 while they cut across the swamp from near the start and finished a couple min ahead of me.

Yeah, so I think this week has been the start of my WMOC training!
