shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Lovely run with Tracy in Lane Cove NP starting from Cath & Eoin's where her kids were kindly minded and George was provided with a cup of tea. A comfortable run at talking pace as we were being cautious on wet rocks; after the previous night's rain, rivulets and waterfalls abounded. The park was beautiful and the birds were cheerful.

(rest day)

Spare time went on:

a) writing report on my WMOC trip for the SA Orienteer. Writing everything down was the easy part. Culling it to a manageable length was far more difficult!

b) packing for Sydney to which we are flying tonight (good that George has made it home from Roxby Downs in time) and where we will watch the WOC Middle final at Tracy's :)

Attack of the Killer Physio

Had to report to Kath that it hasn't been a brilliant month hamstring/hip/ITB/groin-wise. But I was definitely more flexible and in less pain after being sat on and dragged around a bit and having elbows stuck into my glutes.

To the redwoods and back - but I ran across to Zara's to meet her first and eventually we met up with the others, who were looking for Steve & Tyson! Very slippery/squelchy along the creek.

Did something daft today - it remains to be seen just how daft. Paid my entry for next January's Two Bays http://www.twobaystrailrun.com/ (entries opened three days ago and are already up to 200 with a cap of 750) and somehow found myself entering the 56km; based on the philosophy that if 28km was so much fun last summer then it will be even better doing the whole thing again in reverse immediately after the first 28km. I'm sure there's a flaw in this logic; could it be that the second 28km will be predominantly uphill (except for 3km descent at the end which will destroy any remaining functionality in one's quads)?

Man, I was tired today! Even a second cup of coffee (very uncommon for me) didn't fully counteract the getting-home-at-11-from-meeting-last-night. But a nice long run freshened me up. Left work early enough to get across via Mitcham up to the singletrack behind Carrick Hill and the 4WD track behind Waite while there was still remnant daylight. Didn't go into the reserve to se if there are any feral deer gnawing on remnant grey-box woodland, as per the daily tabloid; did run down through the campus buildings thinking "this would be a good place to hold a sprint". (Note: SSS is coming!) Then a lap of Birksgate Drive and down past Waite and Urrbrae - said hello to the cows - and home. Hamstring held up okay but I could feel it gradually tightening. Composed a haiku about the things I saw on the way, to take my mind off this:
lying in gutter
dusted with windfall blossom
dead brushtail possum

I got to North Adelaide a few minutes late and headed for the hill on Robe Tce because that's where Phil said, last week, that the juniors would be running this week. Didn't find them there (turns out they went round the uni loop first so I got there before they did) so did extended warmup through Nth Adelaide then 6 x 400m on the uni loop, with 200m recovery. Between 93 and 98 sec which I thought was okay for a very dark rainy night with lots of huge puddles. Also, I didn't want to run so hard that I'd then completely seize up sitting in OSA council meeting for the next 3 hours.

(rest day)

Young Geoffrey had the plate and some screws removed from his ankle today - although the rod stays in his leg. So I kept an eye on him (if you're meant to have someone with you at all times for 24 hours after the general anaesthetic, would that person technically have to stay awake all night...?) but he was alert enough for conversation with Kate & Stuart when they came for dinner. A couple of days off work then he's meant to be driving to Roxby Downs on Thursday.

orienteering (Rock Oyster) 1:11:23 [3] 7.7 km (9:16 / km) +330m 7:38 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

Because the badge event was completely under control without any input required from me, I waited until the fog lifted then went for a run on what would in fact have been my course if I were running 35s (I knew where W21 got their extra 1.7km from, and it didn't inspire me). Some good route choice legs, so I had to think, even though I knew where the controls would be. Also, my own legs were feeling better than they did yesterday, although I was walking hills by the end.

My brief moment of sole responsibility in the finish tent afterwards was spoiled by the battery going flat and the computers threatening to die so after that I stuck to telling people where and why they had mispunched - it was surprising how many people went to the wrong control or missed one out entirely! Took Bridget control collecting with me and volunteered to get the most remote controls because they were least steep and in one case, could almost be collected from the car window.
