running race (Race for Life) 47:01 [4] 10.2 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 2140
This was originally advertised as a 10km (along the Torrens from Elder Park to Port Rd, all the way to Hackney Rd and back to Elder Park) then during the week course adjustments because of panda-welcoming-works at the zoo brought it down to an official 9.6 km, but actually I think it was over 10. I got 10.3 with Google Earth and 10.2 with a piece of string on the North Adelaide orienteering map.
Anyway, there were no km markers and in the end no official times because not everyone realised they had to do a second loop - the course ended up being Elder Park nearly to Port Rd, back on the south side to the weir, north side to Hackney Rd, south side back past Elder Park to the weir, north side to King William Rd and finish in Elder Park. Don't think the organisers thought through the start of the walk very well, as I had to fight through a lot of walkers without pushing them in the river (no one told them to keep left for runners) when starting the second loop, and Lauren said that when she came through they hadn't even started and were all bunched up under the bridge completely blocking the path.
Probably didn't matter as this was supposed to be a cancer fundraiser, and there was free breakfast at the end. I was pretty buggered from yesterday and started out a bit too fast, then plodded through the middle section and for the last couple of km just put my head down and followed the white line on the bike path, overtaking 3 women who'd overtaken me earlier, including the girl who was in front of me all the way, wearing track pants, at Mc Laren Vale. Turns out she's from Germany and prefers half marathons. Don't think this is a particularly fast course but it is pleasant enough.
Note
Later I spent the day at North Adelaide helping with the orienteering event for newcomers who'd received flyers from the City-Bay. After that I walked around collecting controls in 35 degree heat. The gardens and houses in North Adelaide are beautiful, especially the roses at this time of year. Then I met the parents who were waiting for the bus to come back from the camp, then I took Susanne to the airport and got home at 6pm. Now I need a weekend :)
Note
Entry for next year's World Rogaining Champs in NZ opened this morning and by the time I registered tonight there were already 200 teams on the list. Could be a bit awkward with a quota of 550 entrants but thankfully Zara and I fall into the "prequalified" category. $180 NZ per person is not a cheap entry.
Same thing happened with the Cradle Mt run - entries opened at midnight on the 20th and by midday the 50 spots were nominally filled and people piling up on a waiting list. No one has heard back about their official acceptance yet, but I think I'll have a Tasmanian holiday anyhow.
