After half an hour spent studying the Sydney Street directory, I had a plan.
From the hotel in Darling Harbour, across to Glebe (I am so glad I don't commute in Sydney) around the foreshore, across Victoria Rd on a footbridge where it comes off the Anzac bridge, up the hill to Darling Street, all the way through Balmain down Darling St to Balmain East ferry terminal and hopefully catch a ferry back to Darling Harbour. About 10km maybe.
The plan was slightly amended by:
a) dropping in on the Ogilvie parents to hear about Jenny's wedding plans
b) them telling me that the Darling Harbour ferry doesn't run at night and that i should catch one to Circular Quay, and it was closer to catch it from Birchgrove
c) them giving me verbal directions to Birchgrove ferry whereupon the mental map I made in my head didn't match the ground and I never realised that I had to go out on a long spit of land after crossing the park
d) it being dark and raining, and my being utterly unable to find the ferry terminal, not being exactly sure where i was, except that uphill would get me back to Darling Street, hopefully in enough time to catch the same ferry from Balmain East.
e) my getting to Balmain East with 2 minutes to spare, after a lot of dead ends and ups and downs!
The best bit was that the Darling Harbour ferries did still run, and one came exactly a minute after the Circular Quay one, and there was no-one to take my money at either end so I got a free trip :)
I do like running in the rain....
