7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:02:00 [3] 19.0 km (3:16 / km)

Couple min faster than on Wed. Lots of people camped at the caravan park, I bet none of them have to go to work today. Still, I've got 6 days off after this :)

8 AM

running (Bridgewater) 55:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

Nobody wanted a long one today, and my dispensary-legs were glad of it; across through Mt George to Woodhouse, slog up Old Carey Gully Rd, back down Old Mt Barker Rd. Pleasant scenery, company and running conditions - although a bit humid, nothing like Darwin will be.

Saturday Dec 29, 2018 #

7 AM

swimming 33:00 [3] 1.0 km (33:00 / km)

Grumpy and in a hurry before a full day in the dispensary. At least the water wasn't quite as warm as yesterday, when I called it quits after 200m because I just couldn't handle the claustrophobic sensation of submerging my face into soup.
6 PM

running (Belair) 31:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

After a long day on my feet in the dispensary, parked on Sheoak Rd then ran up the hill to Lower Waterfall and back down via Echo Tunnel. Couldn't believe how lovely it was to be completely removed from civilisation! Saw a huge yellow-tailed black cockatoo sitting at eye level, while I was enjoying the solitude at the waterfall lookout. They fly over our place in Clarence Gardens too :)

Friday Dec 28, 2018 #

7 PM

running (Sleeps Hill) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Up Hillrise, tunnel X-over, enchanted forest singletrack, back through cemetery. Not too bad out (I knew it wouldn't make 39 today...) but I'm glad I don't live in Pt Augusta!

Thursday Dec 27, 2018 #

6 AM

running 44:07 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Mitcham & back before work (urgh, 8am ward round) - saw a few nice gardens.

Wednesday Dec 26, 2018 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:04:00 [3] 19.0 km (3:22 / km)

Still nice & cool along the creek and I saw a white-faced heron but there wasn't time to dawdle because we were going out to "brunch" at friends' and responsible for bringing the penguin waffles!

8 AM

running (Belair) 48:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Christmas morning run! With Zara/Callum, B&S for a bit, Robin & Adrian at the beginning. Then I went home, made the house and dog look festive, baked a fish, took it over to parents' for lunch, took parents back to my place after lunch, discussed US geography, placed pieces of turkey & chicken & vegetables in the oven, went to airport to pick up Geoff, came back with him & we all consumed roast dinner & dessert, dropped parents home via all the suburban Christmas lights we could find, came home @10pm ready to collapse in a heap and received a t-shirt with the complete screenplay* of The Princess Bride printed on it. Best.Present.Ever.

*ok, maybe not every single word, but I've read through most of the shirt now and it's pretty darn close!

Monday Dec 24, 2018 #

5 PM

running (Shepherds Hill) 32:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

Just along the valley because I had agreed to subsequently accompany parents to church (full Mass complete with Nativity re-enactment, and the choir was pretty good - proper Christmas hymns; none of that Mariah Carey crap). I have a feeling that going to church on Christmas (or at any other time) is an activity more common among my fellow pharmacists than fellow orienteers...

9 AM

orienteering race (Macquarie Hospital) 18:03 [4] 2.3 km (7:51 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

An older-style hospital which had lots of smaller elongated (with arms & legs) buildings in parallel across a sloping parkland hillside, and a few patients sitting smoking on doorsteps wondering what we were all up to...

The prologue had starts at 30-sec intervals (only one course, over 70 entrants of all ages) and it was nice to actually catch up to and overtake some other competitors for once. Also I didn't feel too bad running (seriously, that's hardly been the case since Aust Champs) and felt like I got most of the route choices right although I can now see where I could have saved about 20 sec. Most importantly, was back in time to help G wrap Christmas presents for the in-laws - car bonnet made a good table :)
11 AM

orienteering race (Macquarie Hospital) 22:05 [4] 2.5 km (8:50 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Under pressure of a real-time chasing start for the final (although I didn't realise that the times were to be added together anyway) and getting a bit hot from waiting around in the sun, I completely missed a shortcut through an L-shaped building - admittedly this gap was hidden under the control circle - and went the long way around which was 40 sec less efficient, so a whole bunch caught me, and then I got flustered and made a parallel-building error on the next leg so lost another half a minute, so they all went past me, and the remainder of the race was a bit of a slog in a chain of people, although there were still some good alternate route choices. Also impressive results by junior Shinglers!

7 AM

running 36:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

By the time we flew into Sydney/waited ages for our luggage/paid $700(!) for 4 days' car hire/got to the Rydges @Camperdown it was after 10:30 last night and I was hungrumpy but we walked over to Newtown & found pasta at 11pm(!) and so this morning I had the energy for a trot down through Glebe to Blackwattle Bay foreshore, back up via Orphan School Creek. After hotel buffet breakfast G & I walked along Parramatta Rd to the markets and Gleebooks, which is kind of a destination/tradition when we're in Sydney.
3 PM

running 48:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Fairylands loop with Tracy, including detour to drop tomorrow's controls @Paula's, so then she came with us - it was quite a conversational run!

Friday Dec 21, 2018 #

7 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

In a hurry because of needing to finish packing for Sydney tonight, but couldn't manage to go any faster (incidentally, number of strokes per lap always correlates pretty well to number of min elapsed for 1km). Might be because of all the chocolate which it's been impossible to avoid ingesting around the hospital - everyone knows that chocolate actually has the density of lead, right?

Thursday Dec 20, 2018 #

7 PM

running (Belair) 42:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

With Zara/Callum after a false start where it quickly became evident that kelpie pups can jump fences...poor Roo-girl ended up with some nasty scratches from hauling herself over the barbed wire to chase after us, and had to be carried home & shut indoors :(

Wednesday Dec 19, 2018 #

running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Warm windy morning, trying to rain. Staggered across to Mitcham, then followed the creek to Heywood Park, Orphanage Park, back along the train line. Lightning didn't come any closer than 3km (as estimated by time from flash until thunder) until I was walking the dog afterwards, whereupon we both got absolutely soaked. Don't think it's going to make 35 today?

Tuesday Dec 18, 2018 #

7 PM

running (Flinders Uni) 47:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Casual exploration of the pine forest & 'gorge' tracks - discovered the MTB Singletrail To Nowhere, and took it twice.

Monday Dec 17, 2018 #

7 PM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:09:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:32 / km)

Not sure why I felt so wrecked today both mentally and physically, despite a fairly quiet weekend? Was tempted to take a nap when I got home from work, but fended off the Sandman by consuming junk food, then went out for a ride which was made harder by the fierce headwind, I mean gentle gully breeze from the east.

Sunday Dec 16, 2018 #

9 PM

running 43:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 2000-4

Around the suburbs to the west of us, in search of Christmas lights. Failed to find the truly garish house I'd spotted a couple of years ago but saw enough other luridness to make up for it. Legs a bit hammered from Killer Massage yesterday and walking up/down Mt Lofty with a friend this morning (in complete fog; there was no view from the top and no city to be seen anywhere) but felt better for the run. Also today we salvaged & cooked up all the apricots which hadn't been spoiled by either rain or birds and now the house has that comforting stewed-apricot smell which always reminds me of my grandma's kitchen.

Saturday Dec 15, 2018 #

8 AM

running 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

From Mitcham along Brownhill Creek, up Yurrebilla, back over Brown Hill and down, through the suburbs to finish. Legs didn't approve but the views from the top were magnificent. Still think it could be worth coming up here for NYE fireworks (9pm rather than midnight though).

Friday Dec 14, 2018 #

7 PM

orienteering (Glenelg Twilight) 31:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Scattered around all 20, a bit sad because my legs couldn't get above a jog - every time I try to go faster lately, hamstring threatens to tear - but hey, at least my jeans still fit, even after the enormous calzone I consumed for dinner (took parents to O with me, then we found an Italian restaurant in Glenelg with the Uppills and Bridget's dad and then I took parents to see the Christmas lights @Westminster School so now it's past my bedtime).

Thursday Dec 13, 2018 #

7 PM

running (Belair) 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Casual conversational run with Zara/Callum, admiring the greenery - everything's so fresh and clean after rain!

Wednesday Dec 12, 2018 #

7 AM

swimming 32:00 [3] 1.0 km (32:00 / km)

Urgh, chlorine headache.
6 PM

orienteering (Veale Gardens) 32:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

Even smaller group than usual tonight; we did a line course then 3 short control picks, then a couple of them in reverse order. Both knees and hamstring were unhappy but brain quite enjoyed this and it's a lot more fun than staying at work!

Tuesday Dec 11, 2018 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 41:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Fairly directly up to 2nd falls, then back down, on a deadline because of OSA meeting but we were all late anyway because Lucy's mum bought us ice blocks :)

Sunday Dec 9, 2018 #

8 AM

running (Bridgewater) 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

Made hard work of Wilson Rd-Mylor-Bandicoot Trail loop despite good weather, scenery & company, because legs were never really comfortable with running so I kept having to stop & stretch. In the evening took parents to the beach for dinner and heard about mum's encounter with Indian test cricketers!

Saturday Dec 8, 2018 #

10 AM

orienteering (Port Adelaide sprint) 23:30 [4] 3.5 km (6:43 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Missed the group because the website said 0930 so they were finishing as I started but I enjoyed splashing through the puddles by myself and managed not to stack it.

running warm up/down 24:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Over Birkenhead Bridge (don't know if it still opens?), back over Jervois Bridge. Newport Quays development looks like it would make an interesting - if narrow - sprint map but I'm not sure how you get into there. Afterwards discovered just how many shops there are on Semaphore Rd selling potential Christmas presents.

Friday Dec 7, 2018 #

6 PM

orienteering (Bonython Park Twilight) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

All 19 controls on the scatter (glad I didn't do an actual course because they looked horribly convoluted) at a fairly casual pace in deference to hamstrings (which particularly disliked bending down to punch plate controls) before going off to yet another work dinner (2 down, 1 to go, and that's not counting the ones I've missed/declined).

Wednesday Dec 5, 2018 #

7 AM

swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

Hamstrings have been a bit tight since spending all weekend sitting on unergonomic chairs at the AIS.
6 PM

orienteering (Flinders Uni) 49:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Four sprint sections which basically added up to two (one person's worth) of Angus' courses from the club relays last year, and we ran each section as a mass start, comparing route choices. I died on the first one because it was really hot in the sun, but gradually felt better as the shadows grew longer. Still walked up all the stairs though.

Tuesday Dec 4, 2018 #

6 PM

running hills (Morialta) 55:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

3rd falls loop, basically on my own because the boys were so far in front, not that this mattered since I'm still mentally weary from the horrible conference and thus happy to go at my own pace. Seemed warm in the sun although this was obviously an illusion compared to proper summer.

Monday Dec 3, 2018 #

Note

I'm slightly concerned by the degree of fanaticism with which some of my colleagues have fervently embraced the intra-departmental Christmas decorating competition. It's leading to some uncharitable one-upmanship, and the unappealing practice of splicing staff headshots with elf cutouts. Also it seems somehow not quite right that there's nary a hint of baby Jesus...

Sunday Dec 2, 2018 #

7 AM

running 52:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Some of Gossan Hill, Aranda and Bruce Ridge from the AIS, before part 2 of OA conference, which wasn't quite as frustrating today.

Saturday Dec 1, 2018 #

6 AM

running 1:07:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

The full length of Red Hill ridgeline, loop from Karina's (which is as far south as one can get and still be in Narrabundah), in pretty much the same time as when I last did this 4 years ago, so I guess that's not a bad thing? It was a glorious morning and my heart was gladdened by the sighting of a wattle tree full of gang gang cockatoos, but sadly this feeling couldn't withstand an entire day of OA conference...
