Note
(rest day)

Unlss you count riding my bike to/from Eblens at Kingswood where my car was being serviced. Not exactly the coolest day for it. Before work I spent all my time watering the garden and after work we had arranged early dinner at Brighton beach with friends and their baby. When I rang a week ago to book the restaurant of our choice I wasn't told that there was only a NYE set 3-course menu at $85 per head, so we were startled to find this out, but the food was really good, and we all managed to savour all 3 courses while simultaneously entertaining the baby who was pretty well behaved considering that it ended up being way past her bedtime. Then George & I drove to Marino (anyone who has run summer series there will know which lookout on the clifftop we found to watch the fireworks from) so that we could simultaneously watch the 9.30pm fireworks emanating from Glenelg and Brighton jetties. As usual, we were home and sound asleep by midnight when all the suburban firecrackers, and then the dog, started going off...

Note

I have come into possession of the work on call phone. It's been a while - and in that time the handy little departmental Nokia has died and been replaced by a brick, otherwise known as an iPhone. A brick which will not fit into any of the pockets of any of my pairs of running pants (and even if it did, then said pants would fall down due to its weight). Hmph.
7 AM

running hills (Shepherds Hill) 15:56 [5]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

5 x 3-minute hills. Wasn't sure how this would go but figured I needed to do them anyway even if I was slow. Which I sort of was:
3:06
3:10
3:10
3:17
3:13
About 20 sec into each I would hit a truly lactic-hamstring patch which it was mostly possible to work through (except for on the 4th one) and the downhill recoveries on the singletrack were long enough for me to feel optimistic about the next hill by the time I got to the bottom.

running warm up/down 55:03 [2]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Warmup across to the park via my stretching post (tap) 22:45, downhill recoveries 10:36, slow jog home from the top of the hill 21:29. Infinitely slower running home through the suburbs than I was last night, but I was under no illusions about where I had already expended my energy!

8 AM

swimming 36:00 [3] 1.0 km (36:00 / km)

'Twas nice in the pond, but some of us have to go to work today...
7 PM

running (Shepherds Hill) 47:12 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

The shortest loop on a fine breezy evening. After a good stretch I didn't feel too bad, even though sitting had been bad for my hips during the day at work. Passed a family who were picnicking on the ridgeline and watching the sunset - hard to believe it wilI be 39 tomorrow. Made it home from the park in 11:16 as the result of a dedicated effort.

6 AM

running long (Crafers return) 3:09:00 [3] 31.5 km (6:00 / km) +700m 5:24 / km
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/au/crafers/795129351...

Brownhill Creek - up Tilleys Hill Rd (still don't know why Sus likes going up this so much) - Charlick Rd - Crafers - Sheoak Rd - down Pony Ridge - Brownhill Creek and home. Took a small pack, used the singletracks as much as possible, didn't count time spent on stops for drink and stretching. Calves didn't like the up (need new shoes) and hamstring got cranky by the end of the down, but generally not too bad considering that despite the rest day yesterday, I was still pretty tired. Gotta stop waking up at what seems like about 4am!

Monday Dec 27, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Actually I would really have liked to swim, but the pool's public holiday hours are 10am-6pm and we spent those hours going for a drive up the river to Mannum, Walker Flat and Swan Reach, in search of Geoff's boss who has a bush block out from Sedan. Met up with boss and boss' brother-in-law as they were about to go 'fishing' and so we spent the afternoon sitting by a billabong doing nothing in particular :) Was a good day out apart from the dickhead in the servo at Mannum who reversed into me while I was filling up, and at first didn't work out what he'd hit, then when he did he gibbered incoherently at me and drove off real fast instead of saying "sorry about scratching your paintwork". Both his intelligence and sobriety were questionable, I'd reckon, and his lack of teeth was indisputable.

Sunday Dec 26, 2010 #

8 AM

running 59:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

With Sus & Lachlan from North Brighton along the foreshore to Marino and back. Had to try not to step on any dogs on the sand south of the jetty! Happy not to be doing Two Jetties (reckon they would have been running on the road between Glenelg and Brighton anyway because the tide was in) and not so sure about the really long run I did have in mind for Tuesday; it may be a bad idea.

riding 40:00 [3]

To/from Lachlan's grandma's at North Brighton. Later I came back with George and the car and we took Sus & Lachlan to Tyson & Fern's Boxing Day BBQ which I have never before been to as we are usually in Sydney. I have very much enjoyed staying home this year :)

Saturday Dec 25, 2010 #

6 AM

running (Belair) 1:27:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

This was nice - an early Christmas morning Arrows group run with Susanne, Lauren, Fern, Tyson, Bridget, Simon, John! Through Echo Tunnel, up to the tap at the top of the park, out of the park along the railway line to the giant oak tree at old Upper Sturt station, up Station Rd, back into the park by the Upper Sturt tennis courts and back Long Gully. Lots of stops and conversation, pleasant rain (though it didn't last), two very alert emus eyeing us off and sightings of other orienteers: Lee/Sue Merchant, and Tony Rathjen.

Maybe we should formalise this tradition, not forgetting to include the informal picnic afterwards :)

Maybe also my hamstring/ITB/neuroma would benefit from not running Two Jetties tomorrow, as everything is really tight and I don't think I'd be any good at racing; plus my back/hip is still tender where Kath got stuck into it, and that was on Tuesday.

Friday Dec 24, 2010 #

6 AM

running (Belair Triangle) 1:03:00 [3] 11.5 km (5:29 / km) +270m 4:54 / km
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Actually an okay time, though it seemed that a lot of effort was required to achieve this. 32 up, 31 down (4.5km vs 7km I think). Neuroma became really troublesome towards the end but that drowned out the grumbles from my hamstring.

Thursday Dec 23, 2010 #

6 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

Note the time, people!

I had to be back and prepared for 8am Christmas breakfast at work for which I was providing Woddles (penguin-shaped waffles), as usual. I also managed to get the waffle batter mix lumpy, as usual, and had to wake George up to help me beat the lumps out of it (not for the first time, either. He says that getting pancakes lumpy is my special talent).

Oh, and we now have solar panels! I take no credit for the organisation and payment thereof but have some vicarious pride anyway. It turns out that a 55-year-old fusebox isn't set up to cope with them...so there goes another $3000. Apparently I am getting a new fusebox for Christmas :)

Wednesday Dec 22, 2010 #

7 PM

running (Belair) 57:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

The lake-trainline-lower waterfall-steps-Long Gully loop with Robin, Simon, Bridget, Fern, Tyson, Zara, Lauren. Followed by a picnic supper, which I really didn't need, as I appear to be turning into a Christmas cake (I'm sure it's just my imagination, or maybe my hamstrings, but I felt very pudding-like stumbling up the hills).

Note
(rest day)

Attack of the Killer Physio

It's been over a month (since I had to cancel a previous appointment because of taking George to the vet or something) and this was only a single not a double :( and so while I was delighted to see Kath, she only achieved about 25% of what was necessary...

Monday Dec 20, 2010 #

Note

Belair group run is happening 6.30pm on Wednesday this week, NOT Thursday, and will be followed by a brief picnic in the park (assuming at least one person remembers to bring drinks or nibbles), before we all rush off to do last-minute Christmas stuff.

Fanatics Half Marathon 6am Christmas morning is being considered by some of us as an option...not sure if I'm definitely part of the "us" yet. Two Jetties fun run on Boxing Day could be a less strenuous alternative (but with greater sun exposure 'cos it's at 9am).
7 PM

running (Monday night) 34:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

From Fern & Tyson's through the old Eden Hills O-map area across the train line, down to the creek, up the other side, back through Blackwood High. Lost Troy to a busted ankle early on and Tyson kindly walked him back. Eric, Fern, John & Bridget all seemed to enjoy hills more than I did but hopefully Kath will fix that tomorrow. She'll have a lot of ITB work to do!

riding 1:00:00 [3]

To/from Fern & Tyson's at Wilpena St, because I thought I should conquer my fear of riding back down the hill. Half an hour to get there up Shepherds Hill; coming home would have been quicker but I detoured via my geocache in Melrose Park, acting on a report that it had gone missing. Well, it's certainly not in the place where I hid it 15 months ago, so I can only assume that it has been muggled! To a geocacher, this is the equivalent of having a control tampered with or stolen :(

Sunday Dec 19, 2010 #

8 AM

running (Bridgewater) 57:43 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Only Fern, Tyson and I turned up to run this morning, because we have underpants of steel! (Admittedly, I only just made it after waking up at 7:30am, having come home from work Christmas dinner at 11:30 last night.)

We took the old, no-longer-marked Heysen trail along the creek, up the hill then down through Engelbrecht reserve to where the bridge across the creek has been out for years, which is why they rerouted the trail. Looking at the icy swirling waters, we decided that we didn't want our underpants of steel to get rusty, so went back into Bridgewater then out the other side under the railway line and back.

Reward was coffee at the Organic Market Cafe and then, since the Stirling Markets were on, I did the last of my Christmas shopping.

Saturday Dec 18, 2010 #

7 AM

running long 2:16:40 [3] 25.0 km (5:28 / km) +350m 5:07 / km
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Shepherds Hill, Eden Hills, Blackwood, Belair, Sheoak Rd, Pony Ridge, Brownhill Creek and home. Generally very tired but otherwise okay, except for the hamstring, which really wasn't (I can't manage to touch my toes at the minute) and made me very slow up hills. Halfway down the Pony Ridge switchbacks I spotted a pie-cherry tree. Pie cherries are tart and bitter but the acquisitory thrill of discovery made them taste all right just then.

Pretty weary afterwards - it's obvious that I'm not used to long runs lately - but lunch at Steve & Maya's perked me up a bit. Steve & I have come to the conclusion that $700 approx is a bit much to each spend on a weekend rogaining in Tasmania without our respective spouses (and I already spent $2000 on booking various domestic flights for myself +/- George last week). I was figuring I could easily find things to do with an extra weekend at home and then George said to me "but don't you want to do the long orienteering thing in Sydney that weekend instead? So now I'm thinking "hmmm, super-long world champs could be fun..."

Friday Dec 17, 2010 #

7 AM

running intervals (Moneghetti fartlek) 20:00 [4] 4.3 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Could have been worse. Aerobically I was fine but left ankle and right hamstring were a bit whatever. Still, I'm not as slow as I thought I might be.

running warm up/down 24:30 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

8 AM

swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

Got rained on quite heavily while swimming. This was a new and rather weird sensation.

Thursday Dec 16, 2010 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 58:30 [3] 19.5 km (3:00 / km)

Wow, my quads were tired today. Bike seemed to provide more resistance than expected. Also seemed as though both it and I weighed a lot more than usual - I kept looking over my shoulder to check for the invisible bricks which must surely have been attached to us.
7 PM

running (Belair) 52:28 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Along Long Gully, up and over the hill down into the redwoods and back along the creek with John. Tyson & Fern came too as far as Karka, and we met Zara on our way back. John made running look easy, which it certainly didn't feel for me, and although I managed to remain within chatting range of him on the flats I was a long way behind on the hills - he kindly came back for me though :)

Wednesday Dec 15, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

I hadn't planned to be slothful but the more I thought about it, the better the idea seemed, since I was kind of exhausted after last night's OASA meeting and hamstrings were very tight from unaccustomed intervals yesterday.

Tuesday Dec 14, 2010 #

7 AM

running intervals 13:40 [4] 3.2 km (4:16 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Around the outside perimeter of Mortlock Park. One lap is something more than 900m and the sides range in length between 210 and 245m but it's most convenient for me to think of them all as approx 200m.

200, 400, 200, 400, 200, 600, 200, 400, 200 with 200 float in between.

running warm up/down 32:50 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

warmup 8 min, warmdown 13 min, floats in between intervals.

Monday Dec 13, 2010 #

6 PM

running (Monday night) 40:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Sedate suburban saunter, or should I say sprawl, because there were 9 of us and we were spread out all over the roads like Brown's cows. The enhanced turnout (Fern, Tyson, Simon, Bridget, Eric, Andrew, Luke, John - Lauren ran to my place from work) was because I had lured people to an Arrows meeting with the promise of baked spuds.

Sunday Dec 12, 2010 #

Note

I see Dave Baldwin ran Coast to Kosciuszko in 33 hours. That's only 240km...about 225 more than we did this morning.
8 AM

running 1:26:10 [3] 15.4 km (5:36 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Bridgewater to Carey Gully via Mt George then back down Gully Rd and through the golf course next to Woodhouse, with Fern, Simon, Bridget, John, and initially Tyson. A few doublings-back, but if Lauren had been there she would have been running rings around all the rest of us. Nice cool morning yet we still looked in vain for a tap at Carey Gully, as we've done on previous occasions.

Saturday Dec 11, 2010 #

9 AM

riding 2:35:00 [3] 47.5 km (3:16 / km)

http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/au/adelaide/89312920...

Hands up if you know where Blewitt Springs is? Now keep them up if you have any suggestions for which way to ride to there from my place...

That's where Geoff has to go every morning to pick up the truck for work from his boss' place, and so that's where the ute has been sitting since Nov 18th when he broke himself. He wsn't too fussed about getting it back but I pointed out that the Hilux is a) half mine and b) sitting there giving the boss a guilt trip. Plus it was a nice cool cloudy morning for riding 40+km.

Down Daws Rd/Oaklands Rd to the Sturt drain then followed the bike path south along the creek to Darlington (stopping to sample a mulberry tree in Warriparinga wetlands). Up the hill on the 'veloway' alongside the Southern Expressway - only had to cross a road once before the end of the expressway by the Onkaparinga River. Then the bike path joins with the Coast to Vines rail trail through Seaford (I saw a couple of kids aged maybe 6 and 9 trying to kick/push start a 50cc motorbike which was blowing out lots of smoke, and as I passed I couldn't resist saying "you'll want to get that tuned") and ends up in McLaren Vale. From there I took Chalk Hill Rd, then a track which showed on the map as 4WD only and so I fully expected the sign to say "dry weather road only" but in fact it said "SAND TRACK - IMPASSABLE WHEN DRY" and indeed I had to push my bike, but it was only 400m of sand until I joined up with the road to Douglas Gully and Blewitt Springs.

So, this turned out to be way easier than I had expected and was a route with very little traffic and manageable gradient. It has definitely broadened my horizons :)
7 PM

running 34:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

With Zoe, from Stacey St, around Rymill and Botanic parks. We couldn't go into the gardens because there was an ASO concert on. Run was followed by dinner at the place on King William Rd which does great dessert calzone - banana & chocolate inside, with caramel custard poured over the outside, all of which ended up inside me :)

Friday Dec 10, 2010 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 57:00 [3] 19.5 km (2:55 / km)

I finally managed to complete all the steps required in pumping up tyres in the right order for once, and so I attribute the slight time improvement to this, and the potential to be late for work (!) rather than any increase in skill level. Was enjoyable and I didn't even mind the drizzle.
7 PM

orienteering race (Summer Series) 31:56 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Hackney, Scatter O, 15 controls - so 5 to drop. I dropped the same 3 in the north and east as the boys did plus one in the middle of the map near the river, and one in the south east. Couldn't decide which way to do the controls near the end so went furthest south then came back via the ones on the road around St Peters billabong but am still wondering whether getting them by an up-and-back, then finishing between the billabong and the river, would have been any more efficient. I couldn't have run any faster, however, which is a sad reflection on the speed I don't have - wasn't even puffing but my little legs just wouldn't rotate rapidly. This really should have been a course I'd break half an hour on.

Catherine Loye and Zoe Radford are both in town for the weekend so we had a gournet picnic by the river with them, which was lovely, and everyone sat there grazing until it was too dark to see. Good thing we stayed around, because after the event was all packed up and the organisers had gone, a family came back from their course wondering where the finish was - somehow they had managed to keep the registration slip still attached to their control card instead of it being detached at the start, and so the organisers didn't even know they were out on course (oops).

Thursday Dec 9, 2010 #

7 AM

swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

Perfectly normal swim.

I see that entries for 6 Foot Track filled up in about an hour yesterday. This online entry with a quota thing is getting ridiculous. Which marathon was it (Boston, I think) that filled up in about 20 minutes recently? Anyway, I have generously donated my Cradle Mountain entry to someone who probably wanted it more than I did. This seems like a more manageable run to train for at the minute: http://www.twobaystrailrun.com/ (one way, not return, if anyone is interested in doing it with me on Jan 16th) and it will be an ideal lead up to the Aust Champs rogaine, for which I hopefully have a date with Steve :)
7 PM

running (Belair) 1:17:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Lovely run in the park with Fern & Zara, up past the lake to the railway line, singletrack past the waterfalls, eastern park boundary to redwoods, up & over the hill and back Long Gully. Nice cool damp evening and I felt probably the best while running that I have since maybe Vic Champs. Underwrap meant ankle tape didn't cause any more blisters than were there already, but it did sweat loose, so I was pretty cautious on the singletracks. Now to build up some distance over the next 6 weeks...

Wednesday Dec 8, 2010 #

6 AM

running 1:16:54 [3] 14.2 km (5:25 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Shepherds Hill, Eden Hills, Bellevue Heights, Flinders Uni & home. Okay pace, I think, although it was pretty obvious to me that I've got used to just wombling along lately and need to kick myself in the bum - when nobody's watching (!) - and tackle some speedwork again. I've seen the creek in the park as full as this before now but not flowing quite so emphatically. Had to take a run-up to get across because the stepping stones were nowhere to be seen. (Envious of John running at Morialta yesterday!)
11 AM

Note

Geoff --> xray --> removal of plaster --> removal of stitches --> replacement with light plaster (not 100% essential, but insurance against tripping over the dog) --> no weight bearing for 3 more weeks, then light weight bearing after New Year. Geoff had told me that his orthopaedic surgeon was about 6 ft 6 tall and South African but not that he looks and speaks like (an elongated version of) Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Tuesday Dec 7, 2010 #

8 PM

running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Short Colonel Light Gardens loop. Nearly wasn't going to bother but there was a break in the weather after dinner, so I went out, but was rather too full of said dinner. Still very tired but feeling a bit more normal than yesterday, though I was definitely on autopilot: "oh, I'm on this street already - how did I get here?".

Big steps were made tonight (which is to say, small ones with crutches). George accompanied me to the supermarket; this may be the most fun he's had all week. He's really hoping they take the plaster backslab off tomorrow.

Monday Dec 6, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Absolutely wrecked today and feeling queasy/headachey by turns, which kind of started yesterday afternoon. I think it's a combination of being really really exhausted - possibly even from the rogaine still? - and not having got the salt/water balance right over the weekend, even though I kept pilfering Vegemite from the dining hall at the conference. (At least Robin doesn't appear to have breathed Bridget's second-hand cold on me.) Crashed out after work without bothering about dinner and didn't exactly wake up early Tues morning, by which time I was back to being comparatively normally tired, instead of incoherently so.

Sunday Dec 5, 2010 #

6 AM

running 1:02:46 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

I woke up at 5am from a rogaining nightmare (triggered, I guess, by showing Geoff & Alex the WRC map last night) but at least it had stopped raining. Putting on soggy shoes wasn't pleasant but I drew the line at still-sodden shorts and borrowed a pair from Alex. Ran up Red Hill and along the ridgeline; the singletrack gets very indistinct at the southern end and I copped a few spiderwebs in the face among shoulder-high grass. Saw a few roos including one joey who was really too big for his mother's pouch, but dived headfirst into it when he saw me coming, and as I passed by, there were still wriggling tail and feet sticking out in all directions!

Saturday Dec 4, 2010 #

5 PM

orienteering 32:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

OA conference orienteering event around ANU. John Scown had set Q&A, you could choose 30 or 45 min score. I chose 45 but had been around all the controls by 32. Should have chosen 30 and run harder...it was fun, though.
6 PM

running 1:01:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Did the usual and ran home to Geoff & Alex's in Narrabundah from ANU. The sky looked very black in the east and I could see it raining over Red Hill. As I came off the bridge over the lake the first fat drops hit and I activated my plastic bag stash which I had grabbed at the last minute this morning, being aware what summer rain in Canberra can really mean. By the time I had made it along the foreshore to Telopea Park I was saturated, just like the wedding party I had seen huddling (okay, so I like purple, and I didn't even mind the bridesmaids' violet dreses too much, but they were the exact same purple as the wedding car, which was a Commodore!)

Turned up Telopea Park and the creek was coming down, and how! I wished I had my camera but my phone was the best I could do...then I realised I was directly outside a friend's house, so I knocked on their door, dripped all over their heritage-listed house, and they all came outside and took photos too. It was pouring into the lake, completely over the bike path. By the pool in Manuka there was water well & truly over the road and cars were deciding whether to go through it or not. I went up through the suburbs a bit to find out where the creek originates, I guess it comes off Red Hill but I'm not exactly sure?

Friday Dec 3, 2010 #

6 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 51:40 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

The shortest loop through the park. Definitely smelled like summer. Couldn't muster anything more sprightly than a jog, but it was pleasant enough 'cos nothing particularly hurt. If I had a choice between going to Canberra for the OA conference this weekend and staying home to finally unpack/catch up with myself/do more housework/water the garden/put up Christmas decorations (usually George's favourite task, but he'll have to delegate this year) then I know which I'd prefer, but I'm not aware that I have a choice.

Think the dog may have to consider something vaguely resembling a diet - (and he probably requires solidarity from me). I realise he is built like a wombat, but it turns out he's 'robust' enough to be on half-strength dose of people antibiotics! Poor Geoff, on the other hand, is wasting away, and can hardly find a skin-fold to inject his 6-week-supply of daily blood thinners into. He's become very possessive of his coffee cup when I try to wash it up, which is ironic, because it's a drug company one, of course, and what it's advertising is an anti-osteoporosis medication to prevent broken bones...

Thursday Dec 2, 2010 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:00:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:05 / km)

'Twas a nice morning for this - the sort of morning when I would normally love to be running while it's cool, but I thought I'd give my knees a rest. As it was, my quads (why should they be lactic?) struggled with even the slightest incline, but riding back along the creek with the gradual descent was lots of fun.

Wednesday Dec 1, 2010 #

8 AM

swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

Sooo tired today and very stiff from neck through to knees. I don't think anyone at home is sleeping well at the minute (including the dog, who's been a bit rowdy in the night) but at least I've worked out that I don't need to perch right on the edge of the bed for fear of kicking any broken legs; I am entitled to a bit more space!
