7 PM

running 43:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance

From Fern & Tyson's on Turners Ave we (F&T, S&B, Lauren, Troy & me) went east up Suffolk Rd to Upper Sturt Rd - some people had never done the goat track before, and if they'd seen it in daylight then maybe they wouldn't have - and down Olave Hill Rd which gave us a beautiful view of the city lights. Perfect night for it and I felt stronger on the hills than I sometimes do, although by the end hamstring had an opinion.

11 AM

riding 1:00:00 [3]

Yeah nah, no way I was up for running 21km on pavement this morning even if hip/hamstring had been perfect, so instead I woke up at approx the start time of the half marathon and subsequently rode up to Wallaringa's event at Belair (Long Gully) whereupon I spent a couple of hours on the finish computer. Such a pain that all members of a group have to be entered separately in OE and, when they finish, then download the equivalent number of times to the number of members in their group - I didn't manage to capture all of these and so was struggling to sort out which were really missing runners, and which were part of an already-finished group, when we wanted to start control collecting.
2 PM

orienteering (control collecting) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Frank drove up to the top of the park and controls were collected in clusters on the way back down. This way I got to run through the nicest bits of the park without the slogging up and down. Worked out why V couldn't find the control she had trouble on, but it was correctly placed - just that many of the rocks in that area are about the size of those which seem to have caused people issues at the recent US champs!
4 PM

riding 45:00 [3]

Got dropped at the bottom of the hill (too slack to ride UP to either Belair or Blackwood from the park entrance, but my excuse is that hip/groin was twinging) and rode Brownhill Creek before heading home.

10 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 47:02 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Hamstring took about 20 minutes to stop hurting though it never really loosened up and all of me was just generally achy. Nice morning in Shepherds Hill though, and also nice afternoon at the Felixstow event which the Arrows were running - John set good courses but the turnout wasn't quite what we'd hoped for. High-or-maybe-low-but-definitely-laugh-light was the 'small weeing dogs' which, under the loose control of an elderly Chinese lady, trotted up and christened not only our noticeboards (don't tell Adrian) but also the backpack of the first competitor to arrive, who had briefly put her pack on the ground - oops!

8 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

Slept better last night than I had for the past week, so that's a start. Have definitely been sitting at my desk too much, though.
6 PM

running intervals (225s) 6:47 [5] 1.8 km (3:46 / km)
shoes: Saucony Jazz

I only had time for 8 crossings of Mortlock Park before it got dark but I doubt I had energy for more anyway. Appeared to get progessively less slow as I became more sure of where I was putting my feet. Back and hip flexors fairly achy though.

running (Belair night) 30:54 [3]

I piked when we got to the train line and surprisingly Tyson, Fern & John all came too. Zara & Simon ventured up the hill into the wilderness with Callum to protect them.

Note
(rest day)

Thought I would rest the tight spot in my knee/shin (but actually all of me is very tight, and I'm feeling generally a bit wound up about all the stuff I have to do, despite the lovely long lunch we had at the Lane Vineyard with Steve and Maya - they gave us a voucher as a wedding present and we convinced them to share it with us for Maya's birthday). Do I really want to run a half on Sunday?

8 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

Back a bit stiff.
6 PM

running 42:45 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 17

Tuesday nights from North Adelaide have started up again but initially only Simon and I were there and I figured that what would be an easy half hour run around the river for him was probably going to push me quite nicely. Down to the weir, up to Hackney Rd and back. Did a lap of the uni loop as warmdown with Vanessa after her intervals; we stopped to talk to Wendy (who is training for North Face 100) on the way.

10 AM

orienteering race (Blackwood score) 2:58:13 [4] 26.6 km (6:42 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Thought I'd better do some nationals rogaine practice with Mark, since despite having been friends for something like 21 years we've never actually rogained together. (He announced that he'd had pasta for breakfast - my sort of guy!) Anyway the map was 1:15 000 covering all of Blackwood/Belair/Glenalta/Hawthorndene/Craigburn/Sleeps Hill and we decided not to do the quarries even though Simon had said "start north" - but then Simon was intending to clean up!

Not sure if it was the most efficient route, but definitely steady - and you are always slower with a pack on. Headed S across trainline, up Magpie Gully, Coro Station, down into Craigburn, up & over to Frank Smith Park & Blackwood Forest, past the Uppills', up & over Main Rd, down Rosella past scout hall, up to & down Laffers, past Pinera station to scout hall on about 2 hours, so we definitely ruled out the quarries and got the ones down through Grevillea way and at then bottom of the big cliff by the trainline, then up past where F&T used to live, down Wilpena to Eden Hills station, up to Shepherds Hill Rd, and we had 7 min left so got the one in Blackwood High.

Could have been better to go down through the quarries first where there were an extra 340 points which Simon got which we didn't - and then to leave out lower points through Craigburn, but I don't suppose it matters since he was the only person ahead of us (significantly so).

9 AM

running (Morialta) 51:27 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Dropped ute to parents' so they can borrow it for a camping trip, rode home, walked dog, drove to Morialta to meet Vanessa for 9am and we did the 3rd falls loop. Took it easy because legs very tired and stiff, and was rewarded by the sight of the trickle still going over the falls. Pretty humid but I'm not holding my breath that there will be enough rain so that I don't need to water parents' garden over the next month.
2 PM

riding 30:00 [3]

Across to meet Sheridan for coffee at Stranded Store, it was starting to rain. Riding home again, I got both soaked and cold. Looks like I'll be hanging the washing indoors and quarantining the dog until he dries off.

Friday Apr 20, 2012 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 58:30 [3] 19.3 km (3:02 / km)

Legs a little tired. Dog more than a little disappointed when, after he'd eagerly watched me putting my shoes on, I then reached past his leash for my helmet.

7 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

Nice morning, finally found some momentum. And last night's killer headache (dehydration from yesterday's run?) had gone.
7 PM

running (Belair night) 59:43 [3]
shoes: Saucony Jazz

What's this funny annoying thing on my head? It's a headlamp! Yep, first of the darkness/torchlight runs. Long Gully, up & over the hill then back from the redwoods, chatting to Simon about sprint courses and mapping underpasses/multi levels. Ran Zara home across the golf course too.

7 AM

running (Belair triangle) 59:30 [3] 11.2 km (5:19 / km) +270m 4:44 / km
shoes: Asics Kayano 17

31 to the top, so down was 28:30. Equivalent to my best times from last winter but I doubt I was thirsty enough then to go all the way to the tap at the BP. Suspect my quads may have an opinion tomorrow (unfortunately my neuroma did, this morning). Question is whether I can sustain similar pace for a whole half marathon?

Tuesday Apr 17, 2012 #

7 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 1:01:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

3-Hills loop. Very nearly turned around and went home after 10 min, feeling about as flat as last night (breakfast probably would have helped) but once I'd made it up the first hill figured the rest wouldn't be worse. Did consciously try not to slacken off but still felt like I was plodding. Time not too shabby though.

Attack of the Killer Physio
Not that I didn't need poking and prodding, but the benefits of spending that time gossiping with one's favourite health service provider can also not be underestimated!

Note
(rest day)

Actually put running gear on and ran about 4 blocks (legs were moving marginally faster than brain was) but got sidetracked by a fejoia tree so walked home with its produce and taste-tested immediately. Didn't go grocery shopping or cook proper food either, just moped around and raided the chocolate drawer.

10 AM

orienteering race (Collins Creek Hagaby) 1:41:39 [4] 10.5 km (9:41 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

It's always fun to finish off a carnival with a wet day, right? I doubt anyone was particularly inspired as we huddled in cars waiting for the rain to ease before squelching to the assembly area (does anyone know if that Impreza has made it back across the creek yet?) but having a well-set mass start loop race made a potentially diabolical area into something almost enjoyable, and I'd venture to suggest that lantana is easier to run through when wet than dry (also when properly mapped - the vegetation was quite reliable on this map).

Hard to quantify how well I did or didn't run, as with a small field and 3 dissimilar-distanced loops with a common pivot control halfway through each, I'd see others coming into and out of controls, but rarely on the same leg as me. Having hanging control flags made them often easier to spot, and I read the termite mounds fairly well mostly. First loop I did cleanly, second loop I was too far right on the first control then ended up going all the way to/around by the fence on 3-4, hardly a necessary detour. Dropped a bit low on 4 also. On 3rd loop I started to run out of legs, and coming over the hill heading S looking for a depression went rather more SW and bounced off a control from a previous loop. Finished this one as Anna & Aislinn were chasing each other into the finish; slightly demoralising, but I was excited to catch a glimpse of Zoe & Rachel W coming out of the first control on the last loop as I went into it - then I bounced off the access track we'd walked in by, and had to have another go at it, so lost them for good.

So, errors could have totalled as much as 8 min, but I sort of enjoyed the challenge, and the absence of grass seeds. And the whole week, actually, but I wish I could get back to being faster again.

11 AM

orienteering race (Kelvin Grove sprint) 19:49 [4] 2.5 km (7:56 / km)
shoes: Saucony Jazz

Hmmm...I probably should have been disqualified for this one. Started out fairly cautious of my footing in new shoes (bought in the sports store in Murwillumbah because they were half price and in my size) and after rain.

Vanessa had already caught me a minute at 5 - where I read the outside corner of the hedge instead of inside - and then we both confused the hell out of ourselves on the way to 8, which was the steps at the bottom corner of the carpark (men's first control) and we both stood in the laneway outside the carpark's roller doors, looking blank. I was convinced that there had to be a way through the grey areas marked as undercover but that it was obscured by the circle (never even noticed the proper route around to the north) so went a bit further south, up the first stairs I found, found myself inside the carpark with no how idea to get out, not realising that I had just gone through a building marked as impassable! Had visions of needing to do laps of every level down the car ramps to get to the bottom, then spotted the stairwell in the NE corner, went down 3 flights and popped out on top of the control - before Vanessa did.

She passed me going up the hill, of course, and then I lost more time by going around 2 sides of the school instead of across the oval because the gate in the fence was marked as closed and I didn't even think of it being a crossable fence. Also not sure that my route to 13 was most efficient (going along the road on/off the edge of the map was best). So, generally a pretty dismal effort and I deserved to be almost last.
4 PM

orienteering race (UQ sprint) 20:24 [4] 2.6 km (7:51 / km)
shoes: Saucony Jazz

I had been wanting to run at St Lucia for some time, and figured Anna would have done a good job of the courses, even if a slight glitch in her chasing start calculations had me starting 1 second rather than 61 sec after Zoe! Was confused to find myself running S not W as I had thought, out of the start but after a slight hesitation by which time I had lost sight of Zoe and been passed by a few junior girls, I realised that was a valid route option anyway. By the time I got into the butterfly loops I had also got into reading the map, and managed the changes of direction pretty well. Enjoyed the building underpass towards the end, read correctly which level I needed to be on, and caught Katelyn at the wheelchair ramp (although she had taken a suboptimal route on the long leg because she read the doubly-drawn border on the road as an impassable wall - there were a couple of places where the road edge looked like a wall) and then it was a sprint finish between us which was rather fun.

Much cleaner run than the morning and although not really a better placing, the times were tighter, so 3 min down is better than 5.

7 AM

running 46:40 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Started off along road towards Mt Warning, following the bike path through the river flats, then up the hill and back through the suburbs which are obviously built on higher ground for a reason. Nice views. Very tight in knees and shins because of no cushioning in these shoes.

Finished off past the swimming pool which looked inviting (for Blair's future reference, the 50m outdoor pool in Murwillumbah is still open at this time of year, but maybe it shouldn't be, because 23 degrees was literally breathtaking and too cold for me to properly swim. The indoor 25m pool was at 29 degrees and too hot for me - call me Goldilocks).

running 31:29 [3]

Around Murwillumbah, which town's name I still struggle to pronounce correctly. Very stiff today: staggered across the river from the YHA to the tourist office, memorised the map, went up the lookout and back around the hospital (big for a town this size).

orienteering 2:01:26 [3] 8.1 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

Really didn't have the energy for 8km on the Cascades today although I had been looking forward to it. Susanne materialised at the start, not having entered, and I talked her into coming around with me. We alternated legs on map memory, which made the course a lot more companionable. Memorising worked very well for about 90% of the leg and failed woefully in the control circle about 90% of the time! Very hungry and tired towards the end but happy to have spent some quality time with my only sister :)

Which is to say, driving 3 hours each way from Stanthorpe to Mt Tamborine (thanks to George for chauffeuring me & mum & Sus) to visit mum's sister and her husband.

10 AM

orienteering race (Easter relay length) 55:39 [4] 5.4 km (10:18 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

Well, I managed to sneak into the top 10 but only because Rachel didn't run due to injury and also because of all the other girls not present in Qld over Easter. Admittedly I also had a fairly clean run, and found this map easiest to understand/predict of the 4 days. Probably didn't need to take the train line which went very wide on the long leg 4-5 but after Sat I had no conficence in going direct - and that leg took me 11 min when strtaight would have been at least 9. Was a little far to the right going up the hill to 6 but worked it out okay, and very clean through the rest, so finished Easter on a satisfied, if grass-seedy, note.

Was informed afterwards that I run all wrong with the way my feet land - mainly on my heels, which is because I daren't risk landing on my toes and causing further ankle damage. But heels gives me no forward momentum and does bad things to hamstring - and I can see that I've got significantly slower since doing my ankle in Sept 2010. Anyway, in the evening Susanne tried to show me how to jump over logs properly, using the laundry basket as an obstacle (thereby proving that I am a basket case :)

Sunday Apr 8, 2012 #

11 AM

orienteering race (Easter long) 1:57:53 [3] 11.1 km (10:37 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

This would have been a good spur-gully map for a long day (although I don't know of anyone who wouldn't have been happy with another day on granite) if it wasn't for the erratically-mapped lantana making going direct - which I sensibly didn't do on either of the long legs - unequal to the track options. Oh, and the really horrible little seed-balls at thigh height which stuck to, and penetrated through, O pants and socks, making the sensation of running while being sandpapered deeply unpleasant.

Overshot the 1st control into the next gully and Susanne had already caught me 2 min there. Going into 5 (after a track leg where I saw Bridget & Anna going the other way) I saw her coming out, then Ilka, Rachel, Tracy all passed me down into and up out of 6. From 8 I briefly considered straight then saw Simon heading for the road so did likewise. Once I had turned W into the forest Aislinn passed me and I kept her in sight until the steep uphill. She was well ahead of me coming out of 9 as I went in. 10 had no water already with all the senior men and many junior men still to come through. I foolishly decided that straight south to the track would have less prickle agony than direct SE to 11. In fact it took longer and hurt more. Misread the pits at 11 but got a drink. Just got slower after this as it chafed too much to run faster - at least I wasn't overheating, I guess. Misread the creek at 13 and saw the boulder my control was on but thought it was a cluster at the creek junction upstream, so overran it (guess I was getting a bit of brain fade towards the end).

Finished feeling like I don't know why I bother training since everyone who does far less than me, can still come out and wipe the floor with me in a long race, without even trying. And I used to be comparatively good at longs, didn't I?

Saturday Apr 7, 2012 #

10 AM

orienteering race (Easter middle) 48:16 [3] 4.6 km (10:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

Even though I'm often a bit unsettled until after I've chaired my technical meeting on the Saturday of Easter, I still don't know how I came to bounce off control 6 on the way to 1. I was so sensible and cautious with my bearing for 2/3 of this long leg, then somehow when passing a rocky knoll rounded it instead and started heading into flat vagueness at 90 degrees to where I should have been going. Or something. Thought I saw the fence in the distance so corrected my bearing to come at the control from (imaginary) S figuring I'd somehow overrun the rocky ridge. Then I saw a control on a solitary boulder. Nearly ignored it but on second thoughts checked the number and it was 6! What the? There's 3-4 min lost right there.

I really struggled to lift my legs over anything in the terrain, not only the logs and rocks hidden in the grass but even the grass itself. Was reminded of Badja where I have a serious lack of momentum (and which terrain suits Bridget equally to today's, methinks). Also my bearings were weird in a few places. Too far R leaving 3 but corrected on way to 4 where I saw Lauren. She was off into middle distance in no time while I plodded along, but she dropped even further low on the bare rock slabs than I did, and continued beyond the point where I realised I needed to climb a bit to 5. Slow through the junk to 6 and 7, picked pace up a bit after crossing the fence to better grazed country, but was absolutely shocked to be 12 min behind Bridget.

Friday Apr 6, 2012 #

11 AM

orienteering race (Easter Sprint) 21:26 [4] 2.3 km (9:19 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

This was a good area and course for a bush sprint. Started off okay but overran 4 to a kiddie control on the fence and Laurina had caught me a minute before 7. I had actually caught Kellie a minute by the spectator control but threw it away by climbing unnecessarily over the rocks and then heading for the wrong fence crossing across the paddock (too busy watching where I put my feet to read the map properly) and ending up quite a way N of control 15. The mistaken fence-crossing eror was a common one and cost people at least a minute but I reckon I was slower on the uptake than some. Also veered a bit on the next control and Bridget caught me 2 min, then Rachel West at the end.

Note
(rest day)

6am flight to Brisbane with mum & George. 6pm arrival at our cottage in Stanthorpe. In between we did a massive grocery shop, picked up Lauren and squeezed her in among the groceries, drove up the mountains and the back roads to Queen Mary falls, encountered Blair there but sadly no bowerbirds this time. The King parrots were as plentiful/colourful as ever.

11 AM

orienteering race (Blood & Thunder Gully OY) 1:12:47 [3] 8.2 km (8:53 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

Nice parents picked me up from the airport at 8am and we went to Blood & Thunder. Started from Chalks which hasn't been used for a while because of a lot of felling and regrowing in the pine forest. Beats me how running around granite yesterday at 1:5 000 was any sort of practice for looking for subtle gullies in pine forest at 1:10 000, but I did okay. I think because I approached with caution, and aiming off, and slowing right down into the control circle. Got good at estimation of direction while ducking and weaving, because it wasn't always possible to follow down a row, and unpleasantly the young branches at arm height impeded progress. Probably lost a couple min all up on small fritterings within the control circle, and definitely need to give my core muscles (such as they are) a workout or few this week.

Warmdown was control collecting, then we went to the farm via the secret quince tree which was unfortunately fruitless (found another source though). Long day, and full weekend, but can't believe how much I enjoyed all of it.
