Note
(rest day)

Completely, utterly stuffed.

Tuesday Nov 29, 2011 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 45:43 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Runnn with Johnnn
We went up Deep View but not all the way into 3rd falls because it's so overgrown. All of me was fatigued & lactic, from head to toe. Glad to have made the effort though.

Afterwards I heard someone saying "get the ten cents" and was amused to realise it was a guy telling his dog to pick up a can for the deposit. Maybe I should teach Meatloaf to do that to earn his keep!

Monday Nov 28, 2011 #

6 PM

riding 1:04:00 [3]

To from Fern & Tyson's; up Shepherds Hill Rd, down Gloucester Ave. 32 min each way - legs were slow, presumably from Sat.
7 PM

running (Monday night) 36:51 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Around Eden Hills with Troy, Tyson, Bridget, Simon. Kept it short in order to get back for communal sampling of flavours of potential wedding cakes.

running long 1:18:40 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

To say I struggled this morning doesn't really cover it. I had such bad cramps which came on during the concert last night that they resulted in my throwing up dinner afterwards :( and they were still troublesome this morning, plus I hadn't dared eat anything much, so even though my legs felt okay they were really empty, and so was the rest of me, and I didn't get to do a beautiful morning run any justice. Set out with Bridget, Simon, Lauren, John, Fern east towards Woodside Rd and Hahndorf, with the intention of doing the Cox Creek-Mylor CP loop but when we got to the Taminga Grove turnoff I had to sit down and so Fern & John kindly escorted me up the hill back into Bridgewater while the others went on.

3 PM

riding 1:53:00 [3]

Since we were going to a concert, er I mean festival*, at McLaren Vale, I deided to ride there and be met by Geoff with a change of clothes. This worked out well, although heading south for a couple of hours was into a headwind nearly all the way. From Reynella I decided to take the Coast to Vines rail trail which parallels Main South rd on the east side, rather than the bike path alongside the expressway which would have been more exposed and has more ups & downs. Favourably impressed with the rail trail; even though it is a bit slower and has more road crossings, it was more scenic and sheltered.

*The Gorgeous Festival**. Not a particularly original name, or very well promoted/attended (possibly because of $100 tickets - and they would have done much better not to charge twice that for an enclosed seated area right at the front with hardly anyone in it) but a good lineup including Josh Pyke and Icehouse. Now, if ever I am a guest on Rockwiz, I will have to answer the question 'what was the first album you bought?' with Man of Colours (but in actual fact Susanne & I bought it jointly at the newsagent in Pt Lincoln, Christmas 1988). And I will say that although Iva Davies looks nothing like he did in 1988, he sounds exactly the same, and I do like a band which doesn't rearrange its songs/instrumentation too much. So I was favourably impressed with the live music, although I did notice that it was possible to sit not so far outside the arena and watch it for free!

**I don't see how it can legitimately be called a festival when it only goes for an evening!

8 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

I like being in the pool when it's being rained on.
8 PM

Note

Went to the OrienteeringSA presentation night, came home with the John Hall Memorial Service award - nice. Guess I have been a bit busy doing stuff for orienteering lately.

Thursday Nov 24, 2011 #

7 PM

running (Belair) 1:15:28 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

To the redwoods then up the singletrack with Zara/Callum, Fern, Tyson, John, Andrew. Really pleasant night to be out in the bush, we saw the massive roo and his concubines. Z & I continued up past the dam to Jubilee Drive and came back down the steps, then I ran her home across the golf course. We both bemoaned our lack of speed. I do love running once I've warmed up, but I stiffen up again so quickly afterwards.

Wednesday Nov 23, 2011 #

7 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 52:15 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Intermediate loop in the park. At first my whole right leg didn't want to play but it gradually loosened up so I could stride out a bit - awkwardly though because of hamstring. I'm not really sure what's set it off this time; the twinge I noticed when walking to work Monday was obviously a warning sign. Managed to get home from the park slightly faster than I've been doing lately so that was good. Not sorry though that I slept through my alarm and didn't have time for a longer run!

Tuesday Nov 22, 2011 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 57:33 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Thought I'd see what the new track does on the way up to Deep View, since it's now been configured as the default, going off to the west from the first corner and coming back in from the third corner. Basically instead of doing the shorter steep zig then zag, you do a longer flatter zag then zig. Just before joining back in at the 3rd corner, another track came contouring in from the left, but I'll leave exploring that for another day. Went all the way into 3rd falls; the blackberries on the way in are so overgrown that I exited by going up to the road and coming down from Pretty Corner, cautiously on the rough singletrack. Definitely I'm in one-speed-fits-all mode at the minute; not sure how to break out of it.

Monday Nov 21, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

But I did make an excellent lasagna for dad's birthday dinner.

Sunday Nov 20, 2011 #

9 AM

running 49:25 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Had plans of a terrain run in Mt Crawford forest but knee was twinging after yesterday's bike ride so just did a short loop on the back roads from our B&B at Springton. Nice to be out in the country, felt like a proper weekend away :) Especially as we afterwards drove the back roads from Eden Valley down to Sedan, back up to Moculta.

Saturday Nov 19, 2011 #

9 AM

riding 1:45:00 [3]

Headed for Brighton first then along the train line to Marino/Hallett Cove (steely greyblue sea & sky, and a headwind) and up the Coast to Vines rail trail until Reynella interchange and back alongside the expressway then Sturt Creek to Oaklands Rd (checked out the mulberry tree in the wetlands). Everyone else I saw was going the other way but I reckon that doing the climb gradually, then coming down O'Halloran Hill, was a good option - except that it started raining heavily during the descent and my wetness was complete by the time I got home.
12 PM

Note

Possibly more members of SA's orienteering population were present at a funeral today than are seen at the average Sunday event.

Friday Nov 18, 2011 #

6 AM

running (Belair triangle) 1:08:12 [3] 11.4 km (5:59 / km) +270m 5:21 / km
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Not sure what the purpose of getting up early to go running to beat the heat is when it's already 28 outside. Not sure that having breakfast first would have made much difference to my energy levels, either. Had stiffened up much more than I expected to overnight, so struggled up through Randell's about 5 min slower than I was doing in winter, then couldn't get up much pace on the descent because hamstring/ITB and general body fatigue were all limiting factors. (And the way work has panned out today, sleeping in would have been by far the preferable option...)

Thursday Nov 17, 2011 #

7 AM

swimming 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

More people in the slow lane this morning than had been in the whole of the pool when I was there on Saturday morning.
7 PM

running (Belair twilight) 1:08:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Wiggle deposited one pair of shoes on my doorstep so I ran in them. (I ordered two so hopefully the other will materialise shortly.) Lots of people out tonight - Fern, Tyson, John, Simon, Bridget, Steve, Aiden, Zara, and Andrew, who hadn't run since the City-Bay and therefore generously occasioned us a couple of nice rests at the tops of hills. The steps coming down to Long Gully from the old station are very overgrown; we need to go that way more often.

Wednesday Nov 16, 2011 #

7 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 50:20 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

Short loop to loosen legs. Nice cool cloudy morning (could only have been improved upon by actual rain) but I was too busy watching my feet, and they were watching the ground, so didn't appreciate the scenery enough. Legs will hopefully be happier when Mr Wiggle comes through with the goods.

Tuesday Nov 15, 2011 #

7 AM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 59:00 [3] 19.3 km (3:03 / km)

Hmm yes, knees are a bit tight. And I'm a bit slow. But the traffic making its way into the city was much slower. Even Daws Rd had traffic build-up. Basically, if you live anywhere south of the city and need to commute down Fullarton/Belair/Goodwood Rds between now and Christmas, good luck! Also, I came across Lauren running along the creek - no surprise since she lives right next to it.

Monday Nov 14, 2011 #

6 PM

riding 53:00 [3]

So, I haven't ridden my bike for a couple of weeks, which makes it completely logical that I should reacquaint myself with riding by ascending Shepherds Hill Rd to Fern & Tyson's. The return trip lacked strenuousness, however :)
7 PM

running (Monday night) 48:33 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Lovely suburban evening run through the streets and alleyways of Hawthorndene with Fern, Tyson, Troy. Bike-legs gradually got less lactic on the hills (and there were plenty of them) as we went along.

Sunday Nov 13, 2011 #

8 AM

running long 1:23:47 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

From Bridgewater Oval up through Mt George to Carey Gully, back down Gully Rd and through the golf course, with Bridget, Simon, John. Really pretty in many places. Felt a lot better than on Wed, was glad of a cloudy morning.

Saturday Nov 12, 2011 #

7 AM

swimming 38:00 [3] 1.0 km (38:00 / km)

Hips and knees took a long time to loosen up.
5 PM

running 34:20 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Thought I'd better stretch my legs after standing on them at work for 5 hours. Actually, they weren't too bad but my brain was ready for a nap!

Friday Nov 11, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Couldn't think of any form of exercise which wouldn't aggravate my knees & adductors.

Thursday Nov 10, 2011 #

1 PM

Note

Attack of the Killer Physio

Kath accidentally stuck a needle into her thumb instead of my leg. I consider this to be karma for what she then did to my hips with her elbows. Adductors were amazingly painfully awful also. Maybe some of this tightness is a Black Hill hangover? (The results still aren't up yet, either.)
7 PM

running (Belair twilight) 31:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

A bit physio-fied and a lot stuffed. So the short loop up past the lake to the railway line and back down the creek was plenty for me. Fern, Tyson & Zara didn't object to being deprived of a longer run...

Saw the biggest, most perfect full moon emerging over Mt Lofty as I was driving back down the hill afterwards. It was still daylight, and the sun was setting goldenly in the west.

Wednesday Nov 9, 2011 #

7 AM

running 1:20:11 [3] 14.2 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Shepherds Hill, Eden Hills, Bellevue Heights, Flinders Uni and home. Felt like an old lady today - all sag and no bounce. Nearly piked on the full loop again but had told myself I would do it and so I did. Knee nearly gave out on the steps down through the uni; that whole right side ITB etc has been becoming more average lately and shall be presented to Kath tomorrow as a problem for her to fix. Also, now that the dress-hunting is sorted, I can implement the new-running-shoe-reward option ASAP.

Tuesday Nov 8, 2011 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 42:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 15

I had a date with John! We ran up to Deep View, around to the top of First Falls, then up to and back down the usual southside track. Warm evening for it and very sweaty, so the stretching stops were good.

Monday Nov 7, 2011 #

7 PM

running (Monday night) 35:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance

Don't know why I felt like crap today; was seriously tempted to go home to bed but settled for physical presence albeit low productivity, at work. Not enough salt/water/sleep over the weekend, I guess. Anyway, a run in the rain with Fern/Bridget/Simon cleared the headache a bit.

Sunday Nov 6, 2011 #

7 AM

running 1:08:36 [3]

The smell of a Blue Mountains morning is pretty good too, especially when contrasted with the subsequent warm day in Penrith. (I guess we just don't get that dampness in Adelaide.) Usual pleasant Red Hands Cave-Campfire Creek loop from the gates of the national park at Glenbrook. Less wildflowers but more birds than in August. I startled a lyrebird scuffing up the leaf litter - didn't know that they can fly but this one took off to the top of a tree when it saw me! Coming back up from the Causeway, a female cyclist started the long slog about 100m ahead of me, and I just managed to catch her at the top.

Saturday Nov 5, 2011 #

9 AM

running 41:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

There's something about November in Glebe, or maybe Sydney in general at this time of year - the purple of jacaranda trees and the smell of jasmine emanating from absolutely everywhere. Up & down some little steps and laneways, around the waterfront of Blackwattle Bay and Bicentennial Park - nice. Lots of dogs, dogwalkers, runners and rowers, and a great view of the Anzac Bridge.

Friday Nov 4, 2011 #

7 AM

running (Shepherds Hill) 55:06 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2150

Aargh, this was a bit horrible. I mean, it was a lovely morning, and I had grand plans of a run up through the uni, but hamstrings just wouldn't cooperate. Stretching last night probably didn't help - I took advantage of the person who normally laughs at me having gone to Ceduna overnight, and so did the full core workout. (Also, I really need to throw out a couple of pairs of shoes which, while still structurally sound, kind of lack cushioning by now.)

Thursday Nov 3, 2011 #

7 AM

swimming 34:00 [3] 1.0 km (34:00 / km)

While driving to the pool I spied Simon emerging from the bakery en route to work :)
6 PM

running intervals (Moneghetti fartlek) 20:00 [4]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

Gravel tracks at Belair again. Hamstrings were pretty tight by the end. I blame the swimming.
7 PM

running (Belair twilight) 53:40 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

To the redwoods and back with Zara, Steve, Fern, Tyson, John (who ran all the way!). Also warmup for fartlek 7 min.

Wednesday Nov 2, 2011 #

6 PM

Note
(rest day)

I put my running gear on after work but then parents turned up early for dinner and by the time I had driven them home afterwards it was sort of late and I didn't feel particularly dedicated to the running cause...

Tuesday Nov 1, 2011 #

6 PM

running (Brownhill Creek) 50:48 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2160

From Lauren's new abode by the creek at Mitcham, along the creek trails to the bottom of Pony Ridge and back, with Fern, Lauren, Bridget. Nice to do this run without slogging through the suburbs first; legs still a bit tender on the roads. Communal dinner afterwards was fun :)
