7 AM

running 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 24

Over to Hawthorn Oval, 6 x runthroughs on the grass - which felt ok - back again before either the traffic or the temperature got too unpleasant. Running a bit bingo-wingedly because of underarm chafing due to last night's loose running singlet :(

7 PM

running (Belair) 1:09:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Seemed to take an age to get as far as the redwoods, but going up the singletrack to the top of the park was ok, and as I stopped to catch my breath there and admire the sunset I realised that it would be getting dark in 20 minutes' time, so I hotfooted thirstily all the way down Queen Jubilee Drive and made it to the bottom of QJD in under 19 min - didn't know that was possible!

Note

Calves were hammered from running on soft sand last night in new shoes - oops.

8 PM

running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 24

After dropping some blackberries to parents, I headed to the beach at Somerton, where I just happened to encounter Meredith, so we ran to Brighton jetty & back together :)

8 AM

running (Bridgewater) 1:12:30 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

When I got home last night my legs felt like they had done a 6hr rogaine, and they weren't much better this morning, so although it was still nice and cool and I had been keen to do the full Carey Gully extension, I was lagging some hundreds of metres behind the group right from the beginning and therefore cut it short at Bowling Green Lane. Fern kindly came with me, which was nice. A bit horrified to be 5 minutes slower than usual for this loop; something must be not quite right?

Since I'd given Toby a lift to Bridgie, he was obliged to come blackberry picking with me afterwards, and we were both well satisfied with the haul we got near Woodhouse while dodging the golfers.
7 PM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:03:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:14 / km)

Had to evict a redback spider from the crankset before setting out; probably should ride my bike more often than every 2-3 weeks. And may even do so now that my hamstring *seems* to have settled.

Note

Long day out in the sun at Narrinyeri Hills taping control sites for April 7th. At least there was a coolish breeze and I had taken enough water with me (drank 5L in total between leaving home and returning 9hrs later) plus adequate snacks & supplies. I love this map, but it's so dry out there currently that even the correa bushes are dying off :(

Spotted a sign hanging from a branch, which stated "geocache secretly hidden here" so I looked behind the nearest rock, and what do you know? A cache which Tyson appears to have stumbled across also, when last we had an event here 18 months ago.

6 PM

orienteering race (Blackwood/Karinya SSS) 24:40 [3] 3.0 km (8:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Fairly straightforward course from Angus which favoured runners rather more than is my preference, but did have enough cross-country to justify taping my ankles. (Not sure why the map showed some artificial/imaginary fences in the school, as these in fact reduced route choice significantly.) Anyway, glad I went out for a run rather than staying at work to finish stuff off after a long week - and there were enough juniors helping pack up, that I could just hang around & gossip with Bridget & Liv :)

7 PM

running (Belair) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Surprised at how exhausted I was feeling tonight (this cold's still hanging around) but it was too nice an evening not to run; managed to make it as far as redwoods & return with conversational encouragement from Zara and lots of stops to rest +/- eat blackberries.

7 AM

swimming 33:00 [3] 1.0 km (33:00 / km)

Finally non-spluttery enough to do this.
5 PM

running tempo (Shepherds Hill) 33:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Quick trot around the park because tonight's deadline was a pharmacists' dinner meeting.

Tuesday Feb 19, 2019 #

6 PM

running hills (Morialta) 47:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Nice evening for an ascent of Deep View then around to the top of First Falls and back down, encountering the others who had gone up via Pretty Corner on the south side instead. Deadline was OSA council meeting, at which there was wine and cheese (apparently our delayed Christmas party)!

Note

Wow, accommodation in downtown San Francisco is expensive! Even if some of the hostels do accept payment in Bitcoin...

orienteering race (Lockwood Range) 57:23 [3] 6.0 km (9:34 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov8 ORoc 280

I'd decided on Friday to drop down to the 6km course, but there was no way I was going to miss the famed/fabled Lockwood Granite. This was such a fun race - head south 2km through lovely open spur-gully (everyone went past me on the first erosion gully crossing and up the big hill, but I caught up with some of them again at the end of the leg) to a tiny patch of granite on the southern spur, where we had a map flip to the 1:2 000 section, then 3 6-800m butterfly loops through a pivot control with people going all over the place, then back to 1:10 000 for the northward journey home. At the end of the butterflies I could see Jenny Bourne's yellow Sprint Into Spring jersey ahead of me, and I chased it down over the next 3 controls, but then she took a better (i.e. track) route than me through the green regrowth and then by the time I'd managed to get across the big erosion Tony and Adrian had come past me and then my legs absolutely died in the last couple of controls and so they finished 2+ min ahead of me.

But hey, at least I got around pretty cleanly, and it was so much fun, thanks to Jim's one-man-band organisation (and Neil's mapping)! If I hadn't been sick all week, I think I'd have managed the 10km ok (had been looking forward to that) but even so, this is what orienteering's all about! Well not quite, it also involves administrative stuff like subsequently spending 4 hours in an OA Board Workshop, but I had procured an amazing burger from a street market just beforehand so this kept me quiet for a bit :)

7 AM

running 44:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Flew into Melb last night (plane ended up doing 2 laps of Bendigo in a holding pattern so I got a good look at the school which is tonight's sprint venue, but couldn't see Lockwood Range). 'Twas a nice morning for a run down Darebin Creek bushland trail to the Yarra, and even coming back to Fairfield past the Chandler Highway roadworks wasn't too bad. Legs felt good for first 20 min then I kept having to consciously extend my stride to avoid jarring the hamstring, which doesn't like it when I cough.
6 PM

orienteering race (BSE College sprint) 24:21 [3] 3.3 km (7:23 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Fun little map of a fancy school in Bendigo, mapped at 1:3 000 which was perfect for my aging eyes. Temperature 32 degrees was too much for my ailing lungs and legs, but I persevered, and enjoyed myself despite wanting to sit down and rest at every control. Did try a bit harder through the middle section when the heavy-breathing stalker running up behind me through the bushes turned out to be Blair :)

8 AM

orienteering (Shepherds Hill) 30:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Inov8 ORoc 280

Since I hadn't had the energy to remove ankle tape last night, decided to go back and do the rest of the sprintervals on my way to work this morning (yes, I do have access to a shower!). It's a worry when I can't even break 10 min/km on Sheps though.

Thursday Feb 14, 2019 #

7 PM

orienteering (Shepherds Hill) 30:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Inov8 ORoc 280

Thought I'd go round some sprintervals from a couple of years ago but called it quits after coughing up a lung (people at work are starting to ask about my smoking habit) and continually encountering a group of cub scouts milling around in the creek valley. I'm a Good Person, but they and their leaders have no way of knowing this...they did know that I was orienteering though :)

Note
(sick)

Unfortunately sounding worse doesn't yet mean feeling better. Came home from work and slumped on the couch watching Married At First Sight (!)
My hairdresser had originally been accepted to go on MAFS but she got cold feet because she found out she'd been matched with someone the complete opposite of what she'd asked for (and also she wasn't keen on being paid only $120/day to be on the show). One of the women's tabloids considered this defection enough justification to publish a story about Runaway Brides.

Tuesday Feb 12, 2019 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 34:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Didn't really feel like driving across to Morialta after work, much less running, but then I saw Zara riding her bike up Shepherds Hill Rd and felt a bit ashamed. Managed to accompany Bridget on her recovery jog to First Falls (and hopefully didn't breathe on her).

Monday Feb 11, 2019 #

Note
(sick)

Dry cough Sat am became chesty cough Sun am and in the afternoon I fell in a heap with aches & fever - made it through work on Mon because I had to, but would be keen to hunt down the index case for this cold because I have no idea who breathed on me and it's weird that it didn't start with a sore throat.

Sunday Feb 10, 2019 #

8 AM

running long (Bridgewater) 1:32:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Lovely cool cloudy morning for the Tanahmerah-Gum Flat loop with a decent group: Toby, Ben, Dante, Remi, B&S, Liv, Zara/Callum, Steve. Of course I was off the back of the pack, but not by *too* much although it was always a relief to see Simon's red t-shirt coming back towards me and know that a regrouping road junction wasn't too far ahead! Tried to drop shoulders & elbows and look ahead more, which allowed me to identify some juicy roadside blackberries that I could return to pick afterwards :)

Saturday Feb 9, 2019 #

9 AM

running (Blackwood Forest) 46:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 ORoc 280

Renmark's red dust was washed off my O shoes by 3 terrain laps of Blackwood Forest, plus warmup/down, on a lovely rainy (!) morning. Fallen logs were a bit slippery and I was very cautious in deference to knees & hamstring, which held up ok - and will hopefully have benefited from a Killer Massage afterwards.

7 AM

swimming 32:00 [3] 1.0 km (32:00 / km)

Hungry this morning. So too was the dog, who upon my return demonstrated his inheritance of skills from his ancestors who had herded cattle over the Welsh hills, by shepherding me towards the pantry where his breakfast is kept!
7 PM

orienteering race (Lochiel Park SSS) 14:54 [3] 2.0 km (7:27 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Left work late :( so by the time I got to the event, Sarah & Simon & Bridget had set everything up already! Decided to run around the short course since I hadn't done that when setting, and it was quite fun, plus I was able to focus on running harder because I already knew where I was going. Legs actually didn't hurt, but I can tell that I've developed a horribly hunchbacked shuffling style, as evidenced by the photo of Quasimodo crossing the uni footbridge last week.

6 PM

running (Belair) 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Trainline-steps loop with Zara, at casual chatting pace. I'm sure this run used to take well under an hour, and I can't blame just the dilapidation of the stair descent from the old national park station. Mind you, I didn't realise just how tired I was with the new job this week until I slept through my alarm today (not having an 8am ward round on Thurs for the first time in 15 months) and woke up at 8:30 - oops. Made it to work by 9:10 and not too many people saw me sneak in nearly half an hour late...how embarrassment!

Wednesday Feb 6, 2019 #

7 PM

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:03:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:14 / km)

Can't believe how much less worse my legs feel after getting rid of the on call phone.

Tuesday Feb 5, 2019 #

6 PM

running (Morialta) 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 19

The group went up to Pretty Corner and dropped down into 3rd Falls from above, admiring the views we don't usually get to see from the opposite direction. Because it was such a nice evening I continued around to & down from Deep View, and by the end hamstring had a fairly strong opinion, but knees were better than on Sunday.

Sunday Feb 3, 2019 #

8 AM

running (Bridgewater) 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

For some reason the decision was made today to do the Bandicoot Trail loop backwards - go figure. Anyway, Tyson & I cut it short before Mylor, partly because my neuroma was being an absolute bastard (that right leg's persistent problems are clearly all neurally interconnected; no idea how I'm going to manage 10km @Bendigo in 2 weeks' time?) The company/conversation was all right though :)

Saturday Feb 2, 2019 #

7 AM

swimming 33:00 [3] 1.0 km (33:00 / km)

Before a very intensive day as supervisor in the dispensary. (Brain) dead now afterwards!

Friday Feb 1, 2019 #

7 PM

orienteering (Adelaide Uni SSS) 28:33 [2] 2.6 km (10:59 / km)
(injured) shoes: Asics Nimbus 21

Hopalong Jennidy staggered painfully around Liv's course, dreaming of being able to actually run. Nothing worked tonight, not all the stretching and foam rollering I've been doing, nor the new shoes, nor the magic of having a map in my hands nor the fun of being able to actually take the secret passageway as a route choice. Even Sandra beat me :(

Sunset view over the river from the uni footbridge when control collecting was nice though, and among the lovers' padlocks I noticed one from "Richard & Nicole" - have the Fizzyreds been here?
