Yoga 50:00 [1]

Slow (movements) but definitely intense class. Was hoping I’d loosen up hip muscles (caught myself from falling a couple times yesterday) but not enough...more work to do there.

Hawk Mtn Brown

Sunday’s map
10 AM

Orienteering race 58:31 intensity: (9 @0) + (19 @1) + (2:25 @2) + (33:14 @3) + (22:06 @4) + (18 @5) *** 4.14 km (14:09 / km) +80m 12:54 / km

Brown course at Hawk Mtn Scout Reservation in Schuylkill Haven, PA, debut of the full map (last Oct DVOA held a sprint in the campground area, but we missed it). Temperature was in the upper 30s with very light drizzle most of the time.

3.6 km, 95 m nominal, on a 1:7500 / 5m interval map

The Brown course didn’t have to climb the mountain but stayed more or less within a 10 interval area above and below the main west-east trail through the reservation. If it had not been rainy (and about 10 degrees warmer) I think I would have attempted the Green course which was about 5.5 km.

Company for the first few controls, though those runners were on the Green course. Lena K was within sight until almost to 5, and Bob R stopped at 2 and seemed confused so I never saw him again (until he finished, long after I was done my course). Lena later said she took a different route leaving 5 because we seemed to be going the same speed. Her course then diverged anyway.

No problem with the navigation today!

Fun to see all the diehards who showed up, including COC/QOC Campbells (in the area on the way to West Point...), and talk to some different folks.

I was second on the course when we left, just a couple minutes back of first (I don’t remember who!).

Green course at Oregon Ridge (no Brown offered); 5.3km, 180m nominal
Temp was almost 80 when we arrived and warmer by the time we were ready to head out; 85 when we left after 3 pm

I’d been hoping to come back to this park sometime during the day ever since we did a night O champs here a few years ago. Since then they’ve logged a good chunk of the map, and while it’s mostly passable this time of year it’ll be horrid later in the summer when all the wineberry vines cover the ground under the opened up canopy.

But lots of places were very nice wide open woods. I couldn’t move very quickly, mostly because I’m not acclimated to summer temps yet. :-)

Manual punching. It’s been a while....

Good most of the way to 1 despite a) missing a trail junction and scratching my head until Glen (who started two minutes back) pointed it out to me and b) overshooting it just a bit at the end.

Mostly straight to 2; contoured the reentrant then straight to 3. Found 4 with no problem either, though once I got there I had to search a bit for the punch string hiding behind the bag.

Leg to 5 was my worst, reading the reentrants poorly and not glancing at my compass often enough, so I ended up much farther down the main trail than intended. Corrected okay from there and got to the right spur, but didn’t see a dot knoll down the hill and wasn’t sure of the fenced yards, so went up the spur until I was caught by the multiple trails which looked more like ditches, and went back. Saw Tom N headed the other way so thought he was coming from it. As I was headed to 6, though, I saw him coming back...he’d missed it and gone even farther up the spur than me.

Really feeling the heat on the way to 6 and just slogged along. A bit left on the spur but I found the depression okay. Coming out I got a bit too far right and misread a trail junction...crossed through some logged area with thicker wineberry undergrowth and learned to step on it because both ends were connected to the ground! Came out at a trail junction that wasn’t what I expected, but luckily for me there was an aerial map with trails and a “you are here” dot. :-) Did fine from there and could even see the bag from a distance.

Woods a bit thicker to 8 but found it okay, then I just needed to get through a rooty section of trail before the finish. SO tired (and red faced, but not from embarrassment) at the end. I wasn’t last.

I’ll post splits the old fashioned way because we didn’t use epunch.

At South Mountain Preserve from the Alpine Street trailhead in Emmaus. Low 60s made for great conditions. Long sleeve Techwick but rolled sleeves up shortly after starting; short sleeve would have been fine.

Saw a cave in rocky hillside I hadn't noticed befor, and took green trail toward Ithaca Park, which I hadn't been on before. Lots of neat depressions and pits that way (area was mined, I think, a while ago).

Orange-Green-Orange-Red trail back to parking.

Little Lehigh Parkway N from parking lot off 15th. First km was paved path, and some near the end was too.

Forgot to put on my chest strap so no zones

Low 50s and partly sunny. Started sweating around 22 minutes and realized I didn't have a headband to keep it out of my eyes.....

Yoga (Vinyasa) 40:00 [1]

Introductory session of a new yoga class in the community. A bit hard on my shoulder with extra down dogs and planks, but I think it'll be doable.
