Flying Pig Long at Yellowwood SP near Bloomington, IN. 3.8 km and 200m nominal climb. A very nice day with lots of sun and temps in the 60s.

Navigation good...except for one control (#2) which was a comedy of errors. I was distracted leaving the first control by Walt Lyons who headed down a trail I thought was correct, until it didn't look right and I realized we were headed 90 degrees off course. I had passed him, so when I turned around I mentioned we were headed in the wrong direction. He managed to get the rest of the navigation to 2 right after that, and finished 10 minutes ahead of me. Once I got in the valley I headed up the wrong creek bed and ended up much closer to 5, though I never saw it until later. Decided to head west to the trail west of #2 (still thinking I was close)...and ended up on the next trail north which drops into a valley with a steep bank on the opposite side. That's when I finally knew where I was, and I was able to get back to 2 okay.

Just a slog from there, especially on the uphills. I messed up the fine negation between 8 and 9 and added some distance but knew where I was. I'll try to do better at the sprints tomorrow. Ended up 7th of 7 in F60.

Night O champs Brown. Only F60. 4.3 km, 65m climb. Course by Bob Minto. About 42F but thankfully the wind stopped around 9 pm; my start was 9:27.

Watch got turned off for about 6 minutes so some track may be missing too. I changed time to match my printout.

Turned down the wrong road on the way to 2 so lost time there. Had to relocate from road NW of 8. Encountered a control that wasn't mine and checked its code on way to 11.

Decent nav otherwise with roads or trails nearby. F60 Champ by default.

Walk/Jog 49:55 [3] 3.17 mi (15:45 / mi) +12m 15:34 / mi

Mostly walking, but jogged a bit now and then after passing the covered bridge (where I started) on the other side of the Little Lehigh.

Very nice day, partly sunny and about 61F. Forsythia are starting to bloom and there were some little yellow flowers that weren't dandelions in bloom along the creek.

Note

Near the covered bridge (our start-stop point), we saw a bike rider with a small dog in a backpack. The dog (a miniature poodle or some such) wore a pair of goggles to protect its eyes. When it was let out of the backpack it immediately tried to get them off, apparently only tolerating them for the bike ride. Cute

Brown course at DVOA-Warwick Co Park. 3.7 km, 70m climb nominal. Gorgeous weather; sunny and low to mid 50s with a bit of breeze; closer to 60 by the time we left the park.

The park includes the north-facing slope of a hill (with plenty of rocks and charcoal platforms) plus flatter areas in the floodplain of the creek that flows through it. If you paid attention to your bearing there wasn't much of a problem navigating (at least on my course). 5 of the controls were within the open field areas or just adjacent, so not too challenging, but this map looks like it's tough to set courses on. Anyway, I had fun.

We spent time afterward catching up with various DVOA people. :-)
