Walking warm up/down 21:35 [2] 1.42 km (15:15 / km) +115m 10:51 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

To start. Not a bad climb. Looking at the warmup map but I didn't check any controls. Tested out my glasses (old pair of reading glasses on a croakie, worn down my nose. Would have been better if they were shaped differently but they worked for today. Much better result than if I had only had my magnifier.

NAOC Middle Champs, Brown Y. 2.4 km. 60m climb nominal

Trail to 1. A bit tentative to 2 as I got "into" the woods and mapping (I didn't go into the woods on the warmup). Hard to see the skinny form line above the "pond," even with magnifier and reading glasses but it indicated where the depression was. Then straight along hills and ponds to rocky hill with a barely visible dot knoll on top.

To 4 I popped out to the trail missing the barbed wire fence (seen on the way into 2) and skirted the vertical green and marsh. Saw two rootstocks in the reentrant but turned the correct way and found the bag on the rootstock to my left after crossing the trail.

To 5, hmmmm...need to be careful. Out to large trail junction and had the choice of climbing right away or heading west down the larger trail for a short bit and then find the trail heading up the hill, which I did. I never noticed the first angled junction but did see the 2nd. Just needed to locate the third which I did (Kean passed me along the trail here and turned at the right time). Didn't see the side trail near his bend, but did see a bunch of people going in to the control (136). Short easy leg to 6, again with people. I would have been a bit slower without them but I was headed the right way.

To 7, I cut out northwest to the big trail but think a better approach would have been to head south, run to the end of the blue area (marsh?), and head down the reentrant. Coming from the larger trail it was pretty junky and I had trouble seeing the cliff and the flag because there was a downed tree whose top branches overhung it somewhat.

Followed the right trails to 8 but looped around it from the north/right when the other side of the little spur would have been better/faster. Great to 9 but then misread symbols in the yellow looking for 10 and checked out 166 (thicket) first. Running down the trail to finish was a lot of fun. :-) As I approached the finish there was a lot of cheering but from a Canadian contingent so I figured there was a very fast male Canadian behind me and I was soon passed. I did hear my name being cheered on, and maprunner later told me it was her, so thanks, Mary. ;-)

Finished 3rd NA (all US), well behind Natalia D. and four minutes behind Sandy. A clean run would have put me a bit closer to Sandy but still behind, I'm sure.

I'd been looking forward to Glen's course here all year and wasn't disappointed (in the course)...best Middle course to use this terrain. :-)
I'm taking tomorrow off but plan to run the campus sprint, just because I like campus sprints. Congrats to Natalia and Sandy!

After others were assigned their handicaps by Peter for the nightO, he asked how many skips I wanted; I said 13. ;-) I lost count and only skipped 11.

[Added: Apparently it had rained the night before but I neglected to post weather conditions in my log. I did remember a muddy course at one of these. :-) ]

The part from finish to start because I forgot to start my watch at the parking lot. Actual was about 1.5 km.

Stopped to drop off a bag with flip flops so I could go inside the building with results ("no spikes!" they said yesterday). Turns out they put cardboard down on the floor so that we could go inside with spikes. Oh well. Then I talked to someone about next weekend. Still made it to start with plenty of time. Thanks to Peter, Gail, and Jim Henderson for holding down the fort at the starts both days.

Brown X day 2 Classic Champs, 3.6 km, 120m climb nominal

Not my day. Did the first two controls just fine, went up and over to 3 but then looked too low, and caught up to several other people and let myself get distracted going to 4. Plus without vision correction (astigmatism) the magnifier isn't quite enough to make black or very tiny details clear so I wasn't sure what was up and what was down, especially since I misread the clue as spur instead of reentrant. Eventually bailed out to the nearby trail and corrected; several minutes lost. Fine to 5 especially with a train of folks going in and then turning >90 degrees left en masse.

My first mistake to 6 was to try to go straight and check off boulders at the edge of green (mountain laurel) while pace counting. I don't pace count often, and it didn't work here especially after I let myself be distracted (again!) by other runners. Attempted to figure out what was going on but I think kept drifting downhill. After wandering for too much time I decided I'd better bail out to the big trail to the west of 6. It took forever and when I finally *did* hit a trail, it was the trail that crossed the line between 6 and 7. Trudged up the hill and when I got close to the bare rock along the trail WSW of the control, I attacked but missed and turned the wrong way. Nice little circle here until I tried again a bit higher up and found it. Ugh.

I managed okay on the rest though again it was really hard to interpret the detail in the circle for 7...I could see the spur with cliffs just fine but the clue said reentrant so I assumed correctly it was a very small one. Better to 8, and 9, a bit off to 10 where I checked another boulder up-stream (I guess it's the one mapped with the blob of green around it which I didn't notice at the time).

Time for a visit to the eye doctor to see what I can get to help me read the map.

Finished fourth US overall today, I think, and fourth for the weekend. Janet Findlay had a fairly large error yesterday but a good run today and finished third behind Sandy and Mary Jo. Marion Owen was first both days.

Beautiful woods; I love Pound Ridge and hope it's used again fairly soon. Thanks to Geof Connor for all his work with the park people to get access to this area again after a period of orienteering drought.

Brown X course, which we shared with the younger men; nominally 3.9 km 130m climb

First 5 (to me) were navigationally easy, maybe too much so for Brown? [Though I did get off line a bit to 1 and took a wider route than maybe necessary to 5.]

Maybe not the cleanest route to 6 (went through more barberry than I probably needed to and probably could have shot straight across the marsh), but then messed up in the circle when I didn't see the flag on the boulder/rock where I expected it to be, then didn't look closely at the control description until after checking other rocky bits close by. I eventually returned to that rocky area, thinking it had to be there, and found the flag tucked down in and partly hidden by an unmapped tree. I heard from others that if you approached it from above the flag was readily visible but from other approaches it was definitely hidden from view. I lost a few minutes there but not as much as some.

On 8 I think the choices were to run on a big trail that took you somewhat wide around a hill, and necessitated a climb at the end, or climb a couple of contours or less to a smaller, more direct trail through the hashed green which came out directly across from the mowed trail through the tall grass (rough open). I chose the second option which was slightly more direct.

Gorgeous weather, low 70s and sunny. Hope it hangs around for tomorrow morning.

Note

It was really nice to stop and chat and catch up with others we hadn't seen for awhile. More to come next weekend, I'm sure.

It took a bit longer than we expected to check everyone in for the AGM. Then we waited while the meeting started and then votes were cast for the BOD. When it came time to count them, Kissy and J-J provided assistance and backup; that took a large part of an hour). Then we reported back to the AGM on the results of the counting, where there was a tie for fourth place. The options were to have another ballot as tie breaker (4th place won a 3-year term and 5th got two years) but the two involved candidates amicably resolved the situation without a revote.

I suspect they've been reported elsewhere already and I'll probably be posting something on OUSA soon, but top 5 (in number of votes) were:

Boris
Alex
Barb
tie--Pat M and Ian S

Thanks to J-J and Kris for helping with the vote count (and crowd control on checkin). Thanks also to Donna for her 5 years as OUSA secretary; she's been a pleasure to work with. Special thanks to Peter Goodwin as president who took a job not everyone wants to do and did his best at it. Best of luck on your remaining two years on the board.

It'll be different but good to work with Kris (new OUSA prez) and Barb (sec'y) in the upcoming years.
