City of Rocks near Almo, Idaho - Basin overlook

...with stops to take photos of cactus roses. :-) (photos to come)

I hope soon I'll remember which buttons to push on this watch, and when to push them. Have a bit of the drive out the road included again, so don't trust the time/distance....

Hiking 14:35 [1] 0.2 mi (1:12:53 / mi) +20m 55:37 / mi

To check out Window Arch at City of Rocks

Hiking 1:22:18 [1] 2.0 mi (41:09 / mi) +98m 35:43 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Around Bath Rock to check out the ascent trail to the "bathtub" on top -- good for young legs, perhaps, but not for us. I forgot to start my watch until we were at the base of the so-called Boy Scout trail up to the top.

Then to the Creekside Trail from Bath Rock parking lot to the Parking Lot Rock parking lot. City of Rocks apparently attracts a lot of rock climbers as there are numerous granite pillars scattered around the park of varying difficulties. We saw some folks heading back to the parking lot from the Anteater Rock (which looks more to me like a giant anthill; maybe it looks more like an anteater from the side?) near Parking Lot Rock.

Hot, but a large cloud passed over as we started out on the Creekside Trail, and, because of the creek, there was vegetation to make at least part of the walk shady. Highs in the 90s.

Walking 2:40:51 [1] 3.33 km (48:17 / km) +15m 47:14 / km
slept:6.5 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

At Craters of the Moon National Park near Arco, Idaho. Our first National Park visit as seniors (I got a National Parks Pass). We went to the cave area and wanted to go to Boy Scout Cave and Beauty Cave, but that area was closed because they were re-tarring the paved walkway over the lava. We had seen/been in Indian Cave before, but that was our only choice in this area. We later went to Buffalo Cave in another area of the park.

Had a great time watching the bluebirds and swallows diving around the cave and collapsed opening areas and in some cases, feeding young birds on their nests. We didn't see any young'uns, but saw where the parents swooped in to feed them. Also saw as many as 6 rock doves near the top of one of the lava tube roof collapses. We explored the typical way first (south?) and then went back down the staircase to look at the other two cave extensions (one with a collapsed roof/pile of boulders at the end and the other without).

Note: at the south end we couldn't go east and west as the track shows (so the distance is pretty bogus); watch was confused when I was underground. At the north end, the last bit looping around the collapsed area was on top, to look for a bird I had seen from below.

No ice seen, but some parts of the caves were a refreshing break from the 93-98F heat. A slight breeze aboveground made it bearable.

Walking 1:16:00 [1] 2.07 km (36:43 / km) +24m 34:42 / km
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

At Craters of the Moon National Park, hiking to and exploring Buffalo Cave (near Broken Top and Big Crater cinder cones), and taking pictures of the wildflowers that have made their home on the lava fields. Amazing place.

Track including driving away from the parking area until I realized my watch was still on. I've adjusted the time and distance (but track still shows us driving away...).

Walking warm up/down (to start) 8:41 [2] 0.44 km (19:55 / km) +15m 17:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

To start, along a path, until you get to a steep hill near the end. Youch.

Orienteering race (middle) 1:01:26 [4] ***** 3.42 km (17:58 / km) +96m 15:45 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Detailed Gold Rush Hills map terrain was fantastic for the Middle. I would have liked fewer steep-steep hill climbs, but finished okay, with only a few bobbles. SL 2.6 km 150m climb advertised. 80s by the time we started, I think.

A decent run for a woods middle, with a few bobbles including <1min at #2, searching for the right reentrant for #6, and a slightly bigger error at 13. Finished about 5-6 minutes behind Diana but ahead of Debbie (and Julie). Fun (but hot... they had plenty of Vitalyte and refreshments, and ice water buckets with sponges which were very welcome today and yesterday).
