Orienteering race (score O) 33:21 [4] ** 3.3 km (10:06 / km) +1m 10:05 / km
spiked:11/15c slept:7.0 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Suncoast Orienteering Score O as Caspersen Beach Park in Venice FL (event included the Suncoast JROTC Champs; teams of 3 split up the score O controls; civilians could do solo O after all teams were done; they later did a relay which was hard for some less-experienced teams) Gord Hunter organized and designed courses, helped by local JROTC teams who also ran administration.

1:5000 map; few contours. Interesting distribution of controls. Had a few booboos--one where I overran a control and was then confused; another where I misinterpreted how a boardwalk was mapped and ended up crawling underneath it. Interesting area; a lot of trail running (so it seemed more sprint-like than anything) with some open fields and some "wooded" areas plus a bit on the beach where beachcombers sat, played, and scoured the water's edge for shark's teeth. Fun to get some regular O in at this time of year and forget the snow piling up at home.

Orienteering (existence chk) 9:14 [3] ** 0.97 km (9:33 / km) +2m 9:28 / km
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Checked 9 of 24 relay controls before Gord sent the JROTC teams out...all were present and accounted for.

Then we helped the folks setting up the maps near the start for the 2nd and 3rd relay runners.

A few kids on novice teams (middle school) hadn't done a point-to-point course before and hadn't been advised on the format, I guess, because we got some strange questions while spectating during the race.

Helped with taking down the map strings afterwards.

Lots of enthusiasm among the cadets, it seemed, and well organized by the coaches.

We walked along the beach a bit afterwards and watched folks scooping sand and searching for shark's teeth.

Fieldchecking.

Watch recorded 7.53 km and 2:45 hours before the battery died. Getting near the end of its life. :(

I like my Forerunner 205. Now I'll have to figure out what to replace it with, or how to get a new battery.

Walk/Jog (indoor track) 37:47 intensity: (5:30 @1) + (22:48 @2) + (9:29 @3) 2.65 mi (14:15 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Walking at the Y; Pilates class canceled due to school delay policy at the Y (for whatever reason). Did a 1/3 mile warmup before walking faster, then a mile. Then jogged, attempting to go a full mile but got a knee pain (in a new place!) at 11.5 laps so switched back to walking. 1/3 mile cool down.

Adductors, pulldowns (12), and leg presses, plus stretching.

Shoveling (strength) 5:00 [1]

Through about 6-8" of light fluffy stuff from house to road, where I then walked in the 1-2" there to the mailbox, and back, about 0.3 miles round trip. Worth it because the ONA was there. :-)

If the snow stops before it gets dark I might go out again to shovel by the mailboxes but figured it wasn't worth it if we're going to get another 4-6" as predicted. Otherwise it can wait until tomorrow (unless some other kind soul does it, but that's rare). There are 6 households with boxes at the corner....

The mail carrier was able to drive through what was there today in her pickup.

Shoveling (strength) 10:00 [2]

Some kind soul (or plow operator; maybe from the town whose road intersects the state road at the corner) moved much of the snow from in front of the mailboxes, leaving less for me to clean up than I expected.

Glen figures there was a foot of snow when he ran the snow thrower. And he found the newspaper that we didn't see this morning, which was in pretty good shape considering it went through the thrower chute. There were tears mostly in the plastic bag it was in but not really in the paper. I can read that front section online anyway, and still have the paper version for the puzzles.

Walking 36:20 intensity: (5:45 @1) + (30:35 @3) 2.33 mi (15:36 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

After lunch at Panera with G, S, and Owen before they headed home, we washed the salt off the car, got a few things at the store (figuring we won't get out tomorrow), then sat at Starbucks for a bit to let lunch settle before heading to the Y. I got a couple miles in on the track; a bit slower than after Pilates both because I wasn't as warmed up and I had just a touch of indigestion.

Pulldowns, adductors, and leg presses after.

Now watching the superb owl mostly for the commercials. :-)
