Length and climb from Glen's data.
CNYO Rogaine, 6-hour division. We debated what category to register for, but it didn't matter because we ended up first overall. :-) 9 teams started, but one dropped out because of injury. My feet were holding me back quite a bit, between adjusting my stride so as not to strain the back of my left foot to having sore toes and heels for most of the race. When we found out we had the most points, I said "How'd we do THAT?"
Started to the south. Route was 43-(63-miss)-22-63-66-77-52-55-54-46-69-23-53-done. 570 points (scoring was 10x1st digit of the code); next closest team had 530 (corrected).
Stream of people to the first control, then missed on the angle to the steep-sided stream at 63, ending up rather north of the correct bend. We decided to go for 22, 450m away, and come back for 63, which we found on the second try. S to the road/trail jct, then picked up the trail contouring around the hills. While a steady climb, the trails and woods to 66 were great and led us right to the saddle. The side-hills were starting to get to me by this point. We got 77-52-55 without much trouble, then missed a bit to the right to 54 (trying to come off the wiggle in the FLT, but the reentrants and spurs there were so broad...), not much time lost. Instead of a straight shot to 46, which would have been "hit the reentrant end-on," we returned to the FLT to attack off another trail bend and were surprised by all the other unmapped streams. More unmapped streams on the way out, so we were happy when we reached the road. No trouble with 69-23-53, though we hit some thorns on the way down to 53, one of which is still embedded in my leg. But thorns meant berries, and we snacked on some. Final slog in from 53 wasn't too bad, just slow, but we had plenty of time left.
Glen was having a bad morning, having strained his map-carrying arm, spilled coffee on his fingers, then got stung on his ring finger (other hand), and one other thing I'm not remembering, all before we headed out! We had ice, so the swelling from the sting was down by the time we started.
Still warm when we departed at 8:00 pm; the 12- and 24-hour folks would probably have wanted it a bit cooler overnight. Hope my body's repaired by the time I want to do this again.
