Walking 26:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

To the PO to mail a birthday card. Cold wind on the way back cut through my scarf.

Day 5 of an annoying plugged ear. Faulty eustachian tube, a problem I've had before. Don't remember if I had to resort to antibiotics the other times, but so far decongestants aren't having any effect.

Running (dirt) race (trail) 45:36 [4] 5.03 km (9:04 / km) +146m 7:55 / km

Brave the Blizzard, put on by Albany Running Exchange (ARE), was again declared a non-snowshoe race. This is the second year it's been held on the grounds/trails of the Robert C. Parker School in West Sand Lake/Averill Park.

Like last year (when there were just a couple of inches of snow on the ground, with snow falling as we raced), I wore orienteering shoes because of the spikes which provided much more secure footing than the (more comfortable) trail shoes that I own (and use with snowshoes). People with Icebugs used them; some folks used YakTraks or Microspikes.

Start was run across a field, then head down a short hill into the woods. I was well behind most of the pack across the field, but on reaching the patch of snow just past the first drop I was able to pass a couple of timid people. Hills, of course, slowed me down, but I managed to get jogging/running on almost all of the flats and downhills. One steep climb we got to do twice, as this is a double-loop course. As I finished the first loop and crossed the field to get to the snow patch again, I heard them announce the first finisher, at 22:48. Around twice the winner's time is my usual place at road and trail races.

Back and forth with one woman from the 2nd-loop steep climb on in, but she was able to outkick me at the finish to finish one second ahead. Finished 51/58, 4th of the 4 women in 50-59 (19/24 women overall).

We got to run under paper snowflakes hanging from trees (near the top of the steep climb), and climb through a bungee "spiderweb". :-)
