Orienteering race (Classic) 1:02:06 [4] *** 5.42 km (11:27 / km) +142m 10:08 / km
spiked:6/8c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Brown day 1, Plains of Despair, 1:10,000, 5 m
Nominal 4.3 km, 150 m climb, course designer: Neal Barlow

Good run except for a 5+ minute overrun on #3, and checked wrong rocks on the way to 6 (<1 min).

More later, including FR. Gotta go be an OUSA official (delegate check-in) at the AGM. :-) Then games, then dinner.

EDIT: Added FR track. Maybe a third to half the clubs had reps at the AGM, which wasn't all that boring.

Silva Award winner is Valerie Meyer :-)
President's Award winners are Tony Pinkham, Greg Walker, and Ken Walker Sr for their efforts at the Ski O World Cup in Tahoe

Followed by a thundershower which forced the games to end early (didn't try any), and then lasagne dinner. Coffee afterwards at Coal Creek Coffee on Grand, where we ran into Pete Dady and talked til 10:30... gotta get some rest as I have an earlier start tomorrow.

Note

Temp was in the low 70s with quite a steady breeze, especially from the direction of the start! Hard to jog the road to get there. Someone saw some elk from the road; no moose today. :-)

Wide open range land with some sage meadows

70s again. :-) Breezier today, and a bit hazy to the east to start but it looked like it cleared up pretty well.

I took it easy today; started out thinking I'd just do the first 6, but it was 1.5km to the first control and I was just walking. Peter Goodwin and Donna F were just walking too and said they were going to do the last 6 in a loop, so I joined them. ;-) Nice day for a walk; I needed the physical break too.

LinearIce was first woman today in about 51 minutes, with Sue K a few minutes behind her. Nice running, ladies! Straight line distance for the full course was 6.1 km.

Laramie Daze 3 - One Cowboy Relay, C-A-B-D-Z
Gates of AMT Hell map, 5.9 km straight line

Wow - exciting finish, at least for the women. :-) (I wasn't there for the men's finish.) As I punched the penultimate control down a hill I saw a red Cascade O shirt uphill from me approaching it, likely Eileen B. So I kept pushing to the last control and from there in (both uphill legs) toward the finish, with people cheering. Ten feet from the stick marking the finish line I caught the toe of my shoe and got off balance but did not fall, and Eileen and I crossed the line in a tie -- first women to finish, even.

Relay consisted of 4 forked loops to spread everyone out, and a final common loop that everyone did last. Whoever you were racing with in the last loop determined how you were going to finish.

I messed up the first control visiting two others before I found the correct one, losing several minutes I think, and then bobbled the approach on another first control somewhere (I don't remember which leg), only about 1/2 minute error.

Afterwards Glen and I did the Trail-O model that Peter Goodwin set up as a demo. It only rained/sprinkled a little bit and stopped again before we left.

Walking 3:00 [0]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

We went to the Ames monument on the way to Veedauwoo after orienteering, and took a few pictures. At Veedauwoo, we left the car and thought we wouldn't need a camera, but around the first bend we saw a cow moose in the aspen/willows along the trail! Hustled back for the cameras (both of us had one along), and took some of her; continued down the trail and found her buddy a bull moose!! Got some shots of him too before he snorted us away (and fake-charged, but wasn't aggressive).

Will update and post photos after dinner -- we're hungry!

Okay, back from dinner...

Click on this photo for more moosiness, and other photos I've posted. We walked around the University of Wyoming a bit looking for some outdoor sculptures advertised on the UW Art Museum's website, but only found a few.

Laramie Daze 2, Middle Crow's Toe. 1:15,000/5m

A bit of follow-the-leader here, as there wasn't a *whole* lot of route choice except 9-10 (left or right of the big rocky Bennett Hill). Had Peter Goodwin and Donna Fluegel within sight practically the whole way. Managed to beat Olga K today; Eileen Breseman (who only walked yesterday) was first woman today (I was second); but that may change as more folks show up every day.

Looking forward to the motala tomorrow, which was a lot of fun last year (except for the last-leg slog). Then maybe a day off before the A-meet?

Laramie Daze - day 1, 5.7 km course
Moose Outlet 1:10,000, 5m

A warm day in Laramie, even at 8600'. Sunny (a few clouds came by after most of us had finished to help keep things quite comfortable), and mid 70s at the mass start of Daze 1. No moose or any other wildlife (besides grasshoppers) seen. Missed just a bit on 7 and 8 and had to climb spurs on both, but had people around too (usually Peter Goodwin, Donna Fluegel, Dick Neuburger, and Olga Kraght) at just about every control (some of which I saw from a distance -- 3, 4, 9, 10). Gotta get used to this elevation, though! There were 51 names on the results list when we left; I guess people will trickle in throughout the week.

Map is below comments (click to enlarge).

Chatted with folks from COC and CROC as we had our sandwiches before heading back to the motel.

On Happy Jack Road, between the roads for Tie City and Happy Jack campgrounds, there was a pickup truck fire; we saw the heavy smoke ("that's not good") but the fire dept. was already on the scene. We just had to wait a bit before they'd let us go through. Driver okay; apparently he noticed smoke coming from the pickup bed (don't know what it was) and lost control (per the official who came over to talk to us). The front of the vehicle was burned more than the rear when we went by. Glad no one was hurt.
