We had just over 5" of rain when we got home after vacation (most of it from Irene; I think there was another storm a few days before). Last night we had a thunderstorm around 3 am (lots of flashing all around, some thunder) which dropped another 0.9". Wonder how long the grass will be when we finally get it cut? ;-)
Back to reality finally, after a visit to see Glen's mom, and a stop to see the kids; then an orienteering day (which we tend to stretch out--had pizza sumption at a new place on the way home yesterday). Time to plan meals and do weekly shopping and cleaning...
Glen's repairing/replacing the floodlight over the garage that looks to have been damaged somehow.

My route on the red course Sessions Woods yesterday.
The error at 19 was my fault for not crossing that contour line. #3, on the other hand...
The reason my split was "slow" (according to AP) to #5 was that I climbed the spur NE of it, thinking the boulder would be at the top of the reentrant, but I had to go back down off the spur. Not a big climb, to be sure, but climbs affect my speed.

Red course at Sessions Woods (WCOC); weather: partly sunny and very humid, temps in mid to upper 70s. Originally thought I'd do Green but decided I need more time on my feet (and more controls to find doesn't hurt, either).
I was sticky with sweat before I ever got to number 1 - ick. Drank all the liquid I was carrying (24 oz) and a cup at the water stop (boulder near the road, #44).
Didn't have trouble with the navigation, except on #19 which didn't show up due east of the south end of the pond so I explored a bit to the north along the ridge before heading back south. I probably lost 5 minutes (edited from 3 minutes) or so here. At previous events I've been approaching this site (cute little depression in a reentrant) from the north and haven't had trouble finding it. This, and a bit of uncertainty near 3, lead me to believe the map is a bit skewed in these areas because I was trying to do the short legs on compass and had to adjust. Or it's just me.
Travel day -- we're back in the east now and have to re-set our body clocks.
Only a few, mostly small, branches down from the hurricane remnants that passed through here. We had over 5" of rain in the rain gauge; what water was in the basement is gone and the dehumidifier is working overtime. The plants on the deck look great!
Hiked around on trails in the Badlands (SD), but will log (and add FR) later. Door, Notch, Window, and Saddle Pass trails; all relatively short but some had steep climbs (Notch trail had a log ladder--Glen said 76 rungs--the top dozen or so of which were loose, i.e. not on a solid surface). Great views!
EDIT: Glen corrected me on the number of rungs on the ladder -- 56, not 76. Still, an interesting climb, and a bit tricky near the top.
ADDED: The Saddle Pass trail climb included a side trip up a sandstone peak -- tricky climbing in places, and a bit scary at the top so I didn't stay up there long.

Hiked up Saddle Pass trail, up a nearby peak, and then back down. "intensity" is an average. The uphill included several stops to catch my breath.
