Note

For some folks' amusement, here's a clip of my QR from last weekend, showing my first attempt to find 41 where the circle was, and slightly downstream, then bailing out and attempting 70. The first part of the SW trek to 70 off the road corner was across logging roads and crap, including shoe-sucking mud. It was surrounded by indefinite woods that threw me completely for a loop (literally!) until I got my head back on straight and headed farther south to the control. If I'd just headed west to the trail in the first place....

After snagging a control to the north of finish (both 41 and 70 were south) and having over an hour remaining, I decided to try for 41 again, attacking from a different location, just in case I was in the wrong place earlier in the day. I ended up at the same spot, and decided the control was mis-hung...which it was, down the stream another 200 or so meters (south).

Running (dirt) warm up/down 3:00 [2]
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Ran around the field near start at Hop Field parking area at Thacher, probably not really enough but it was still raining a bit. Fortunately the rain stopped while I was out on my course. Registration crew had nice accommodations in the 'warming hut.'

Orienteering race 1:41:32 [4] *** 7.87 km (12:54 / km) +188m 11:31 / km

Red course, set by Bob L. (aka 'mosquito'). Lots of trails so lots of trail running opportunities, but also some off trail legs requiring good compass, which I did well on today (none of the compass legs were more than 300m).

The three I bobbled were actually near trails. :-) on the first one I hadn't run far enough and checked boulders near other streams (including one not on the map)--pace counters would chide me here (#2). The second one I missed (5), I should have aimed off more; I hit a trail (control was a boulder on the other side, pretty trivial) and ran 60m the wrong direction before closeness to the road told me I needed to go back.

Did well on the next several, including one where instead of taking the trail around I headed directly toward a line of cliffs to hit a gap that would take me up to a stone pile above--right on! Okay on next several (9-12) then tried to get smart on a cliff near a trail and approach it through the woods (missed) instead of just taking the darn trail around. Easy run in from there.

Marcy B was there and G and I chatted with her about the REgaine last weekend.

Club meeting after event ended.

UPDATE: Added FR track; 7.872m measured by Forerunner. Climb is that calculated by AP/FR.

Note

A fitful night of sleep (power went out at 3:25 pm yesterday during the T-storm and wasn't restored until 4:07 am). We got almost 2" of rain (and a bit of pea-sized hail) from this storm; 1/2" from Wednesday's (and hail from three different cells, the largest about 1/2" in diameter).

Since the ground was softened up from the rain, I pulled some weeds around the hickory tree above the driveway so I could plant some hostas around it, seeing how they are doing so well on the north side of the garage. We'll see if they're successful in keeping down the weeds, which have always been a problem here since I don't really like pulling them. Some bending and stretching involved, but didn't feel too bad -- just need to stay off the knees. Not too buggy, either, so a great time to do this.

10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Weights and body weight only. Shouldn't have done the side plank.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 40:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Hill interval, level 2, felt fine today. Guess the feet/legs needed a couple more days off.

Fitness equipment (erg) 5:10 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

1000m

Then 2x12 RDL with 18lb bar, and pulldowns (12@62.5, which is getting easier--almost time to add more).

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Sweaty class in Chatham, with fans but no A/C. I snagged a spot near a fan. We skipped stepping today (maybe because we were one too many for the supply of steps?). Lots of new people (at least, new to me).

Need to start eating only salads. I cannot get my weight down!!!

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y using bands. I got there early enough to get one of the few medium-strength bands this time. No lunges and hams were able to survive the bridges we did. It's feeling much less sore today than the past two.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 15:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Was planning to do longer but glute/ham wasn't happy even when I pedaled backwards (which felt better than the alternative). Lower intensity than usual too. Maybe next week.

Fitness equipment (erg) 5:20 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

1000m

And then some RDL, pulldowns, adductors (70lb)

Note

Order of visiting controls on Saturday:
(41)-70-65-(21)-87-69-29-27-58-75-31-41-19

( ) mean misses. I was SO close to 21 but lost confidence where I was and bailed. Went back to search downstream for 41 when I found out I had lots of time left after 31.
9 AM

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Back to Chatham after session break. Left glute/ham still sore from Saturday, so careful with arabesques and stretching.
