Orienteering race 1:39:03 [3] *** 6.58 km (15:03 / km) +270m 12:29 / km
spiked:5/10c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

HVO local meet at Ward Pound Ridge in Cross River, NY

Hamstring/glute nagged throughout the run, but not a major distraction except on downhills. May consider painkillers before A meet courses. Perhaps should have worn Active Ankle too, for some of the steeper downhills where I was being extremely cautious (slippery leaves, too).

Three of my 5 non-spikes were close to being spikes, but I was a bit off line and in two of the three cases checked another similar feature within the circle before going on to the correct feature. The other two were just inattention, mostly, and maybe a bit of distraction, so I have to work on those. Not a lot of people in the woods, so when there weren't distractions I did well.

Biggest mistakes: To 6, misread a trail bend and didn't properly check compass direction and was too far to the right. On 8, I was too far down the hill (trying to ignore the stone walls and read the terrain) and was confused by the Brown course control farther down the western stream (whose feature was actually described as end of stony ground, but the flag was hung along the stream. However, mine was described as stream/stone wall jct, so I should have been looking for the stone wall). Wasn't sure where along the stream I was and looped around a bit to the north before heading back to the control I saw and corrected.

I managed to keep my feet pretty dry in most of the stream crossings, but the last bit across the waterlogged field south of start/finish was unavoidable (and mentioned in the meet notes). I only went in about mid-calf though we saw a few, floundering up to their knees, who took a different route.

Judy Dickinson finished in ~95 minutes; I know I had at least 4 minutes of error just on #8, and a minute or so on #6, plus 30-60 second bobbles on 1, 2, and 3.

Nominal distance: 5.1 km (no climb listed, but from 4-5 there was a good 12-contour climb over the last 1/2 km--not much compared to the red course's almost 20-contour climb in less than 400m to Joe's Hill, though :-) ).

Good to talk to Lyn, Judy D, Judy K, Dave W., etc. again. Down to NJ to visit Greg and Stevie and have dinner at one of their favorite hang outs.

Interesting roadkill notes: On drive down to the event, saw what I think were a small mink and a beaver (at two different places). The first was a weasel-shaped animal with brown fur, probably no more than 9-12" long; the other was rather larger, and had a noticeable flat tail.

slept:8.5 (rest day)

Weight is good. Need to keep it going in the negative direction.

Pound Ridge tomorrow, followed by dinner with the kids. (Okay--watch those pounds!!)

Note

Observed at Starbucks (post-exercise):
Fellow, height-challenged, wearing his jeans hanging half off his backside. Doesn't he realize that makes him look even shorter??
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y with exercises balls (good for hamstring torture) and light weights.

Weight has hit a plateau.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 30:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Moveable-arm arc-trainer (Cybex 750AT)

Set it on program1, weight loss, level 1. Need to set higher level (to get higher resistance, but nowhere does it say what levels=what resistance) next time, but this was a good program. Cadence was fairly high, 135-175 strides/min; heart rate was in the 115-140 range. No pain in either knees or hamstrings but was able to manage a decent aerobic rate considering running isn't good now.

Fitness equipment (erg trainer) 2:48 [1]

Again, the machine stopped on me. I don't know if I'm accidentally hitting a button or if my stroke stutters, or there's an electrical glitch; or the machine just needs service.

Note

Poking around AP, I noticed I'm ranked 12th in discussion posts. I'm not sure what that says about me (besides the fact that I have time to spend on AP, and I don't restrain myself...though there are many times I'll start to write and then not post).

9 AM

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Power outage on Monday canceled the class.

Good workout--started slow and easy but I was taking rest breaks once we got to the strength section (supine 'bench presses' with alternate arms were especially tough). Stepping was great.
1 PM

Walking 39:18 [2] 2.0 mi (19:39 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Walked with Rob to the 1 mile turn-around point and back. We stopped on the bridge over the Kinderhook to see how high the creek had risen and how far it has since dropped (in two days).

There are two full-size tree trunks (as in 1.5' in diameter or larger) across the creek on the upstream side of the bridge (duh), held back by several concrete bridge supports (seen in this picture from a flood a couple of years ago where the water was even higher than on Monday). Should be interesting to see how the creek flows around/under the logs in the summer (and if you can cross it on the logs!) when the flow is way down. And to see how long they stay there. Several years ago, there was a Y-shaped trunk wedged on one of the supports (10-12' of trunk pointing upstream) that stayed there for years.

Walking (treadmill) 8:07 [1] 0.5 mi (16:14 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

To get a bit more distance.
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, no tools. Planks to downface dogs in warmup got to me before she was done; I stopped to stretch shoulder and rest wrists.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) 23:46 [3] 2.0 mi (11:53 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Testing to see what running I can do. Glute/hamstring didn't like any elevation or speed, so kept incline at 0 and didn't push speed. Bummer. Will continue stretching, carefully, including hip flexors.

Heart rate, when I measured it, was 137.

Fitness equipment 7:00 [0]

2:32 / 367m on the erg machine until the display reset on me for some reason. Took it as a sign to quit. ;-)

Also, adductors--12@70lbs, 12@65
Pull downs, 12@62.5

Note

Ex. class canceled due to nasty weather this morning (though I was able to drive to Chatham to see -- then to the grocery store which was my backup plan). Couldn't get through on the information phone line (no answer) so figured I'd venture out to see whether anyone was there. Roads had some snow cover but weren't really slippery; I followed a snowplow back home.

We had so much rain yesterday that the Kinderhook Creek which runs nearby just about to spring flood stage (~6" below the 'Posted' sign which is my flood gauge). This is partly because of the amount of rain and partly because the ground itself is still somewhat frozen and can't accept all the rainfall so it sits on top and runs off. Most of Jan-Feb's snow was washed away yesterday; now there's a new 2-3" on top of slush. And of course, there's also water in the basement.

But this is March, so it shouldn't stick around too long. :-)
