EMPO Scout-O -- helper / instruction

At Tawasentha Town Park from 10 to 12:30, on my feet the whole time, though I didn't move very far. Followed by a delicious bowl of soup from Bountiful Bread, a local soup/sandwich shop (and competition to Panera) near Albany.

The scouts were enthusiastic for the most part. Some girl scouts seemed very young but I hope they got something out of the day besides a bit of exercise (also a good thing). Though not sunny most of the time, at least it wasn't pouring rain like last year. :-) Nice day to be outside.

Walking 29:16 [2] 2.0 mi (14:38 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked to the post office to mail a bill and then to the church/1 mi mark & back home. Too nice a day to go to the Y.

Ankle hurt at first, but not so much after I got started. Still think I'll wear my Active Ankle during the race on Sunday.

Exerc. Class (stepping) 55:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Okay, that does it -- I'm going back to no step classes at the Y. I think my knee can tolerate the 10 min of step, using the shortest one, at the Chatham class, but not 45 minutes of it, even a beginner class. Bleah.

Followed by Fitlinxx machines (4 of the 5 arm machines; the 5th--triceps--was occupied by a woman talking with someone else. If I'd really felt the need to exercise my triceps I would have asked if she was done with the machine, but I felt them working with the shoulder/row machine and decided to take a pass), about 5 minutes of strength work; plus 11 pulldowns at 56.5 lbs.

Note
(rest day)

I was thinking of going to the Y again today to do the Pilates class, but I feel exhausted just thinking about it, so today's a rest day. I felt tired after the weekend's races but went to try the Piyo class yesterday anyway. I'll have to see what the offerings are tomorrow, or just go use the elliptical.

Note

First snow of the season, though it's not supposed to amount to much here (an inch or so if it gets cold enough to stick). The higher elevations might get several inches, though (up to 12 in some places!).

Exerc. Class (yoga/pilates) 55:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

With the Chatham class on break this week, I thought I'd try something new at the Y, a combination yoga/pilates class, they called 'Piyo'. I might have had an easier time with the regular instructor, according to an older woman near me (older than me, that is), but this one was 'tough.' [Couldn't do the kneeling cat-back stretches, or the side planks due to my knee and shoulder issues, but I tried to keep up with everything else.]

Too many downward dogs! This class just confirmed I like pilates better than yoga, so I'll look for the pilates class (Tuesday morning) during break weeks for the Chatham aerobics class.

Orienteering race (brown day 2) 1:03:44 [4] *** 4.1 km (15:33 / km) +165m 12:56 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Brown day 2 at Mt. Tom. Course was all south of Reservation Road, and the weather was just perfect, mid-50's and sunny/clear.

Allmuth P. started 2 minutes behind me, and caught me on the way to 1 (as I bobbled on the way, needlessly checking another hill along the way after noting a flag on it--it was 100 m early). I couldn't shake her until 7, and having her right there with me most of the way probably pushed me to move faster through the woods. Sloppy on 3, correcting from a cliff area W of knoll, about 1:20 lost.

Finally, on 7, knowing Allmuth was on my heels distracted me so much I didn't have a plan and was way left of the line. I overshot, crossing 2 streams apparently that I shouldn't have crossed, but noted on the way that Judy D., also on Brown, had crossed my path right to left. Once I decided I wasn't where I was supposed to be, I looped back in the direction Judy had come from, until things started matching up again. Luckily for me (but not Allmuth, still following -- couldn't she tell we weren't anywhere near the line?), I came up on the correct side of the hill/knoll and punched, while she was on the opposite side and never saw the flag. Time lost, about 5 minutes. Then I headed out to 8. Allmuth was not far behind, until I punched at the boulder. Then she must have realized I'd already been to 7 and she had to go back and find it (finally, I could navigate without being distracted).

No problems with the last few controls, which required contouring across the hillside (but there were trails to work off).

The best thing, even with 8+ minutes of error, was that I had the fastest time on the course today (George ran Green instead of Brown today, or he would been fastest overall, I'm sure). Finished 5th overall for the weekend on the course, 1st F55 (of 5; Mary Jo and Judy ran Green, too).

Very nice course by Jeff S. Thanks to NEOC for a great weekend event!

FR 4.85k, SportTracks 5.17, avg. 5 km.
