Note

Worked up a sweat (and raised my heart rate) trying to remove some stray plants from where they aren't wanted, 1-2 feet away from the house/foundation -- a wild grape vine, and a hickory tree in a patch of pachysandra (whose top I've cut back before; this time I tried hacking at the root, but can't get it out completely). Not really loggable except as strength work.

Note

To whoever might be interested (rather than revisiting the Yes comment thread on Peggy's log) - I did get a skort last weekend, at LL Bean in Freeport; perhaps not a running skort, but good for apres-O (when it's warm enough! -- hope late Sept. is still warm enough).

Hiking hills 1:13:51 [2] 3.31 mi (22:19 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

...at Schor Conservation Area, Canaan/Red Rock, New York

Exploring a brand-new conservation area in Columbia County. I originally intended to run (the newspaper article said ~ 2 miles of trails) but after looking at the brochure/map posted at the parking lot, I decided a hike was in order so I could spend time looking around as well as hiking (you know how orienteers peer into any brand new forest!).

There were a lot of "white woods" areas, plus a small area of recent white pine growth (I'd map it at least as medium green), but it's only 233 acres, and a lot of that is supposedly "off limits" to allow an undisturbed wildlife travel corridor.

Still, it would make an awesome forest-sprint venue...

Edit: SportTracks reads this as 3.62 mi rather than 3.31.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham. Today's class was dedicated to the music of Eddie Money, who's one of the entertainers at the county fair this weekend ("always over Labor Day weekend"). I showed my ignorance by naming an Eddie Rabbit song as one by Eddie Money. :-) [Eddie Money did "Two Tickets to Paradise," among other hit songs.]

Note

Had a wonderful time in New Brunswick at the COCs. The Hopewell Rocks sprint on the ocean floor was a blast! I hope they do it again sometime; if you missed it this time, don't miss it next time.

When I get more computer time I'll update my log and perhaps add maps/routes...

Orienteering race (course 5) 1:03:29 [4] *** 2.9 km (21:53 / km) +95m 18:49 / km
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Better run technically than Saturday, though still not without errors, but still near the control circle if not within it. While course 6 (W45-54) was the same length, they went into a gnarlier area early on that I was glad to avoid. Probably had another 8 minutes of error on 3 or 4 controls, but finished 1st of 14 with a good 13 minutes ahead of 2nd place.

Parking was near yesterday's, but finish was near parking. The "finish arena" was covered partly in hip-high goldenrod (thankfully earlier runners cleared a path from the go control into finish) but also in short-bush blueberries which were in full fruit! You could just bend over and pick a handful of luscious berries (so tempting during the run in from GO, but I waited until I was done). A very nice touch and a great way to end the weekend.

Note

FR -- 4.5 km
