Help at Scout Merit Badge clinic?

Walking 2:30:00 [1]
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Helped out at Dylan T's scout merit badge clinic. It wasn't well advertised but 10 scouts showed up. We would have had a hard time dealing with more than about 20, I think, because we didn't have many EMPO volunteers (of course, if we'd known more were coming we might have been able to rope a few more folks in). Dylan brought several members of his service fraternity who helped with logistics and cooking, and some of the group shadowing. This was a service project for them too. Dylan is an Eagle scout and merit badge counselor.

I was on my feet more than 2:30, but this is the moving-around part, which includes a little bit of jogging at the end picking up control flags and streamers. Mostly, though, I was walking with the group I was with, who were good kids. Whether we'll see any of them return to our events is questionable, but 10 boys earned their O merit badge today, thanks to Dylan and the other EMPO volunteers. :-)

Fitness equipment warm up/down (elliptical) 5:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y. 5 min / 735 strides on the elliptical to warm up.

Fitness equipment (recumbent bike) 15:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Did 3.39 miles on the recumbent bike, or until my butt started to get numb, while reading a magazine from home.

Walking (treadmill) 15:06 [2] 1.0 mi (15:06 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Didn't want to go back to the elliptical, so I walked on the treadmill.

Strength 6:00 [0]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Just the arm machines in the Fitlinxx circuit.

Note

Unfortunately, I had a sad AOWN on the way to the Y...just over the hill, less than a quarter mile from the house, I ran into what I believe was a female pheasant or partridge. I swerved slightly, away from her, but she came out in front of me anyway. I saw a swirl of feathers in my rear-view mirror.

So when I came upon a turtle in the other lane a 1/4 mile later, I pulled the car over and coaxed him across (towards the pond). I think it was a painted turtle, about 5" long. One down, one up.

Running (dirt) warm up/down 6:19 [3] 0.46 mi (13:44 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hand Hollow West, planning to do hill intervals. I was thinking of going over to the east part of the conservation area, but there were some road workers at the intersection I'd have to run through and I dislike an audience when I'm on the road, so I decided to stay on the west side. Probably a good thing too since the hill I ended up on was steep enough for a first effort.

Running (dirt) intervals 20:00 intensity: (12:00 @2) + (8:00 @5) 1.09 mi (18:21 / mi) +60m 15:40 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Set my FR to have me run uphill for 2:00, then rest/recover/downhill for 3:00, which I walked or jogged very slowly. I probably could have done with a shorter rest period. Did 4 repeats. The last recovery period was used to walk farther up the hill, so the cool down run distance is a little longer than the warm up distance.
Covered about 0.13 mi on each lap, with about 15-18 m of climb in two sections -- the first part steeper and the other part less steep but still uphill.

Running (dirt) warm up/down 6:38 [2] 0.51 mi (13:00 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Downhill jog back to the car.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [0]

Ex. class in Chatham. Mostly a strength day; the aerobics we did were mostly in the warmup. Did everything I could; couldn't do the side squats (they've bothered my knees for years). Good upper body workout, too.

Note

Did more yard work, picking up piles of raked-up hickory nuts with the help of the snow shovel. :-)

Running (paved) hills 37:03 [3] 3.16 mi (11:43 / mi) +76m 10:55 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Ran the "north block" clockwise, including several hills with a total of 250' of climb. I was pleased that I was able to keep up at least a jogging pace on all the hills (including the steepest one on Jefferson Hill Rd., which kicks up about 90' in 0.2 mi) and didn't have to resort to walking. Progress!

Knees didn't hurt while running (but I took Aleve earlier today).

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Moving (but no stepping) and and abs stretching after the weekend.

My knee was fine all weekend, but when I started going up and down the stairs here at home it started acting up again, and going downstairs this morning I tweaked it again (on top of the kneecap this time?!?)! Arggghhh... Pain, pain, go away!

Note

Raked up some leaves I should have done a few weeks ago (but it was cold!), being careful not to twist enough to bother my right hip or my left knee, my current weak points. Bleah.

Orienteering race (relay) 29:38 [5] *** 3.0 km (9:53 / km) +150m 7:54 / km
spiked:15/15c shoes: VJ Falcon - size 6

[Edited logged time to what they reported at the finish line.]

1st leg Orange course on EMPO 12-pt team in the US Relay Champs at Mendon Ponds near Rochester, set by Will Hawkins (very nice courses and excellent spectator opportunity).

Though the first leg was up a hill, I wasn't the last one! That felt good. :-) There were several different courses starting in the mass start, and they had forked first controls which baffled/tricked some people who weren't paying attention (i.e., checking their codes/descriptions), but I managed to not embarrass myself in the spectator area, and hit all the controls in the woods well, too, moving as fast as I could. I'll take under 10 min/k anytime, especially when it includes some woods running.

Fun, fun, fun, and our team was 3rd overall, 2nd US! (Last year's placing was our first relay medal, a bronze. This year we were 3rd US after the first leg, 3rd after the second [Sue doing Yellow], 4th after the third [Phil on Brown], and then Glen, running the anchor leg, managed to pull us up to 2nd, passing two other 12-pt-team runners in the woods section. The first place DVOA team was just too fast with two speedy teenage girls on the first two legs. :-) )
