Orienteering race 1:30:55 [4] *** 6.03 km (15:05 / km) +250m 12:29 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Green course -- I was thinking of running the Red for distance training, but was put off by the claimed 300 m of climb since my knee bothered me on Friday. It turns out that although climbing stairs gave me little niggling pains under the kneecap(s), orienteering hill-climbing didn't, and I had enough energy after the course to do a cool-down run. :-) Oh well, there's always next weekend...

FR measured 6.73 covered distance (SportTracks says 8.8, but that's clearly wrong, I wasn't that far off). Went too low on # 11 and 14 and had to climb back up hill, about 70-80 m off each time; maybe 5 minutes of error there. On one leg where I went straight instead of around there was more barberry on my route and it slowed me down, perhaps more than the extra distance would have, as I picked my way through the thinner areas. And though I was running (in the woods) more than this time last year, I could probably have picked up the pace in a few areas.

A very nice park with wide-open woods for the most part with young barberry and raspberry (which you could see easily and avoid if you wished) in places, not much rock, and good contour detail. Half the green-course controls were in reentrants, because there wasn't much else to use! Heavy trail network provided a challenge for the course setter, Nadya Popova, but she was up to it. A nice day -- thanks, HVO!

Running (dirt) warm up/down 8:37 [2] 0.95 km (9:04 / km)
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Felt that an hour and a half on the course wasn't enough, so I did a cool-down run near the start/finish on fairly flat paths. Could probably have stayed out longer but saw Glen wondering where I was.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Step aerobics at the Y, substitute instructor again, but the routine was a little more interesting than he's done before. Did most of the abs afterwards but modified the stretches.

Strength 10:00 [1]

Fitlinxx strength circuit -- arms only, as I'd already worked the legs in step class, plus my left(!) knee had started bothering me during the class (below the kneecap, as in lower on the leg, not internally).

Plus pull-downs at 62.5 lbs, but I could only manage 8 today. Not sure why, as I've done 10 or more in past weeks.

Walking 44:55 [2] 3.0 mi (14:58 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Walked to the Post Office to mail a couple of cards, then on to the 1.5 mi turnaround point on Albany Turnpike. Upper 30's and breezy, but it smells like spring, which it is as of today!

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Ex. class in Chatham, followed by a fruit platter with cheese chunks that one of the ladies brought in (she owns a restaurant) in honor of another one who turned 77 on Monday but looks 65. The birthday girl is also Jennifer's backup who has a key and opens up the place when Jen runs late and does little odd jobs.

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 8:28 [3] 0.75 mi (11:17 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Warmin' up.

Running (track) intervals 18:52 intensity: (8:41 @3) + (10:11 @5) 1.78 mi (10:36 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Intervals on the indoor track at the Y. The last fast one was tough as my right hip was just starting to twinge (clockwise around the track can do that as I lean a little into the corners -- there's no banking to the track). I was tired after 4. 5x345m fast (10:11 / 1.07mi), 5x230 (8:41 / .71mi) recovery --
1:58 / 1:36
2:03 / 1:39
2:02 / 1:45
2:06 / 1:49
2:02 / 1:52

Running (track) warm up/down 5:59 [3] 0.5 mi (11:58 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Coolin' down. Followed by 0.5 mi walking, 8:27, which I won't count separately.

Stairmaster 7:00 [2]

Just to try it out, and to throw in some climbing practice (for the DVOA Team Trials sprint?). I "climbed" 236 steps (23 floors).

Note

Weight is 1*7, down 3 lbs from when I started paying attention. [The * is because I'm not ready to disclose that information; but I wanted to note the ever-so-slow downward trend. If it goes down more I'll note that too.]

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Ex. class in Chatham. It's intriguing to me how much harder stepping is, the day after doing a long, slow run. The rest of the class was no different than usual.

Happy St. Pat's day everyone! May the luck o' the Irish be with you all. :-)
