Ten more UST streets on CityStrides (one is completed in the third outing today), plus the Snowman Run badge for the CMTR scavenger hunt (thus the snowman in the parking lot).

36 and sunny, less breezy than yesterday, so nice! No snow here so I couldn't make one any other way.

A few more UST streets. Mid-30s with a NW breeze but I was prepared for it. I didn't get frozen so I'm saving that scavenger hunt badge for some other day when it will likely be below 32F.

Web of Life/spirals with Deanna. I'm counting this as my (cross) Trained badge for CMTR, as I don't know if we'll get enough snow for snowshoeing, or a warm enough day (for me) for biking before the end of January. Done.

A few jogging spurts on some downhill areas. Collected five more streets in UST; these were on a ridge east of the town park. Nice houses! (You can get an idea of how nice on satellite view...). About 45 and partly to mostly cloudy with a little breeze.

Got my third CMTR badge, completing an easy one, Chocolate Run! (Had two Hershey mini chocolate bars when I finished.) And saw a shrub decorated as a gnome, chickadees and cardinals and maybe a titmouse, and an eagle!! (About 49-59 minutes in, where my speed drops dramatically for a minute or so while I watched it flying.)

I killed three birds with one stone at the post office today: had a photograph taken to mail with my passport renewal; collected some more streets/nodes in UST; and made a food donation to the collection box located there, completing another CMTR Scavenger Hunt challenge....

More streets. I conquered Applebutter Hill Rd. And Saucon Ridge Rd.

Hilly walk. And the only jogging I did was downhill on Saucon Ridge Rd.

Low 50s with part sun and clouds. Breeze from the west.

Completed a couple more roads in Upper Saucon for CityStrides. HR spikes are bogus; no HR strap, just the wrist sensor.

57 and mostly overcast, very light breeze if any.

Considered going out for another couple miles after lunch because it's so nice for walking, but my legs are saying, "No; rest."

Walked on the newly completed and opened rail trail section with Glen, south from Coopersburg through the rock cut (where they found dog-size dinosaur footprints) into Bucks County (and back). About 60 with sun periods and scattered clouds, a bit of breeze. The Brazilian teak boardwalk sections are beautiful.

In the crepuscular light (had my eyes dilated this morning and they're still somewhat dilated light sensitive (since they use 2 drops in each...last year when I was there the technician noted my light coloration and said that made a difference so she used less, which was plenty for the task but didn't keep my eyes dilated as long).

More Upper Saucon Valley streets completed; I walked in what's labeled Summit Lawn. (I had wondered where that was...there's an exit off I-78 for it).

Upper 50s and cloudy.

Looked online for more of this design shoe (model 4), but none are available in my size. Altra has moved on to model 4.5, which has some low ratings. Boo hiss.

Mtb trails at West End Regional Park, with sun and temps near 60(!). Rode all the little side trails on Roller Coaster (walked up the slight grade where the stone wall is...marked by the waypoint before split 3). Returned on Round About then crossed the road to do a loop on Extra Credit, but didn't make it over a dirt bump (bike got hung up at the top somehow) and I toppled over onto some dirt/rocks at the side of the bump...now I have a bruise with a scrape on my right thigh somehow. Bike seems okay (even though the handlebar turned 180* on itself) and I was able to finish the ride.

More nodes in SE Upper Saucon Township (east side of Coopersburg, near where the township hits the Lehigh/Bucks county line).

Mid 40s, filtered sun, and a breeze, so not as pleasant as five degrees warmer would be.

3 PM

More USTwp nodes, at Weyhill Estates. Glen dropped me off so I wouldn't have to the do out from the Reading Dr rail trail lot, and original plan was he'd pick me up at Spring Valley Tavern, but he did some extra (unplanned) running so I made it back to the parking lot.

33-34F and some breeze; I chose this location though because there was a good size ridge to the NW, between me and the NW winds. It mostly did the job.

Around the neighborhood. Low 40s would have been okay on its own, but a stiff NW breeze made ny ears and hands unpleasantly cold even with adequate cover. Tomorrow will be much of the same (with less wind?), then it warms up again by the weekend.

ahr:105 max:132 shoes: Altra Torin Plush4-silv

Walked on Vera Cruz Rd from Lanark to collect more nodes. Checked out the purported 8th, 9th, and 10th Streets on their map (derived from Open Street Map), which do not exist in real life, nor do the side roads connecting them. There are houses and driveways but nothing so organized, and in fact other maps show different road configurations. Turned around on Mountainside Lane when I saw a couple residents go to get in their car... about 50, sunny and breezy, but somewhat sheltered by the ridge so not bad. Someone near the Lanark Rd junction has an Osage orange tree in their yard dropping fruit, some of which was splattered in the road.

It's getting harder to find public or otherwise acceptable places to park as I go farther afield (I figure church parking lots on weekdays are fair game). Part of the challenge! Determined I won't be able to park where I parked today in order to cross Rt 145/Pike Ave to visit Oakhurst, as pedestrians are not allowed to cross at that busy intersection.

DVOA Brown course at Governor Dick park near Lebanon PA. Upper 40s with a chance of showers then rain this afternoon but it held off (yay!).

4.1 km, 120m climb

The course stayed on the much less green western half of the ridge, climbing early, then contouring, before dropping to #5. To 6 I was pulled off my line by another bag and had to correct; to 9 I was off line again but figured it out based on the green blob to its NE. Both times I drifted right....

Long boring trail run to 10; I took the lower and slightly longer route, with less climb and much fewer rocks. Otherwise, slow and steady and no problem with my taped ankle (beyond taking care going through rocky ground).

I wore an additional shirt but otherwise dressed the same as at French Creek and was much more comfortable today (esp. with no rain).

Yes or No O designed by Sam K. Very fun, especially since I did it right. 1.2 km nominal with 55m climb, on a 1:2500 blow-up of a detailed rocky area.

13 control flags but some were placed on nearby similar but incorrect features. For any control missed or mispunched, there was a steep 7:30 penalty.

I got them all right!

I didn't call them all spikes because there was one I went back to after passing by (11).

Thanks for the mental challenge, Sam!

Nockamixon trails at 71F...fabulous!

I'm missing a bit of track because I stopped my watch and forgot to restart until a bit down the trail. (Straight line near the northern end; edited distance/time based on Glen's track.)

Did some northern trails I hadn't been on before; warmed up on the road, then went to upper Cold Spot, upper Hammer to (new to me) lower Hammer and lower Cold Spot. Crossed the major creek (walking the bike) and then didn't recognize where I was so rode on Eastern Woods until I recognized the next creek crossing and turned around to ride Haycock a couple of times before calling it quits and heading back to parking.

Shickshinny 3 Adv2 course designed by Sandy, 4.4 km, using UsynligO. Thanks, Sandy!

Sandy had mentioned the previous day she and Bob Fink were meeting there this morning, and we saw them in the parking area when we arrived. They headed out while we were still changing clothes, with Bob on the same course as me, and Glen on the same course as Sandy. I never saw Bob out there; turns out he took a much less optimal route from the penultimate control to near the finish than I did (jogging downhill on a wide trail), and finished sometime after me. Sandy was at the finish and eventually called him to see if he was doing okay.

Uncertain on my distance to 3 so I went up to the ridge to be sure I was heading up the correct reentrant (I was, just needed to go a bit farther). To 9 I needed to make sense of the hills and depressions; and to 12 there are many unmapped small depressions in the reentrant I was following, so checked the ridge to make sure I was where I wanted to be. Otherwise, some of it was familiar, some was just blissfully pleasing woods, and the rest required a bit of concentration.

Another gorgeous non-typical November day, sunny and low 70s (upper 60s before we started and as we left). Lots of oak leaves down disguised some of the rocks underfoot so I needed to be careful to watch for ankle-turners.

More streets and nodes for CityStrides.

Low 70s and sunny...this is November? ;-) It was odd to be in a T shirt and see the Christmas tree/decorations up at the Promenade Shops as I went by.

Also...hooray! We have a new president!

MtB trails at West End Regional Park (WERP). Temps were onto the 60s by the time we arrived, so wonderful riding conditions...except for all the leaves on the trails disguising hazards/obstacles like rocks and roots and downed branches, one of which took me down early on. No falls after that though I did a few foot downs and walked the bike up some short, steeper sections on Roller Coaster. Legs were on the tired side... (Forgot to start my watch until a few minutes in, so I've adjusted time/distance.)

Checked out the trail that had a downed tree (actually, a cluster of birches) as of yesterday... someone had already been there to chainsaw it and move that part off the trail. Nice that they have a Facebook site to keep riders informed.

Stopped to eat a sandwich before heading out again.

Another spin after lunch, when it was near 70. :-)

The reported climb seems quite bogus.

A stroll after we got home to get more steps in, but I wasn't trying to set any speed records. To the park and back. Still in the mid 60s as the sun was setting.

Lots of kids (a couple dozen, anyway), on bikes, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades, plus a few runners and kids playing basketball. What a wonderful day to be outside.

Did some streets in another part of town starting from Station Ave, and returned to parking via the rail trail. Saw a monument to a no-longer-existing bridge across Laurel Run called the Centennial Bridge which used to connect Station Ave to Rt 309 (Quakertown Pike?) across the creek.

Saw these very large erratics (at least 5m tall) somewhere on one of my routes. ;-)

HVO/WCOC Winter Series #1 -- Green course at Harriman (just north of Rt 6), while Glen ran the Red. Parking at the semicircular road off Rt.6 NW of the Long Mountain Circle - aka Turkey Hill Pond Trail Head. Beautiful day for a Harriman course, upper 50s to 60 and bright sunny skies.

4.8 km, 185m climb (but mostly gradual/spread out)

Great to be back in this terrain though the blueberry bushes are getting higher, and "indistinct" trails I crossed are pretty much invisible (except for the one between 3 and 4). Slow going on the downhills and rocky areas because I was favoring my ankles (wore Active Ankle on left; taped the right), and I walked rather than jogged. Messed up a bit on #3 (hit a rocky/rocky ground near edge of circle short of the control and relocated) and a lot more on #8 (bad route; should have crossed the stream and hit the trail then contoured in). A bit confusing looking for #7 because there seemed to be more cliffs than mapped, but I found it. Flag at #5 was visible from a distance on my approach. About 13-14 minutes of error.

A nice day in the woods.

My route is on RouteGadget

French Creek West Brown Course; 4.0 km, 95m climb; about 48 F and cloudy turning to steady showers.

Not a great course, map didn't reflect vegetation level (or trails in some cases), crappy woods, and awful navigation on my part. I found the first 6 of a potential 11 controls, and only 5 of those 6 cleanly. Three of the first six (1, 2, 6) were white/yellow level. Did the first three okay, but did not do well on bearing going to #4 and circled around through the buildings and trails. Did okay to #5 but took my time getting into and out of the reentrant in the midst of rocky ground, where the rocks were covered with slippery moss, because by this time it had started to rain lightly (rain continued until well after I finished and changed). Okay, though slow, to #6.

Then I had a choice of climbing a trail to attack from 20m higher than the control and 200m away--from a potentially bland attackpoint--or try to contour 450m, to a charcoal platform in a somewhat distinct reentrant, through saplings and/or rocky ground. I chose to contour, but think I didn't go far enough or low on the hill enough, and got pushed around by the vegetation, so I never found anything looking like what I sought, and I was getting wetter and colder. At that point, I stopped looking and attempted to navigate due east to the N-S trail between 8 and 9 (never saw #8 either) but again got pushed around by vegetation and hit the trail well north of where I expected to. I attempted to find #10, a circle ditch 125m off the trail in supposedly white woods, but almost immediately came upon a large downed tree I had to skirt, found other orienteers still looking for the control (I think we were all too far east), and looped back to the trail to finish coming back to parking, all of which took a couple minutes longer than finding the first 6 controls. A cold, wet, demoralizing day.
