Schock's Rocks Score-O on DVOA's Governor Dick* map near Mt Gretna. Day started ~53 and overcast/breezy and while still cool, the sun had come out, at least partially, by the time we left.

37 control points were scattered across the map, with #points matching the control number. Course designer Sam Kolins had cleared it in 16.7 km (2222 pts).

I did a clockwise loop, starting across the road for three controls (64-43-85) before heading back to the road and 82. I was at 82 at a half hour.

At this point I chose not to go up the hill to 56 and 44 but headed to 62. Skipped 42 and went to 52-61-72-49-51. I wanted to try for #50 (and its 153 points) and did well finding it, though on heading back up to the trail on the ridge I ended up near #51 again (oops). Picked up 41-32-37-31 on the way into finish, for a total of 915 points.

I was happy and undamaged when I finished, and that's good enough for me today.

Sandy was first and Julie second female--big props to them for beating some of the younger women on the course! Wyatt was overall winner, clearing the course. Well done!!

...........
Analysis:

Getting one more control would have put me ahead of Julie**. Getting 56 and 44 (or 44 and 42) would have put me ahead of Sandy and I probably would have had time to do so. But coulda-woulda-shoulda doesn't get you anything. ;-) I tend not to strategize well when I'm doing a Score-O or mini-Rogaine on my own.

*Clarence Schock Memorial Park and portion of adjoining State Game Lands 145

**Julie opted to visit 56+44+42+33 giving her 21 more points than the 153 pts I got from #50. And it was likely physically easier than dipping 13 contours down the hill to 50 and back up again.

71 and mostly cloudy, but the breeze I lamented a week or so ago (when it was in the 40s) was most welcome today. Gorgeous out.

Mostly paved, anyway. Temp was in mid to upper 50s and I needed to be in Allentown to meet someone at 5, so I decided to run nearby and then drive to where I would meet her to pass along quilt group files.

Ran in grass on side of most of the paved sections. Okay running on the gravel portions. (Knees don't like pavement.)

Saw a great blue heron and some ducks (mallard and mergansers), and during my cooldown walk (back to car after taking photos of the ducks) a golden trout.

In the neighborhood; 51, sunny, with light breeze from SE so not as chilly as yesterday.

Earlier, I drove to Lancaster for the AQS show. One of these days I should take a class with Bethanne Nemesh, but that didn't happen today. The ribbon winners are jaw-dropping gorgeous.

(For the quilters: Janet Stone's latest alphabet quilt was best of show. I think she's trying to make 26 of them. When a Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry quilt doesn't win a ribbon you know the quilts are GOOD!!))

Note

Some folks here on AP are counting states where they've orienteered. Here's the list for me (and Glen) (where rogaines [SD] count as orienteering):

30 states--
AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, SD, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WY

4 additional countries:
Canada (AB, BC, NB, NS, ON, QC)
Denmark
Iceland
Scotland

We've visited 18 other states but not officially* orienteered there, lacking only Alaska (where we can try to orienteer one day) and Mississippi (where we probably won't).

*Unofficial orienteering involves just using/reading a map to get someplace, and we've done that many places (e.g., London) but won't count them in this list.

Flying Pig XXIII, day two of *2018* Masters Nationals (two-day classic). Partly sunny, low to mid 40s, much like yesterday but into the 50s later so great for hanging around at the finish. I was one of the first starters on Brown A.

Brown A, F65, 3.3 km, 180m climb nominal; 1:7500 / 5m. Kiser Hollow map at Carter Caves Resort State Park.

Happy with all my routes except for being sloppy to #2, a pit (in a line of pits) on a broad spur, approached from the opposite side of the spur or at an angle. I did not approach the challenge properly as I didn't pace count until my second try. I guess my first thought was that I'd get to the flat part of the spur and find the first pit and work my way to the third, but it didn't happen that way. Relocated from a control on a ditch bend (first time I passed it I thought it was the ditch end/top and that I was higher on the hill than I really was), and still overshot it on my pace count but knew to stop, turn back, and head a bit higher on the hill. I found the fourth pit in the line so knew I was now at the right level, and then I saw two other Brown A runners going to the proper pit. AP says 6:30 minutes lost (it also gives me an "error" on the run-in but always does that...I don't sprint very fast), so a time in the 54-55 minute range was possible.

Good enough for first place, though, with my sister Nancy (close behind on day 2) in second! (Ruth B, who ages up for 2019, was 3rd followed by Leslie M. and someone from OLOU). I checked my log from the last Carter Caves event in 2015 and my F60 competitors included Sandy, Janet F, Sue H-T and Natalia D, none of whom attended this year.

Mary Jo, you would have loved it!

Thanks to all in OCIN for another well-organized and executed Flying Pig!

Scenic route that took us under huge cliffs E of the main lodge (Glen and I had hiked some of this trail when we were here in 2015).

Flying Pig XXIII, day one of 2018 Masters Nationals (two-day classic). Sunny, and low to mid 40s, feeling colder in the shaded valleys.

Brown A, F65 (shorter course than for F55-60), 3.3 km, 175m climb nominal; 1:7500 / 5m. Raven Bridge map at Carter Caves State Park.

No issues finding the controls. A couple of route choices that could have been better and faster (stay on trail longer to 1; contour around spur to 4 instead of climbing almost to the top of the hlll), but I was happy with the rest. 7th or 8th on Brown A (M-Brown open had some faster men running down a course; and the fast folks on M70 and M75).

EDIT: I think some of the heart rate data is bogus. Maybe I'll wear a chest strap tomorrow and see if there's much difference. (Garmin 235 with wrist-HR detection)

EDIT 2: Splits show my conservative route to 7 was slower than some. I was getting tired...

Middle Brown A at Camp McKee at the Flying Pig / 2018 Masters Champs
2.8 km, 130m climb (1:10000/5m map).

Uncertain in the circle at 1 (~1 min?) and misread control description at 8 (1:30) but otherwise found them well. Some I think were yellowish level, but I think courses were restrained by the terrain around the camp.

5th on Brown A, maybe? (behind 4 M75s and an M70).

DVOA St Patricks Day O at Hibernia State Park, aka Running Through the Green. 4.41 km, 153m climb (map is 1:10000, 10ft contours)

Map is almost all some shade of green, and the course setter placed many of the controls on locations that were easy to find but hard to get into through vines and prickers. I especially cursed at number two which was rocky as well as surrounded by thorns and vines and downed trees.

Then I hesitated a bit checking the route to 3 (also Red 10-11). I didn't want to ford a stream so early in the race, and couldn't cross below the dam, so finally headed out toward the road.

I was off line just a bit to #5, but when I knew I'd gone the right distance I corrected from the hill just south. The rest was fine and fun. I just wish the park would let some goats loose to deal with the thorns! :-)

Some others were doing multiple courses, but this was enough for me given I haven't been training much these past few weeks. And multiple courses would have meant even more crossings of the muddy corn fields....

Everything is muddy now. :-)
