Note

During the past week it was fun to see the constellation Orion overhead instead of low in the sky (we were at 7 deg north in Panama). Looked for the Big Dipper once but didn't see it.
10 AM

Walking 1:07:24 intensity: (36:51 @0) + (22:07 @1) + (3:22 @2) + (4:31 @3) + (14 @4) + (19 @5) 1.67 mi (40:21 / mi) +14m 39:22 / mi
ahr:88 max:156

Added time and distance for lap from 1st lap split to S (we started where I took the first lap but I forgot to start my watch until the turnaround).

High HR probably from when we climbed up four stories at the observation tower.
8 PM

Note

Before heading to airport we went to Anne Kolb Nature Center and strolled around. It was 60 with a breeze out of the north (after last night's rain) and we saw no birds or mammals, just a tree crab (on the walkway railing). Meh. Yesterday's walks were more interesting.

Note

Added commentary to entries about our cruise from Costa Rica to Panama.

Yesterday we had a bus ride from the dock at the port of Colón back to Panama City airport, with a stop at the Miraflores Locks visitor center which had an informative display, most of which had been covered in the documentary we had seen earlier, "A Man, a Plan, a Canal, Panama." Turns out El Papa was in town for the 2019 Catholic World Youth Day but he didn't hold us up much (one 4-5 minute stoppage on a highway entering the city, and a bunch of young people at the visitor center).

Going through security in Panama City I had my cuticle scissors confiscated (as did other passengers)...first time, though I remember putting them in my checked bags the first few years after 9/11.
1 PM

Walking 1:08:08 intensity: (53:21 @0) + (8:39 @1) + (4:43 @2) + (1:21 @3) + (4 @4) 1.05 mi (1:04:53 / mi)
ahr:79 max:136

Wildlife viewing at the Florida International University nature preserve. Saw some interesting bird behavior (tropical mockingbirds, most likely, or northern).

Walking 53:50 intensity: (40:10 @0) + (10:35 @1) + (1:40 @2) + (1:10 @3) + (15 @4) 0.71 mi (1:15:48 / mi)
ahr:81 max:147

Wildlife viewing at AD Barnes County Park in Miami. Saw birds and some interesting iguana behavior. ;-)

ahr:82 max:159 shoes: 2015 Altra LP2.0-9 lime

Hike around part of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute observing the flora and fauna for the first part.

Later we took a Zodiac ride (~an hour and a half, 5.335 mi) along the shores of Barro Colorado Island, created when Gatún Lake was flooded (three years to fill it) after the dam was built. Dams along the canal provide hydroelectricity to run the lock equipment.

Toucans were heard but not seen, my only disappointment on this trip.
4 PM

Other 2:35:32 [0] 7.42 mi (20:58 / mi)
ahr:73 max:153

Last section of the canal from Gatún Lake to the Caribbean and our dock.

First sections of the Panama Canal from the Pacific side including locks at Miraflores and Pedro Miguel, rising a total of 85', they said.

What's truly amazing is that besides a bit of maintenance the locks and canal sides are the original from over 100 years ago (opened in August of 1915). The "mules"/locomotives used to keep ships centered in the locks are on their third generation (first ones were made by GE, second generation and the current ones are by Mitsubishi).

Snorkeling at Granito de Oro near Coiba National Park, Panama, as the tide was going out, our only snorkeling adventure this trip.

ahr:74 max:91

Kayaking ("destination kayak" along mangrove forests to a cantina) in the Golfito part of Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica.

In the morning we visited Casa Orquideas, a tropical botanical garden owned by a couple who originally hailed from New Hampshire.

Yesterday we visited two local farms, one that grows/prunes palm trees for hearts of palm in thr morning, and another where they grow cacao plants as well as many others (vanilla, black pepper, lemon, white pineapple, etc.), to avoid a monoculture. Lunch was on the beach at Playa Blanca (prepared by chefs from the ship), and we had snacks at the Jacana ranch in the morning and at the cacao farm, Finca Cabo, in the afternoon.

Guided hike (forest trail) at Punta Caletas preserve near Corcovado National Park on Osa Peninsula, found on Costa Rica's Pacific side. While this is a rainforest with lush vegetation, we were there during the dry season and had bo rain at all.

Monteverde Sky Walk, the more physical one. We saw lots of trees and flowers. The straighter sections are elevated bridges above the canopy.

The slower/shorter walk group saw a sloth and a howler monkey. :-O

Monteverde Cloud Forest hike with guide. Saw a quetzal pair! and other birds. Then we visited the hummingbird house/outdoor garden and saw different species of h'birds, plus a mammal called an olingo. Cool!

Forgot to stop watch until we were back on the bus.

Bill Baggs State Park at Cape Florida on Key Biscayne. Looking for widlife but we didn't see much besides raccoons trying to scavenge trash cans in the parking areas, squirrels, and a few birds and butterflies.

HR bogus sometimes.

Nicer than a couple days ago, 32 and only faint breeze if any, so I went longer. Around the neighborhood, where they've finally finished all the sidewalks... except the one along Colonial near the giant dirt pile.

HR at beginning likely bogus.

No nice valley to hike in around here....

We drove into Bucks County to High Rocks/Ralph Stover State Park near Point Pleasant, PA, and not far from the Delaware River. The high exposed cliffs and boulders are on the north side of the Tohickon Creek, which flows into and out of Nockamixon Lake. The parking area was full, not surprising on this relatively warm (52 and partly sunny) New Years Day.

You never had a really good view of either the rocks or the Tohickon from the cliff vista points, but we hiked first to the road and down to a bridge that might once have been covered but now is just wide wood planks and high wood sides. It was closed to car--but not foot--traffic. A few hardy folks were putting kayaks in near the bridge; yesterday's rain made for some nice whitewater, I'm sure.

Parking lot to edge of Ringing Rocks boulder field, and back to car. We hadn't brought hammers so didn't venture farther out, but others were out on the boulders trying likely candidates and finding a few. Neat. We'll be back.

48 and overcast.
