Note

Signed up for a New Year's Day 5k (traveling...but not racing*...with Glen) in Reading. If it's brutal cold will probably wimp out and sit in car, but 20-25F will be doable. Ends at a craft brewery so it'll be worth the trip whether I run or not.

On my feet a lot over the weekend as we had my family (two brothers, and a sister who arrived Sun. afternoon, plus the kids) around on Sat. and Sun. and part of Mon. Lots of help in the kitchen (and before, decorating the tree with Greg and Stevie and Owen). Greg et al were here Fri-Sun but had to leave before his brother arrived Sun. afternoon (juggling parents; our days of doing that are over).

*at the same speed...that'll never happen unless he slows to my speed.

At Little Lehigh Parkway, starting from Bogert's covered bridge (off Oxford St.), Temperature was around 56. Trail had puddles in places from last week's snow. :-)

Stopped and walked near the end, but the rest was jogging. Ran as far as the Santa and sleigh part of the city's light display (Lights in the Park Allentown).

Neighborhoods. A bit cooler and more breeze than a few days ago; 37 and breeze from west. I was going to walk to the Curly Horse development west of here but the breeze in my face was unpleasant so I turned up Aberdene and did a few loops there.

Some nice Christmas decorations, some gaudy (like the lawn full of little things...where do they store them off season?); one house had an inflatable Santa with a lineup of reindeer at a trough, some of which would bow their heads to "eat" periodically. Cute.

Supposed to be 50 on Wednesday, so our little bit of snow will disappear by then.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Yoga close to home. Lots of neck stretching, which I needed today.

Note

Walked from parking lot to Christkindlmarkt in Bethlehem, PA, with my daughter-in-law, and back, plus around the market. We were on our feet for several hours so that's worth a mention in my log even though it's not really worth logging as training.

It started snowing here about an hour before we left home, but didn't really start sticking to the roads until later in the afternoon. Maybe 4 -5" on the ground? Roads were warm enough to melt the snow for the most part, until later in the day, so not as much accumulation there. It set the scene nicely, though. Bethlehem puts on a nice Christmas party, though it was too cloudy/snowy to see the star on the mountain south of town (and on the Star Village orienteering map).

The Tryson menfolk we left behind deserve extra thanks for letting us have this girls' day out. :-)

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Yay...back to yoga! This is the class our regular yoga instructor holds at the local library (about 4 miles away). 17 students

I needed the hip twist stretching we did. Probably did more planks and down dogs than my shoulder liked, though.

Brown course at Fair Hill for mid-Atlantic championships meet between DVOA and QOC. Nominally 4.2 km, 75 m climb

Fair Hill is not my favorite venue because it's open fields for the most part with wedges and snippets of woods--where controls are usually placed--which can be scratchy in places. I'm not much of a runner so am at a disadvantage to those who *can* run. In some places in the fields, even the grass (although fallen over) was an impediment (except perhaps for those young high-stepping folks who probably had no trouble with it). But I navigated well ... except for number 3 where I didn't see the intended rootstocks/dirt balls/mapped knolls and checked many other unmapped ones before trying again from a stream junction. Probably lost 8-10 minutes there (I haven't analyzed the track).

My route from 5-6 was probably one of the slower ones; I thought I'd lose too much elevation dropping to the road but I suspect it was the best.

25th on Brown last time I checked.

Added Note: AJ Riley smoked the course in just under 27 minutes!

First leg (1.3 km 35m climb) of relay for an 8-pt DVOA team with Ron Bortz and Fred Reed.

I was probably last to finish on leg 1 (unless there were some walkers), but we finished 5/8 teams thanks to Ron and Fred.

DVOA won! :-)

McKaig Night-O, Green course, in some of the woods I played in as a kid ;-) (granted, it was private property then and I wasn't really supposed to be there...I grew up on the side road off King of Prussia Rd just ENE of control 5).

Woods were open for the most part with some green in places but not much prickly stuff. Enjoyed woods for the most part; course had a few doglegs but nothing too aggravating; besides I never saw very many people out there until near the end when Wyatt and his companion caught up to me (and led the way into 10-14. A bit off to the left at 4 but found the rootstock (among others); and a bit befuddled by the bonfire near 12... I could see the control but wasn't sure where the bridge across the stream was with the tent and bonfire there. Didn't particularly enjoy the steep climb to 8 but managed okay by zigzagging on the way up (and thinking about climbing up out of the streambed when I was 9 or 10 :-)). Control 14 (ruin; actually a chimney) made me smile remembering when my playmates and I thought it was a witch's tower (it could be seen from the field behind Roberts School when leaves were off the trees).

Unfortunately, although I visited #2 and am positive I punched (I waited for the lights because I didn't know whether I was waking up controls, as one of the earlier starters), it wasn't recorded on my stick. I don't know if Vadim will fix it; I told Mary Frank (working epunch) I did visit the control. My split (I took my own splits) was 3:13 from #1.

In all, a fun outing! Did a drive by of the old homestead before it got too dark...looks good for almost 61 (my family moved into this "new" development in 1957).
