Note

Holyroodhouse Palace and the Scottish Museum (at least the Kings of Scotland exhibit and maybe one other), then Kenilworth's on Rose St for not-great fish and chips. Kenilworth's is a Nicholson's Pub restaurant and we didn't find the best food at any others but this was the least good for fish and chips anyway (cod and not haddock, for one thing; undercooked and mushy for another).

Walking 2:00:00 [1]
slept:10.5 shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Walking around for most of the day has to count for something, right? My knees are achy and stiff, anyway. Only putting down two hours; walked three to four miles but at a slow pace, looking around and taking breaks. Hotel to Edinburgh Castle to Holyroodhouse to Calton Hill and back to the hotel 10 hours later. A couple of meals and a cup of coffee along the way.

The folks runnng up the path to Salisbury Craigs were working harder. I don't think we'll get up there.

Note

Ed'burgh Castle, lunch at the castle, dinner (good fish and chips...best of the trip in my opinion) at World's End on the Royal Mile, then hiked back to hotel by way of Holyroodhouse Palace and Calton Hill.

Note

Scotland! Good flight. Partly sunny as we landed in Edinburgh, so we could see some of the surrounding landscape. As lovely as I imagined. Got an hour of sleep on the plane, an achievement as I generally can't sleep sitting up, and I've only achieved about 30 minutes on previous red eyes.

I need to get used to the "accent" as I had to have the Starbucks barista at the airport repeat herself twice. (I realize that we're the ones with the accent now.)

General scoping of the layout; walked over toward the Castle then down Royal Mile partway before heading back toward hotel; dinner (salmon) on Rose St at a pub.

As for the flight, Economy (paying for extra legroom) seating meant free hot dinner (at 11pm) and free wine...Chardonnay in a plastic bottle was a bit tart. The red was Merlot which from experience I know gives me a headache so I avoided it, and the Pinot noir (extra cost) was 2.5 servings, more than I could drink. Vanilla bean gelato made up for the tart wine (even tho' vanilla is my least favorite flavoring).

Walking 31:13 [3] 2.0 mi (15:36 / mi) +22m 15:05 / mi
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

A quick walk to mail some things at the P.O. (and beyond to my turnaround point for two miles). Temp already in the upper 70s and somewhat humid but not too oppressive, considering.

The dips in the track (for those who can see it) are when I stopped my watch: to clear some large branches off the road, to go into the P.O., and to get the mail at our mailbox on the way back.

Pilates class (balls) 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0

The big bouncy balls are actually my favorite Pilates tool, though the instructor doesn't like them much, so we only use them once in awhile and when the class is smaller because the selection doesn't match the class (too many folks end up with overinflated and/or larger diameter balls than work well for their size).

Opposite-arm-and-leg on the ball became on the floor for me when my right knee rebelled in pain. It feels okay now, but I can't put weight on it without major discomfort (banged it last Aug 1 and then again in October).

Walk/Jog (indoor track) 31:30 intensity: (3:35 @1) + (19:23 @2) + (8:32 @3) 2.27 mi (13:53 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Was thinking of using the elliptical, but the two I prefer were both in use, so off to the track it was. Walked a mile first (14:55), then 5 laps jogging + 2 walking (7 laps to a half mile) and repeat, except I think I miscounted the second jogging segment and did six laps instead of five. Then cool down. So I jogged 11 laps which is more than last time...slight progress.

Pulldowns, adductors and leg presses after plus stretching.

Will E found this article from Wired.com and linked to it in his log. Fascinating story about maps and mapping in Soviet times.

Pilates class (weights) 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Mainly a body-weight workout, though we did use hand weights for chest presses, flies (one armed), inner thighs, and biceps. Lots of stuff to bother my shoulder.
11 AM

Walk/Jog (indoor track) 32:35 intensity: (3:39 @1) + (19:52 @2) + (9:04 @3) 2.2 mi (14:49 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Half mile walk, half mile jog, half mile walk, three laps jog, finish the mile walking, then cool down.

Pulldowns and leg presses after plus stretching.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham; back for the first time since before Idaho (sessions go 6 or 7 weeks with a week off; often the break weeks correspond with our vacations so I'm away even longer). She wants to work the class up to a one minute plank by the end of the session. BTDT.

---------------------------------

We went to the Albany I Spy wrap up party and 20 questions in a trivia quiz this afternoon before heading to the Y (we were good and didn't have a beer there...). Lots of folks had gotten all the answers right, so after the prizes were awarded we checked with another couple on the ones we missed so we could go back and check them out. The first clue was the one intriguing me the most.

There were plenty of giveaways, so every team got something; the ones with higher scores chose first, so things like beer growlers/brewery gift certificates, etc., went first. We did get an Albany T shirt, with a block-letter A made up of silhouettes of various sights around Albany or trivia (like when it was first chartered...which was helpful when that was one of the first questions in the trivia quiz!). Good times.

Walking (city sidewalks) 39:04 [1] * 1.23 mi (31:46 / mi) +46m 28:28 / mi
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

We decided to walk around downtown Albany and look for old buildings that might be pictured in close-up on the Albany I-Spy master clue sheet for 2015. We did this two years ago with G&S (missed last year's I-Spy) and had a good time. Couldn't find three of the 14, and have no idea where to find them, so this may be it for us this year. The three tracks show where we went exploring. I forgot to take splits so maybe only one giveaway here... This track is separate from track #2 because I wasn't sure the GPS was active so I saved the first one and restarted.

Dinner at Albany Pump Station (before track #3), because we were there. :-) Glen's Asiago Alfredo was SO tasty (he let me steal some), and my Spring Salad was fine too. The 1786 deal they offer on Sundays is a good option if you're in Albany on a Sunday.

We might go to the I-Spy wrap-up party in Albany tomorrow afternoon to see if 11/14 wins any prizes. :-)

Walking 2:44:17 [1] * 5.49 mi (29:56 / mi) +62m 28:55 / mi
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

There are a couple of spikes in the track that are likely due to tall building interference; I know we weren't moving at 4 minute miles at any time.

First time I hit negative splits doing this... 14:48 / 14:38; 3:39 for the 0.2mi cool down.

Yoga 55:00 [2]
slept:7.0

The Yoga-Pilates fusion class that Glen usually goes to on Mondays because the Chatham class is on hiatus this week. It was hard. Time will tell what my shoulder thought of all the planks/down dogs.
11 AM

Walk/Jog (indoor track) 22:54 [3] 1.48 mi (15:28 / mi)
ahr:131 max:160 shoes: 2015 Altra LP2.0-9 lime

Will update Updated time/distance from the FR...I used the HR monitor. And new shoes which I need to add. Last 0.2mi was cool down walk.

This was a test run for them, and I think they'll work fine (plus it's been too long to think about returning them. I can't use the original insoles, though, because the heel cup comes up too high on the outside. I *may* be able to trim them...

Pulldowns and adductors after.

Pilates class (weights) 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Back to Pilates after almost two weeks...some things felt hard to do, so it's a good thing, and I really should do more of these on my own when we travel. Shoulder has been achy so didn't dream of trying the side planks which I know aggravates it. Did overhead tricep curls while the others did Pilates push-ups-with-one-leg-off-the-floor.
11 AM

Fitness equipment 5:30 [2]
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Started out on the hill interval program on my favorite elliptical...until a man took his place on a machine near me. His fragrance (not body odor but something pungent) overwhelmed me and chased me away. Since there are only two of that style elliptical (footpad spacing suits my hips; the others have wider footpads which make striding uncomfortable), I had to leave.

Walk/Jog (indoor track) 17:10 intensity: (3:15 @1) + (13:55 @3) 1.2 mi (14:18 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

So it was back to the track. I walked 3 laps, jogged the next 5, walked 4 and jogged the last 2.5 (14.5 laps=1 mi) before slowing down a bit for a cool down. Finished up with pulldowns but no leg presses because that machine had a broken belt.
