Pilates class 55:00 [2]

With bands.

After, I did the adductor machine (12x2@75#) because you can't really do inner thighs with the band; and pulldowns (12@62.5, at that weight mostly because I didn't want to search for the additional half-weight that wasn't conveniently hanging on the machine). And additional stretching.

Class in Chatham. Ankle nuisance pain acted up so had to be careful with some moves. Regular walking is mostly okay; some lateral and angled moves not. Baffling.

Pilates class 55:00 [2]

Just weights today. Started out with down dogs and planks and then flowed into leg extensions and pulls, then into warrior, triangle, and forward fold. My shoulder had been feeling okay lately (three weeks off from Pilates?) so I gave it a try and don't feel any reactive strain at the moment. Later on we did some planks-to-side planks and I did a couple of those too. I did avoid the push-ups because I know they're trouble, and did overhead triceps with 16# (2 8-pounders) instead. Right knee (the one I bashed) still has some pain in certain positions so I have to be careful moving and stretching.

Learned the name of another classmate by introducing myself. She likes to leave a fan on (and we don't) so sometimes it's a battle, but now that we've "spoken" maybe she'll be more reasonable sometimes? Another woman I know who was set up near her did ask for the fan off today and she complied, so I didn't have to ask. :-)

Aborted attempt at elliptical with a nuisance pain in my right ankle below the bone (arthritis?). 3:30, 0.17 distance units.

Did leg presses (at 95 and 90#), adductors, and pulldowns, plus a bit more stretching.

I enjoyed life better when I could exercise without having to take painkillers first. This is depressing.

Maybe I *should* take up water running instead (Glen and I were talking about using the Y's pool for cross training, since we can). Ugh. Does one need a flotation device for that?

Maps (from Peter)

Having done Corn Maze O once before, I knew to take it very slow and carefully to the first few controls to get a feel for the scale (1:1,000) of the map. For instance, one short and fairly trivial leg, about 2cm long, at the southwest end of the map took me 30 seconds (9-10). I don't remember all my errors but do know that one the way from 7-8 I ended up in the straight-away section in the S corner (lower right) of the maze...oops. Didn't use compass much and when I did (16-17) it messed me up because I didn't realize until after the race that the top of the map was oriented a bit NNE. Liked my route choice on this one, though, which was to go N to the edge of the checkerboard and run along the edge looking down the rows until I saw the flag at the end of the row.

Fun to climb up on the viewing platform to watch others zooming out of the maze to finish (some of them neglecting to punch at the ultimate control at a start point just inside the edge).

23/50 even with my mistakes; 4th woman (about 4-5 min. behind the speedy group of Izzy, Alex, and Barb -- not necessarily in that order), not that that counts for anything. :-)

Long route choice legs! Probably could have chosen faster routes but did okay. I think I messed up one of these but now, looking at the map, I can't remember which...either 3 or 4, I think. From 1-2 I zoomed around the top of the raven's head (E side of map/maze).

Orienteering race (Corn Night-O!) 39:22 [3] *** 2.7 km (14:35 / km) +2m 14:32 / km
24c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

While waiting for darkness to do the night-O, and after feasting at Bub's BBQ (where I restrained myself on food quantities), we did the Corn Maze Trail O from the viewing platform. You had to use good bearings, distance estimation, and a bit of dumb luck (imho) to get close...just like in real Trail O. I managed to get one exactly, and the other two far enough off to not earn points, for 10 points total of a possible 30; highest result was 17 points. Photos and Results

The "mellow mass start" for the Night O required that everyone punch the start box separately, so maps were handed out in a "seeded" manner with fastest folks starting first but getting their maps last (while the rest of us were able to look at the maps for a bit before starting).

The night-O was a blast with lots of people out and about in the maze and you trying to not to be blinded (or blind anyone else with your headlamp) or get run over. Decided early on not to try to get them all in order, though it would probably have been doable within the 60-minute limit, just very tricky and intense. So I did a mostly counterclockwise loop, saving some of the higher point controls at the north end for last. At 46 my plan was to do 46-47-48-51 and in; after 46 I navigated to 47 but thought I needed to go to the next row and punch 51, then 48 and in, and neglected to punch 47. The mind plays tricks on you...

Would have been spooky doing it alone.

30th again, out of 38 this time, with 36 of a possible 49 points

Schlepping carry-on bags on and off of two flights. I can stack and roll them through the airport, but moving through the plane that way isn't possible. Right shoulder gets achy when I carry heavy (8+ lbs) items.

Our flight was around 7:30 from Denver so we left our nearby motel around 5:00 am. Pleased to see "TSA Precheck" on *both* Glen's and my boarding passes this time. We didn't have to remove shoes or outerwear, or take computer or quart-size bag of liquids out of our bags. And we had an "old-fashioned" metal detector, not the full body scanner where you raise your hands above your head. Just like the days pre-2001.

Almost lost my cell phone at DFW, when I had it charging at a charging kiosk while I sat on a chair not far away but was distracted (typing on iPad). Glen looked up and noticed it was not on the shelf; I asked the guy sitting nearby who was "putting things away in his backpack" if he'd seen it and he opens his pack and removes the wrapped up charger and phone. Profuse apologies ("I was going to turn it in") but he stayed nearby while I sat next to it with my back turned to him. Sneaky devil; good eyes on Glen. Lesson learned.

To start of Day 2, Round Mountain map, similar weather to Saturday. Meet notes called it a 750 m walk.

Arrived early enough to hang around for a bit, congratulate Claire Dell of OCIN for her and her husband's win of a Golden Troll Award on Saturday, and chat with a few other folk before warming up briefly to make sure my knees would still work. I'd fallen again coming out of #3 yesterday, and bashed the right knee again, but not as hard (sore triceps later showed I'd caught myself with my arms this time rather than all on the knee).

The test today was to put out of mind my placing from day 1 as I've often gotten mentally distracted by my competition instead of focussing on the orienteering. I was successful and was clean on all the controls, finishing with a time I was okay with on the 4.9km / 70m course with more technical placements than on day 1.

I started at 10:03, and the last results posted were just before noon with only 3 of 6 in my class, so I didn't know how I'd done relative to Beatrice... until the awards, where I was called up as the winner. !!!

I talked to her later and she said she'd had a big mistake on our #6 finding our #3 flag but not realizing it was one she had already visited. Bummer for her, but lucky break for me. My first US Classic Champs age group win, and I think only the second overall champs win (Middle at Moses Lake Sand Dunes in Washington state several years ago). Nice.

Note

Thunderstorms were threatening to the east so we left just before it hit M Lazy C Ranch, but not before we got back to our lodging... When we got out to US 24 it had started raining, and a few minutes later it was hailing, and then accumulating on the road...winter driving conditions! Temp dropped quickly (per the car's thermometer) from the 60s to mid 40s by the time we made it to the house. Exciting.

Didn't feel I had a clean run because I was off a bit (again, usually to the left) on maybe a third of the controls, but AP split analysis shows no errors, so relative to others I guess it was a clean run.

Pleased to be just five minutes behind Beatrice as I saw her as the likely winner overall based on past experience. Virginia Lehman has also beat me in the past, and I think she had been in Laramie so was likely more used to altitude, but I have a good cushion going into Sunday.

Trail O Champs course plus three TempO problems. Interesting experiment after having attended Clare's talk on Friday, but results showed I only got one TempO control correct and 9 of the 16 TrailO problems (several of which were later protested and two thrown out). I learned I really didn't enjoy it, especially after having been on a regular foot O course earlier, because I'm much more rewarded by choosing a route and executing it well, than picking out the right flag of many (or none!). If TrailO were all A-Z problems (where you identify if the flag is placed correctly or not, and have a 50-50 chance of getting it right), I might participate more often. Meh.

Sharon was course designer for the champs, letting her experience protests from another angle. ;-)

After listening to a couple of talks at the convention, Glen and I teamed up for a try at cell phone O, sponsored by the junior team on a blown up black and white campus map of the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

I went first, and other than a couple of hesitations while I searched for streamers in the control circle (including one which called the control a "tree" when in actuality the tree had been taken down and the streamers placed on an electrical box at the position), did fine for a first time. Mostly brisk walking with a bit of jogging here and there, followed by sitting while Glen was out. The person back at home base had to write down the word printed on the correct streamer that the runner found.

Ran down our cell batteries, but it was fun. :-)

Valuable because my bearings were off to the left on most points...good to know to use other techniques even in the wide open terrain. Good also to attempt to understand mapping differences in the boulders, dot knolls, knolls, boulder clusters, and rocky ground. Pace counting woked well for the most part, then I looked off to my right. :-)

Leg 2, nominal 1.7 km, unknown climb but some; intermediate level. Course redesigned a bit at the last minute to avoid the tag-off being in an area blocked off for a toad migration (they just started moving a few days ago, and we had to pick our way through them on our way to the relay arena).

I managed to mess up at an area with several mapped trail junctions including a trail I didn't see at first so I was confused, backtracked, then decided I was right the first time, 45-60 seconds lost (or more; I always underestimate my errors). Otherwise fine, though I had to encourage a passing dog not to lift a leg at a control I was about to punch.

COC Long, nominal 3.0km, 60m climb. Black Magic map. Sunny and temps in 70s, but we were in the woods quite a bit.

The course started 410 meters above where we finished on the ski slopes of Blackcomb Mtn, below the Wizard chair.

Control 1 was 85 m (adding:) *of descent* mostly straight downhill through the woods, which were not easy to run or even walk through at that point. I knew it was going to be tricky but I kept on a pretty good compass bearing and watched for the two flatter areas, one just before the control. I think I was just right of the reentrant as I got to the flat and looked around in the wrong direction before returning and finding the flag, so several minutes lost there.

Good on 2, following compass. On 3 got in the general area but thought I was looking for a cliff and not a reentrant, so a couple minutes lost. Straight to 4. Careful down the hill toward 5 looking for the bike trail, but around to the right. Figured out where I was from the v. large cliff on the map and spiked it from there. Then 6 contours practically straight down to a trail. The course had descended about half of the 410m by that point, a third of the way through...all relatively short legs, none longer than 250m or so.

The rest of the course was still tricky but less steep, more across the ski slope than tumbling down the steep woods. Made an error on number 9 misreading woods blobs and finding 10 first, requiring a 20 m climb back up to 9. So likely around 10 or more minutes of error, on 1, 3, and 9.

14th of some higher number, 1st was 47 minutes with 2nd one second behind!

Jogged from our lodging to the start of the sprint (later jogged/walked back from the finish/arena to lodging to change, before heading back to see the results).

Took it slow and easy to see how the knee would do. I'm under the influence of NSAIDs mostly to keep the swelling down, and it's helping with the soreness, at least, though the knee still looks like a goose egg.

This afternoon we'll ride the gondola up Whistler; I'll pick up my HPP fund raiser map but not run it (it's a predict-your-time format, about 2 km course). Then we can take the Peak to Peak gondola to Blackcomb and see the sights.

While Glen ran the course my brother Ed and I took the next lift up to the summit for the fabulous views!!! almost 360 degrees... and then hiked down the road from the top to the lodge. That was also one terminus of the Peak 2 Peak Gondola that goes across the valley to Blackcomb Mtn, which we all took when Ed and I finally reached the lodge.

AOWN: one marmot and one ferret/weasel like creature, maybe a mountain weasel.

COC Middle at One Duck Lake, Whistler, BC. Nominal 1.3k/80m; 1:7500

Not a good day on a format I normally enjoy and do well in. I was fine to the first control, and I navigated well to the second but a few meters away caught a toe and landed such that the middle of my knee impacted a rock under moss. Ouch! Took several dozen seconds to get up. I knew it was going to swell up (tissues under/around the kneecap are not happy) and got a bag of ice at the finish. And I'm icing it now, before we head over to the banquet/BBQ.

A bit rattled after the fall, I took a less than optimum route around on a trail instead of mostly straight to 3, which was a formline reentrant that was mapped half open/half green, and I likely proceeded right by it. 15 minutes later, after spending time down the steep hillside, I got to a control that Ardis was punching (she started 12 minutes behind, and she said she'd messed it up too but not as bad).... Grrrrr.

I was sloppy on the next 3 too, trying not to follow her, then I finally got ahead of Ardis on the way to 7 and did the last two okay, though I stopped to check the code on a box I passed on the way to 7. A slow grind uphill to the finish, passing one woman on the way in.

Well behind where I should have been; 30-31 minutes would have put me in about 9th or 10th of 30 [not 35], instead of 17th.

mbo didn't start today (don't know why); Debbie N was third after Kitty Jones and Barbara Scheck of Canada, all between 23 and 24 minutes.

Edit: only 30 listed in results, including two dns. Turns out Marion sprained her ankle early this morning.

Walked to a few controls on the Middle training map while Glen changed into actual O clothes. It was hot but not too humid, and fairly reasonable in the woods. Found 5 streamers, one of them with a little delay/confusion as I had no compass and the wrong glasses on. Good to see how the white woods vs light and medium green were depicted.

Woods will be slow; F55-64 Middle course tomorrow is 1.26 km.
