Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

At UBC Botanical Garden. Nice shade and big trees. So many rhododendrons and magnolias! Not as many smaller plants as I expected (flowers and such) but it was neat to see the different ways trees bloom and grow.

3 hours total, distance estimated and may be less.

Walking 2:46:59 [1] 3.64 mi (45:52 / mi) +38m 44:26 / mi
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Stanley Park, Vancouver. Will download FR later.

Missed a section (where the track shows a straight line) after we stopped for a restroom break. Parked in the second available large parking lot (paid the full day price), and wandered around the east end of the seawall and into the central portion with rose garden, Aquarium (we didn't go there), etc.

7 PM

Running (paved) (sea wall) 44:05 intensity: (5:35 @1) + (38:30 @3) 5.38 km (8:12 / km)
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Stanley Park, west side from Third Beach around Prospect Point to the first trail jct, and back. [Glen was more adventurous and ran up and down hills.]

Jogging was 4.92 km, 38:30 min; cool down walking was .46 km, 5:35.

Then we stuck our feet in the Pacific (actually, English Bay off the Strait of Georgia).

Hiking 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

On Orcas Island in the San Juans, from parking to the beach at Obstruction Point via one trail and back via another.

We took an early ferry from Anacortes, and drove around the western part to start, and up Mt Constitution on the eastern part before noon. You can hike or drive to the top at 2404'; there are trails from camping at the lake down below or from several other trailheads, but we drove. There's not a ton of parking there so we were lucky to find a spot, and wandered around a bit and climbed the tower there. Good views of Baker and the neighboring islands, and we could see Vancouver and Rainier in the hazy distance as well as (maybe) a shoulder of Vancouver Island. Except for our day in Seattle where it was light drizzle, we've had outstanding weather with clear skies, lows around 55 and highs from 75-80.

Stopped at an overlook on the way down and chatted a bit with a local cycler on his way up, probably about our age, who took a break saying it wasn't as easy to ride up as ten years ago. He's lived on Orcas for 25 years and raised a family here. I didn't think to ask if the kids still live on the island or went elsewhere for employment; not much here beyond construction (his field) and tourist-related jobs. He told us about the beach at Obstruction Point where we'd planned to go anyway, and also about an island microbrewery where we stopped mid-afternoon, Island Hoppin' Brewery. We sampled five beers and didn't have one we didn't like. And he recommended the restaurant where we ate dinner, Olga's Cafe (Olga is actually a town and the cafe used to be there instead of Eastsound where they relocated after a fire, though it might be a temporary move).

Our conversation was interrupted when another car joined us at the overlook and he recognized it as his sister's. We said goodbye as he was being introduced to her friends. Nice chat, and good to get a local opinion.

Hiking 1:30:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (50:00 @2) 5.8 km (15:31 / km)
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Thunder Knob hike, North Cascades NP. Up the steady climb with switchbacks to viewpoints over Lake Diablo (one in a chain of dammed lakes on the Skagit used for hydropower). Temp near 80 and sunny for a longer portion than I expected, and it took a lot out of me.

As we started up the trail it crossed the outflow of the Colonial Creek. A ranger nearby pointed out a picnic table underwater, wedged near a tree, and said the creek had changed course in 2003, creating a new bed. Picnic table looked really good for having been 11 years under the creek water!

We did another short hike to a skinny but relatively high waterfall near the lowest power station, Ladder Creek Falls.

Hard to stay focused on the ~1 hour drive back to the motel due to tiredness.

Note

AOWN note for today... saw 4 eagles (1 of which was a juvenile, snacking on something on the shore at low tide), a few harbor seals, and one Dreamlifter flying, headed west! Also saw both a Rainier and a Baker, and possibly an Olympus.

Walking 1:30:00 [1] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi)

Seattle downtown! Pike Place Market, then south to Pioneer Square, north to Seattle Center (where the Space Needle is, though we didn't go up in it) and a bit more around Pike Place after we took the monorail back from Center. Time is an estimate.

Pilates class 55:00 [2]

Weights (and body weight). Hard to take deep breaths due to allergies that hit me as soon as I stepped out of the house. Good, tough session.

Pulldowns (10) and adductors (20@75#)

Monday Jul 21, 2014 #

Exerc. Class 50:00 [1]

Aerobics, step, and abs.
4 PM

Running (dirt) 24:20 [3] 1.68 mi (14:32 / mi) +42m 13:29 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Went to Hand Hollow to jog on the trails there. Only fell once, no damage. Ran a bit shorter than originally planned as Glen had aborted his run and I didn't want to hold him up too much. I suppose I should do runs like this more often.

Walking 59:37 [3] 5.81 km (10:15 / km) +121m 9:17 / km

The "north block" plus a bit. Overcast and mid 70s with just a touch of humidity -- overall quite nice for walking.

Pulled a few weeds in the back yard after. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Pilates class 55:00 [2]

Weights, which were plenty hard without any other tools.

Plus pulldowns and leg presses. No adductors needed as we did plenty in class.

"Weird Al" defends good grammar. (I don't agree with his view on Oxford commas, but otherwise, all is good.)

We used the rings today, so lunges were involved. I like the way Mary does them better than Connie's way (no movement except up and down... that is, no stepping into the lunge). There were other moves too, but lunges are the hardest for me.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 27:00 intensity: (2:00 @1) + (25:00 @3)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Hill interval level 3, 1.22 total distance units. The fellow on the machine next to me had his set on a resistance of 30 (mine alternated) and his heart rate registered between 185-190!

Pulldowns (10 @ 68.75#) and 2 sets adductors @75#

Note

Like the Prius, only better? (And much more expensive. And can't do 400 mile trips without re-"fueling".)
11 AM

Running (dirt) (and walking) 1:02:15 intensity: (40:00 @3) + (22:15 @4) 4.14 mi (15:03 / mi) +112m 13:53 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

South "block" from home, walking on the paved portion (3.97 km) and jogging on the "dirt" roads with a few walking breaks (2.69 km).

It was mid 70s when I left and overcast with a nice breeze, but both the temperature and seemingly the humidity rose while I was out, making it quite uncomfortable; 78 when I returned. Had to keep wiping sweaty eyelids with sweaty fingers so I didn't get blinded by the stinging salt water. :-)

A couple creaks from the ankles as I got started, but otherwise good; and I preemptively taped my right foot, so all was well with no pains. Super-glad when I was done.

Pilates class 55:00 [2]
slept:7.0

Using bands. Lots of outer thigh torture today. Mary noticed I wasn't kneeling for some exercises, and offered modifications for me to stay off it. (I've done things standing, but did the moves for back lying on my stomach.) I thanked her after class. :-)

Should be healed enough by next week, but for now the abrasion is still oozing a bit.

Did some pulldowns (9), leg presses (while waiting for the adductor machine), and adductors (2*12@80) after.
3 PM

Running (dirt) ( / hiking) 57:29 [3] * 2.58 mi (22:19 / mi) +147m 18:57 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Jogged / hiked at Beebe Hill State Forest near Austerlitz. Absolutely gorgeous day with temps in the low 70s (76F at home; 71F 20 minutes away and at a slightly higher elevation) and low humidity with quite clear skies.

I took the topo map that shows the main trails in the park (but not all the MTB trails), so I wouldn't get misdirected looking for the fire tower which was still a bit hidden by trees when I got to the peak.

Started on the MTB trail, along the stream that drains Barrett Pond, only slightly confused by its twists and turns, then headed up the hill to the fire tower. Jogged where it was flatter and hiked where it wasn't.

Approx. 30 minutes up; 5 minutes at the fire tower; 21 minutes down. I left my watch turned on for the fire tower climb, and I only went up 63 of the 81 steps which brought me above the treetops (mostly hardwoods like oaks and maples). I didn't note the windmills at Brodie Mtn that Glen saw but did pick out Albany, the Catskills (forgot to check for Olana to the west), Catamount Ski Area, etc.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
slept:5.5

Nice workout; I could feel areas I had worked yesterday in Pilates (hips, glutes, triceps). Will try to get more sleep tonight.

Tuesday Jul 8, 2014 #

Note

A prolific 45-minutes' work for two of us, in the treeline around our yard and back field. Glen found the red raspberries! About 1.5 qts worth. More to come as there are about as many unripe ones still on the vines.
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [2]
slept:7.5

Using weights for some of the exercises (adductors plus chest and arms). I had to modify anything on hands and knees as my skinned knee from yesterday has not yet healed enough.

Pulldowns after (9 @ 68.75#) and more hip stretching.

Strolled at the Peninsula with G&S and Owen in the stroller (mom pushing). Watch logged over an hour, but we were standing around part of that time and I forgot to stop the watch then, so I deducted some time.

After the front passed through yesterday, and T.S. Arthur moved off to Cape Cod, it was cool last night (in the 60s) and low to mid 70s today with a lovely north breeze - fantastic! Owen loved the breeze coming across his stroller, and wore his new beach hat from his other grandma.

Note

Rehoboth: 15 minutes walking on the beach, then 10 minutes in the water. Tide was coming in with a strong breeze from the south (in advance of TS Arthur) and approaching high tide made for some interesting dynamics and we didn't want to fight the current for long. Difficult to get out of the water as it kept pulling me back and I don't have the hill climbing legs that some do...

Pilates class 55:00 [2]

Exercise balls. Lots of lower body stuff with the ball and some upper body too including a few weight moves. Nothing stressful for the shoulder today (no push-ups!)

10 pulldowns plus extra hip stretching in anticipation of sitting for hours in the car.
