To the PO to mail the club recharter form and check due today (oops). :-)
38 and breezy; getting colder

Wednesday Jan 30, 2013 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

It was warm! And humid! Felt like mid-summer, not the end of January. (48F at class time)

Walking (indoor track) 9:36 [2] 0.67 mi (14:20 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Arrived at Y early and had time for a warm-up speedwalk on the track. Several other Pilates class members were also there.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

With rings. Lunges were hard; left hamstring couldn't do all the repeats but right leg was okay with them. Left knee has been bothersome too but I suspect that will pass in a fee days. Keep stretching!
11 AM

Walking (indoor track) 19:12 [2] 1.33 mi (14:26 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

To make an even two miles (added on to the 2/3 mile before class), pushing the pace and passing a number of other walkers. There was even an older gentleman jogging who was trying his darnedest to keep ahead of me (ie, wouldn't let me walk past him). Good that I was able to inspire someone. ;-)

Proud of the fact that I actually showed up and competed. Think it's the coldest ambient temperature I've run in (about 14 F).

Had to walk most of the uphills, as usual. But I used the long road downhill (last 1.3 mi, give or take) to my advantage and caught/passed two women I'd been behind on the climb.

Snowshoe race 1:21:05 [4] 4.93 mi (16:27 / mi) +292m 13:54 / mi
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Trail NB 704 shoes

Curly's "alternate course" snowshoe race in Pittsfield State Forest. Temp read 12F at the start; about 19 when we left the park. Sunny skies and just a bit of breeze near the top of the mountain. This was a "climb to the top of the mountain and then run back down" race, as you can likely see from my track.

Trail up was the ziggy-zaggy Turner Trail which really took out a lot of the steep and even had fairly flat sections which I jogged as much as possible. Once we reached near the top I recognized things as I'd done a hike here last summer starting from Berry Hill (which we climbed up and around). From the Taconic Crest Trail north we then turned down the William Berry Way trail which brought us to the uphill drive that we then ran down in to the finish. I knew I could stretch my legs out more on the downhill, and discovered that if I ran in the less-traveled part of the road I could actually grip a little better and run just a bit faster; that's how I was able to pass the two women I'd followed up the Turner Trail. Felt good to run downhill, though my right hip flexor was starting to tighten up.

Also racing today: pbricker and oeo2oo (who was accompanied by Colette who didn't run the race).

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Weights. Planks and other moves started to make my shoulder/neck tingle.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 20:00 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

0.91 mi. Stopped at 20 min because my right shoulder was sore from Pilates and distracting, despite trying to keep it stable by holding on to my shirt.

Walking (indoor track) 29:40 [3] 2.0 mi (14:50 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

So I took to the track which somehow was easier on the shoulder. An even 14:50 per mile.

Similar "program" as Monday but smaller crowd. :-) Broke a sweat, even, which is rare.

Note
slept:7.0

Weight is going nowhere.

On a separate note, I started taking pseudoephedrine yesterday (after days of no progress with phenylephrine or antihistamine) and sense some pressure differences (clicking, some popping) in my stuffed-up ear--progress??
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using balls, my favorite. (Love roll-ups with feet on the ball!)

Running (treadmill) (and walking) 50:00 intensity: (4:15 @1) + (25:12 @2) + (20:33 @3) 3.75 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Started with a jog, 1.25mi; then walked 1.75mi. Jogged a bit more, 0.5mi, then cooled down walking, 0.25mi. Wanted to jog the whole thing but certain muscles weren't always happy and I don't need to break anything.

Big class again, as folks had the day off from work. Continuous motion for 29 minutes ("Eve's workout").

Decided to obtain some pseudoephedrine to see if it does anything to relieve my ear problem. Not much noticeable change so far.

Walking 26:00 [2]

To the PO to mail a birthday card. Cold wind on the way back cut through my scarf.

Day 5 of an annoying plugged ear. Faulty eustachian tube, a problem I've had before. Don't remember if I had to resort to antibiotics the other times, but so far decongestants aren't having any effect.

Running (dirt) race (trail) 45:36 [4] 5.03 km (9:04 / km) +146m 7:55 / km
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Brave the Blizzard, put on by Albany Running Exchange (ARE), was again declared a non-snowshoe race. This is the second year it's been held on the grounds/trails of the Robert C. Parker School in West Sand Lake/Averill Park.

Like last year (when there were just a couple of inches of snow on the ground, with snow falling as we raced), I wore orienteering shoes because of the spikes which provided much more secure footing than the (more comfortable) trail shoes that I own (and use with snowshoes). People with Icebugs used them; some folks used YakTraks or Microspikes.

Start was run across a field, then head down a short hill into the woods. I was well behind most of the pack across the field, but on reaching the patch of snow just past the first drop I was able to pass a couple of timid people. Hills, of course, slowed me down, but I managed to get jogging/running on almost all of the flats and downhills. One steep climb we got to do twice, as this is a double-loop course. As I finished the first loop and crossed the field to get to the snow patch again, I heard them announce the first finisher, at 22:48. Around twice the winner's time is my usual place at road and trail races.

Back and forth with one woman from the 2nd-loop steep climb on in, but she was able to outkick me at the finish to finish one second ahead. Finished 51/58, 4th of the 4 women in 50-59 (19/24 women overall).

We got to run under paper snowflakes hanging from trees (near the top of the steep climb), and climb through a bungee "spiderweb". :-)

Snowshoe race 1:03:06 [4] 5.94 km (10:37 / km) +204m 9:04 / km
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

NB 706 #2 shoes

Fog on the mountain for atmosphere (you could see it swirling in front of you before the start), and temperature rising through the upper 30s for this race. This was the first time I've raced Constitution Hill (the 2nd running, I think; last year was really cold), which is located in Lanesboro, MA, a few miles east of Jiminy Peak (a ridge or two over) which we drove by on the way there. We should come back sometime in the summer to hike/run the trails.

Race start is down a gentle slope at the edge of open meadows and then back up again, then it's off into the woods where it's part single-track; part snowmobile trail. Snow was 4-6" deep but pretty packed (and/or soggy) by the time I got to where the leaders had been. Positioned myself pretty well in the meadow run such that only a few people passed me heading out from there, and there were one or two flip/flop situations in the woods. I can lengthen my stride on downhills, especially in the softer, more forgiving snow, and I made up some time there, but once to the hills I had to walk, and the steepest hill (short but steep! at around 4.2 km) was where Julie G passed me for good. [She was the one I finished just ahead of last week.] The last km or so was downhill off Constitution Hill and I was able to gain on Julie but never caught her as she had some momentum too. :-) And I got ahead of Jamie H this week only because he stopped to take pictures on the way down Constitution Hill near the end.

No results yet.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using just weights. We did a few moves we hadn't done in awhile including chair sits and leg circles from a shoulder bridge. Good stuff, though I think there was too much planking and I'll pay for it later.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 8:36 [3] 0.75 mi (11:28 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Warmed up for intervals. Sports Center on the closest TV was very boring but at least I wasn't there long.

Running (track) intervals (indoor) 12:40 intensity: (6:19 @2) + (6:21 @4) 1.01 mi (12:33 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Clockwise.
Sad. This is the slowest I've done these intervals in memory, but I couldn't get myself to move any faster. Only 3x345m, too (230m walk in between). 2:08, 2:05, 2:08. Target is 2:00-2:02 per interval.

Running (track) warm up/down 5:57 [2] 0.5 mi (11:54 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Walking warm up/down (indoor track) 4:01 [2] 0.25 mi (16:05 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

The rest of the cool down.

Hill interval level 3, 1.6 mi. Mhr around 130 according to the display. Planned to go longer but quads rebelled at around 34 minutes so switched machine to cool down mode (which I just discovered today), 2 more minutes and done.

Adductors (75 & 70#), and 9 pulldowns

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Back to this class; new session. Included stepping today, and a bit of weights. Quads are getting a little less sore.

Glen ordered a Stick as part of a Christmas gift from the kids; he got the travel size so we can take it on O trips. I tried it on my quads. :-)

Snowshoe warm up/down 5:00 [3]
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Not sure of time/distance, but went up the road a bit from the start, as far as the first turn off, to see how I'd do on the hills. Had to walk them even in the warmup, so I didn't have high expectations for much else during the race. Probably not enough warm up, but all wanted to do.

Saw Phil B warming up on the road too.

NB Trail 706 #2, gaiters

Knew the first uphill section would be a slog, which it was. The downhill on the twisty turny bike trail was fun (and I passed someone here, who kindly stepped aside when she heard me gaining on her). Then it was another couple miles of gentle, mostly flat bike trails after crossing the main road. That part was the hardest, actually, since I haven't really trained the longer distance/time. And snowshoes make it harder to pick up your feet when you're tired, but I never fell even though I caught the tips a couple of times. One GU, about 40 minutes in (about half-way), and some water I carried with me.

Before the start someone was looking at my gaiter/shoe setup, and showed me his NB WT110W (winter running shoe with a built in front cover). They looked pretty neat. He then realized I wasn't who he thought I was (someone he'd spoken to earlier). I get that a lot. :-)

Super nice day, partly sunny and low 30s; a bit of a breeze around the pond/lake in the lower section. Glad I went.

shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

(Trail NB 704 shoes)
Powell Bird Sanctuary in Old Chatham, while Glen ran trails there. With the hills there that are hard enough to run without the snow, I figured I'd just hike, and that was challenging enough. Went off trail where I didn't see the regular trail, but knew which direction to head to get to the main trail (we've been here, oh, just a few times. :-) It's small and I basically have the topo map memorized).

No one there when we arrived, but 2 more cars when we finished (and a third arrived as we were about to leave). About 28F and overcast, with a slight breeze.
