10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Used rings, so we did lunges as well as other nice hip exercises. Instructor doesn't really like using the ring so we only do it about once a month.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 40:00 [2]
slept:8.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

First 20 minutes I didn't have a level set so did whatever came up; second 20 minutes was at level 3. 1.85 mi

Note

Enjoying birthday ice cream (I know, really bad) in honor of my younger son's birthday tomorrow.

Pilates class 55:00 [0]

No tools. One of the moves (half pushup with one leg extended, elbows pointed back instead of out) bothered my left knee (kneecap didn't like it) so I did them without the leg extensions. Shoulder still complained.
11 AM

Walking (indoor track) 28:31 [2] 2.0 mi (14:15 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Easy day, did two miles on track at the Y; much, much cooler than outside where it's still 89 but not storming here (yet) at almost 4pm. 14:06 and 14:25 miles, stopping to stretch in between because various muscles were complaining.
9 PM

Note

Added QR images for the Saturday events to their entries.

My QR for Farsta Medium H-A:

From WesternMass5Day2012

29/32 overall; 8/11 women (including one M/F team)
I figured I'd finish in about 2 hours or so, considering the heat and the climb, and I was pretty close.

Orienteering race (Long) 2:08:01 [3] **** 8.4 km (15:15 / km) +375m 12:28 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

"Medium" mass start Farsta at Mt. Tom, starting at the pavilion at the top of the hill. (Short had a couple of butterfly wings; Medium and Long had a map exchange at the pavilion). Both legs of the Farsta went east into the gnarly hilly section between the main park road (E-W) and the (closed) road to Mt. Nonotuck to the NE. Glen and I both happened to have the same forkings (H then A), so it was easy to compare splits. :-)

I had people around to most of the controls (either going in or coming out) but I was pretty much on my navigation again. I think that was partly due to taking safer routes sometimes (using trails) rather than going straight. Only real problem was at the depression, #45; I crossed the ride and came up the reentrant but didn't go quite far enough and wandered a bit just outside the circle until I identified the ditch to the west of the depression and knew which way to go.

From S/F to the saddle, #31, I took the trail of the east side of the large clearing where the Mt. Tom Billygoat started and then contoured around after climbing past the spur east of the trail. Sandy and others took the road route which was longer but a much gentler climb -- I never saw that as an option, though. I did take the road back from the depression to the pond, and enjoyed the mostly downhill jog. I walked most of the rest, though, except on flat trails or on downhills.

Brown Y 1 at Earl's Trails, Hadley/Amherst MA (near Mt. Norwottuck)
Very nice course, very nice map, and the first race didn't take us into too much of the "green" which really wasn't so bad even on the second race. I went a little out of the way to 5, and a bit more out of the way to 8 but spiked it, so all is good.

I'll start logging actual distance covered (reported on my FR) to make the "mileage" on my shoes more correct (I had been logging straight line, to calculate racing minutes/km).

Brown Y 2, on a different section of Earl's Trails, with the same finish, and start close to the first race. Again, no trouble with the navigation; found everything where I expected it to be. It's so nice to have back to back events with no mistakes. :-)

Reported SL = 2.33 km, 120 m climb

Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:50 [4] *** 2.47 km (8:26 / km) +2m 8:24 / km
spiked:9/10c shoes: Trail NB 705 8.5D

"Short" sprint at UMass Amherst. Tired from the earlier events; would have been a bit faster if fresh, but most everyone was in the same boat. Took the left route around the building from 2-3; probably not much different from going right. Lost a minute(?) at 7; started the right way but then had to take another look above the tennis courts before going back the staircase I originally intended to. I think I helped Glen here (he punched right behind, having started 5 minutes behind me). Fun course and map!

Advertised SL = 1.7 km, 50m climb (with staircases, which the AP correction doesn't see?).

Note
(rest day)

With all the events scheduled for the weekend (I'm registered for 4 of the 5, skipping the sprint at CH Sunday morning, since I've sprinted there), I felt no need to do anything at all today. Need to save up my energy, especially considering the hot weather we're supposed to have on Saturday. :-)

Pilates class 55:00 [1]
slept:8.0

Used elastic bands. This class and Tuesday's were on the small side--holiday week vacations? College graduations? Didn't have to struggle to find a spot, anyway.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

2.02 mi; no HR readings today for some reason. Could feel quads (esp. right one) after about 30 minutes, but persevered.

Adductors 2x12 at 70#; 10 at 68.75# pulldowns, since the 12 @ 62.5 were getting easy (movin' up; added a half plate). Yay, progress. Still no way I could ever do a real pullup, though.

Since I took Sunday and Monday off I figured I'd be able to do intervals today. Felt pretty good, though 4 were enough for me today. Quads just a bit tired/sore now.

1:58, 2:00, 1:59, 2:02 (2:01 target), with walking rests between 2:00 and 2:17

Advanced course at Saratoga Spa, 1:10,000, 3m contours

Super fun and super weather, ~70, sunny and dry. Only really botched one control (5) not finding the right trail that would have gone straight to it. Lost several minutes bouncing around. Especially liked the butterfly/box in the flat pine wooded area. Many thanks to the EMPO volunteers.

UPDATED with FR track; 6.182 km, 81m climb reported by FR / AP, probably about right.

Using exercise balls. I think I'll feel the leg extensions (legs around the ball like tweezers and then you lower legs from upright as far as your back allows) tomorrow. Everything else was good.

Note

Frustrating to read other's logs when they refer to neat stuff on their track--but don't share the map except with "friends"--even for public locales (I do understand keeping your home location available to limited viewers).

Just spent the last 15 minutes doing detective work to satisfy my curiosity.

Check out the satellite view of this park, if you're interested (can't post the link from iPod--too complicated to copy it):

No energy this time, still sore from the weekend with tight quads. Stretching should help some. This slower recovery is the pits.

Orienteering race 1:23:17 [4] *** 4.5 km (18:30 / km) +145m 15:56 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Green course at Rocky Woods, usually known as "tick central" but I haven't noticed any yet (yay!). Hope I don't find any strays. Didn't need a longer course after the race yesterday, and I could feel my legs so took it slow through the thick woods. Only had a problem with one control (a boulder in an area with a lot of smaller unmapped ones...). Nice course by Jeff S. (and a 1:10000 map!).

EDIT: FR = 5.915 km covered, 145m climb

From Start/Finish two lines headed vaguely toward the north, one just east of the North line, and the other NNW at about 15-20 degrees. Started navigating toward the eastern one, but it turns out that was towards 11, not 1, but that's the route I wanted to take anyway (1 was a long leg). :-) Getting used to the mapping on the way to 1, thought it took me until about 9 or 10 until I thought I understood the mapping style (rock VERY generalized with some considerable-sized boulders not there and some others perhaps undersized). Base from an older 1:15000 version done years ago, with more recent updates by Jeff. A work in progress... Visibility is low in may areas due to small pine saplings blocking the view.

A bit off/uncertain to 2, but heading generally in the right direction; should have just pounded out to the trail and then found the form-line hill. Didn't go far enough to 3 and turned around to relocate. To 6 I think I climbed a hill too early, but found the point okay. 7 was in a reentrant that was full of pine saplings; I was standing 8-10 m away but couldn't see the flag. Saw someone off to my left so checked that way and there it was. Fine day, not too lost, and slowish because of sore legs and warm temps (low-mid 80s?). A lovely way to spend Mother's Day!

Running (dirt) warm up/down (gravel path) 8:53 [3] 0.84 mi (10:32 / mi) +1m 10:30 / mi
slept:6.5

Warmed up around first loop of the "trail" race at Halfmoon town park. The gravel path was a pretty nice surface to run on; not dirt, not paved. Gorgeous weather, bright and sunny with temps in low 60s to start. This is a fundraiser for Mother Theresa Academy which we happened to see in the local road running magazine. Maybe others are saving themselves for the Mother's Day 5k in Schenectady tomorrow? :-)

Added FR track.
Shoes = older NB 704s (which they haven't made for years) that I dug out of my closet that are in better shape than the 706s that I currently use.

Running (dirt) race 31:01 [5] 4.99 km (6:13 / km) +5m 6:11 / km

Very happy with my time; wasn't sure I had 10:00/mi pace in me still, but I guess the occasional intervals helped. Also helps that the course was basically flat with a good surface. No hills to fight. :-).

2 of 3 F51-60, 38 of 67 overall; fastest time was relatively slow, 18:38

Added FR track.
Race time temp was probably mid 60s. The day warmed up to over 80 by mid-afternoon; about 78 when we left the park around 11:30.

10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using elastic bands (the wide, flat kind). I did a bit of extra stretching before warmup, as I tweaked my back a little at exercise class yesterday, which made it hard to sleep on one side last night. Felt better after class though, so that was the right thing to do.
11 AM

Walking (treadmill) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Didn't want to do anything too stressful because my back was still a bit tight, so just a bit of walking at low incline (no more than 2.5%).

Adductors, pulldowns, and some leg presses.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

"Eve's 5-5-5 workout": Step, aerobics, weights, stretching.

Walking 26:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

Time an estimate. Walked to the P.O. to mail a couple of things, and then as far as the creek to see the water level (a bit higher than it has been, with 1"+ of rain the past couple of days), then back home. 1.5 mi

Note

Saw Air Force 1 (on TV) land in Albany about 11:48 am. Couldn't actually see the plane until it was practically on the ground because of fog, but the cameras were tracking it as it came in. President is visiting the NanoCollege. Pilates instructor's husband in the FBI locally and expects to meet president.
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

No tools today. Right hip tight and twingy. Back of left heel got a prickly feeling during planks/stretching, so something to watch. Didn't think I'd enjoy running or elliptical so opted to do a short erg instead plus my strength/PT machines.

11 AM

Fitness equipment (erging) 7:38 [2]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

1500m, next to an older fellow who did a bit less (about 7min, 1300+m). Worked up a sweat by the end, thus the intensity of 2.

He walks with a hunched back so probably doesn't get the full ROM.

Adductors, pulldowns, leg presses

Brown Long on Turkey Mountain map, from Camp Shea on Mine Torne Rd. Happy with my navigation for the most part except close to controls (1, 2, 5, 8, 9). Kept close of track of where I was in the two long legs (just messed up in/near the circle). Sloppy route choice to 6 and 7 but found them okay. A long day and tired legs now. Good to see everyone!

Stopped for Frappuccinos and a rest, then later for beer and sandwiches at Keegan Ale in Kingston. Detoured to Ravena to check out a park (Joralemon Town Park) Jim H told me about at today's start with an extensive frisbee golf course and neat wildflowers. Nice setting with lots of limestone outcrops, so if you're into that, and near Albany, it's a neat place (even though it says "town residents and guests only" ... they probably don't check if it's not really busy, especially if you're not using the pavilion, though out-of-state license plates might be suspect).

And ended with ice cream cones from Friendly's. Back to the real diet tomorrow. :-)

I bobbled a bit in the circle because I was still getting into the mapping, but wasn't too far off. Two was a longer leg and I was high going over the hill and had to correct (had intended to contour south but veg was a little thicker than depicted). Slow and steady to the rest.

Note

Where I went yesterday (track starts at the 4-way trail jct). I jogged some on the trail between 11 and 5L, but not much otherwise as I was loaded down a bit more than I would have been during the Billygoat.

Had trouble, again (as during vetting), with the downed trees in the big reentrant leading up to 6.

Good class using bands. The band I purchased at Target broke (about 4" off the end). It was already too short. Not recommended. Legs tired after so only did pulldowns and adductors.
