Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Quads tight but not really sore from snowshoe yesterday which is welcome. Did a few extra stretches at the end of class which is always nice for loosening up.

Now to shop and bring in more firewood before the next snowstorm...

Snowshoe race 1:21:40 [4] 3.64 mi (22:25 / mi) +329m 17:31 / mi
rhr:50 shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Curly's Record Run in Pittsfield, MA. After standing around a bit we were finally off. I got myself into the right spot pace-wise on the first field crossing; didn't let anyone (Bill G.) pass me; passed a few folks who pulled over. I knew it was going to be a slog up the mountain but the snow was nice enough that the run down 'Curly's run' was a lot of fun. I used downhill ski knowledge (and my Pilates-trained core) to keep me upright.

Not sure of results yet; 1st place was finished the race before I reached the top!

Will upload FR when I get home. Saw Clint there and spoke briefly to Phil B.

EDIT: added FR track. Upper body sore from keeping myself balanced, I think. And I'll feel the quads tomorrow...
3 PM

Note

Wandered on down to the Bye Bye O at Stratton Brook. I didn't pack O stuff because I didn't think I'd want to go out after the snowshoe. Glen's calf cramped before the snowshoe race, so he didn't do the O either. But we got there as they were finishing up and chatted to a few people before heading to the goodbye chili at Maple Tree Cafe in Simsbury to send off the Grollmans who are returning to Switzerland next month. Sad to see them go; Peter G is a great course setter and was a nice resource for WCOC.

Sat with Craig W., and his wife who's also a quilter. She had brought a quilter friend and they visited the Simsbury quilt shop while Craig orienteered. She had a quilt (the first one on this page) in the Northern Star Quilt show (in Somers, NY) that won a best of show award last year! Fun.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using bands. Good workout for the thighs among other things.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) 25:15 intensity: (9:30 @3) + (15:45 @4) 2.3 mi (10:59 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Warm up and tempo half miles interspersed with (fast) walking breaks. Tempo segments were at 5:12, 5:20, and 5:13.

Walking (treadmill) 15:35 intensity: (4:30 @1) + (11:05 @2) 1.0 mi (15:35 / mi)

The in-between quarter-mile segments (3:53, 3:30 & 3:42) plus cool down, 4:30.

Exerc. Class 50:00 [1]

Started a bit late (as usual) with a 15 minutes warmup (I think she gets carried away), but then redeemed with a 15 minutes step and weight series in addition to the typical aerobics bit.
4 PM

Snowshoe 41:43 [2] 1.19 mi (35:03 / mi) +32m 32:21 / mi

Snowshoe in fields out back, breaking trail. Did full field loop, then went back and just circled the closer field.

Took XC ski poles so I wouldn't fall down, in case the crust (under about 4" of fluffy stuff) caught my snowshoes. The left one just slid on the surface of the crust; the right one usually poked in -- don't know what's up there, whether the point is not pointy or my left arm is just weird. It's not like the snow was that much different from one side of me to the other. ;-)

10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]
rhr:54 slept:7.5

At the Y using weights as our extra tool.

Learned that all classes before noon will be canceled if the local school district cancels or has a 2-hr delay. The policy used to be classes before 9 am were canceled. They said it was to be more in line with other area Y's. I think there are teachers who perhaps live outside the area who don't want to have to travel if it's messy. Mary, the Pilates instructor, lives close by and doesn't really agree with the change but has to live with it.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 8:47 [3] 0.75 mi (11:43 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Warming up for intervals (which I'll post later).

Running (track) intervals 17:10 intensity: (9:12 @2) + (7:58 @4) 1.42 mi (12:05 / mi)
max:162 shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Indoor track at the Y. The last interval didn't feel too bad but I didn't want to push it and do a fifth.
Took my pulse after I finished the 4th hard interval (before walking).
4 x 345 with ~230m rests
201 (202)
200 (204)
158 (220)
159 (246, including taking pulse)

Walking warm up/down 8:06 [1] 0.5 mi (16:12 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

On the track, including some sidestepping ("weave") and backwards walking in the final lap (~7.25 laps to a half-mile).

Warm workout in cold Chatham.

Didn't snowshoe race in Pittsfield yesterday because of cold. Stayed inside the entire weekend. Bring back the 20's! ;-)

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Hurray--I was able to get out to the Y, where we used the large fitness balls for some exercises. "Hiked" hills on the treadmill, too, which I'll log later.
More snow tomorrow (forecast says 4-8" for us).
11 AM

Walking 22:30 [2] 1.35 mi (16:40 / mi)

Walked to the P.O. again, this time to mail bills and cards.

Then shoveled up some of the snow-ice-snow sandwich in front of the house, at least what I could get loose. Since this side of the house faces north we don't get the advantage of the sun (when it's out). Started snowing lightly again while I shoveled. Bleah.

Walking 23:00 [2] 1.35 mi (17:02 / mi)
rhr:57

Walked to PO to see if they weren't delivering because of the sleet/messy roads, but delivery person was just leaving on rounds, so walked back to mailbox and back home.
11 AM

Other (Core DVD) 32 [1]

Did many of the crunches, none of the side planks, and modified the other exercises to my level. Didn't want to try the roads due to sleet/freezing rain, so this was next best choice.

Followed with about 5-7 minutes of stepping until I got bored.

Surprised by weight this morning, but yesterday's weight could have been water-related (post racing).

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Aerobics, stepping, strength, stretching... what more could you want?

Note

fpb sent me this photo, taken of me about half-way through the race (thanks for standing out in the wind, Frank!)

From Miscellaneous

Added: The Schenectady Gazette posted a whole bunch of pictures (including the one Glen included in his log). I'm here, towards the left in red top and black pants. :-) And I think I'm also here. This far back in the pack you had to wait in line to get up the narrow track.
9 AM

Running (paved) warm up/down 5:31 [2] 0.43 mi (12:41 / mi) +2m 12:30 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Jogged around the parking lot, about 20 minutes before snowshoe race started. Someone mentioned there were more than 200 runners registered--impressive! Then took clothes to change into to leave in the school gymnasium, like many others. ;/)

Snowshoe race 1:10:17 [4] 4.17 mi (16:51 / mi) +52m 16:14 / mi
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

And we're off! First a jog around the field trying to spread runners out; but when you're slow like me you still end up behind a few. Time to be patient--trail will open up at some point. Temp was almost ideal, at around 28, not warm enough to melt the snow but warm enough to be comfortable. Settled in to a spot where I only switched places a few times with people and ended up not having to race anyone in at the finish. Didn't quite make 70 minutes. Counted 3 other 55-59 ahead of me (and a 63 year old who usually beats me).

165/202, a nice placing for me. I think there were a lot of newbie snowshoe racers out today. APer fpb was a course marshall and snapped my picture. CMorse did well, finishing 15th; Glen was 44th, about 15 min behind the leader (whereas I was more than twice the leader's time...I think I was about twice the woman leader's time...).

Note

Glen figures the straight-line distance on my route at 4.9 km.

Navigation was yellow/orange level, and the map was familiar so I barely had to use my compass (which developed 4 bubbles due to the cold, by the way! Good thing I didn't need to rely on it.). I also pinned my e-punch to my jacket since I was wearing Gore-tex overmitts that didn't allow me to wear it as usual.
10 AM

Orienteering race (snowshoe) 1:38:19 [3] ***
spiked:13/14c shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Snowshoe score O at Moreau Lake. Possible 23 controls, 2-hour time limit. Snowshoes slow me down so I didn't figure on getting them all anyway (Glen did). Did a counterclockwise loop around the main lake. Forgot to carry FR from the car to start so went with just my Timex. Managed to turn it off between the 11th and 12th controls I visited and I didn't know what time-of-day I started, so hustled back in only picking up two more which were on the way. A lot of folks on skis for the ski-O (ESG qualifier), not all that many on snowshoes.

Temp on my car said 0F when we left home; 8F when we arrived at the park. By the time I finished it had started snowing lightly; the car thermometer said about 23 when we left. Managed to keep my feet and hands warm enough. Good clothing test for tomorrow's snowshoe race.

Two events this weekend, so nothing today.

Hope I don't freeze off any fingers or toes...

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using weights.

Funny how a side plank on my good shoulder/side still bothers my other shoulder/neck. Oh well, no more side planks.

Fellow on the next bike complained that his biking 'history' had been lost. Guess mine had been too, but I'd only done this twice before. No big deal for me.

Shoveling (strength) 20:00 [1]

Shoveling a path up the drive and shoveling out the mailboxes at the end of the road. 0.3 mi round trip to the boxes. Snow was generally pretty light/fluffy; a little stiffer where it had been plowed, and a little more where they were replowing salted snow.

Tuesday Jan 11, 2011 #

Note

No time for the Y today--had to deliver my son's backpack halfway to college (he met me partway and we had lunch together). He remembered his laundry, pet rabbit and supplies, etc... but when he went looking for his computer, realized his backpack was still sitting at home.

Took the opportunity to shop at nearby Woodbury outlets for a few kitchen items. Maybe I'll try the core DVD again while snowed in tomorrow...

10-10-10 workout today. Legs not as tight today as I thought they might be considering how tired they were Saturday. But stretching felt good, especially hamstrings for some reason.

rhr:57 shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Trail NB 706 #2

Based on lack of snow earlier in the week the Turner Trail wasn't used; the race was instead re-routed over mt-bike trails in Pittsfield State Forest, so there were a LOT of twists and turns and places where you could see folks ahead of you (and behind, though there weren't very many behind me).

Glen said there were about 61 starters. I was a bit slower than '50% longer than his time' which is often my pace. I haven't been running all that much lately, and especially not with snowshoes on, which adds a new dimension (and more resistance to lifting your feet). Hips and legs (and lower back) are stiff and sore; I've been stretching and have taken appropriate anti-inflammatories. We'll see if I can walk tomorrow. ;-)

Results, when they have them, will be linked from here.
EDIT: They're also here. I was 57/62 and 19/22 women. More people behind me than I thought. ;-)

Note

The course went gently downhill the first half, then uphill the second half, except for the last little bit. I could jog most of the flats (and all the downhills) during the first half, but walked all of the uphills and some of the flats in the second half of the race.

Thursday Jan 6, 2011 #

Note

AOWN note from yesterday--saw a flock of at least two dozen turkeys crossing a road a few miles from home. Slowed down so as not to hit the ones who had yet to cross (and had the presence of mind to yield ;-) ).
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using elastic bands. These are disappearing too, like the mats. Maybe I'll need to write a letter... For $50/mo I shouldn't have to supply my own mat too (when they have a supply).

4 x 345m (3 laps) with walking in between.
Running: 1:56, 2:02, 2:00, 2:01

Walking includes 1/2 mi cooldown (plus time to clean up small puddles from apparent ceiling leaks...)
3:00 stretching making sure to stretch hams and hip flexors

At the Y; no tools, and barely enough mats.

Followed by running/walking on treadmill which I'll add later.

Weight's going in the wrong direction. Good thing Christmas cookies are just about gone.
11 AM

Walking (treadmill) 23:47 intensity: (4:36 @1) + (19:11 @2) 1.5 mi (15:51 / mi)

Warm up, cool down, and between running segments.

Running (treadmill) 19:39 [3] 1.75 mi (11:14 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

The running part, a mile (11:02) and 3/4 mi (8:37).

Note

AP does not allow characters other than numbers, so I will list the weight that I want to lose. When it gets to or near 0, I will have been successful!
9 AM

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. No stepping today; long warm-up followed by aerobics and abs, then stretching.

Should have walked this afternoon but wimped out. Will do a longer workout tomorrow at the Y.

Sunday Jan 2, 2011 #

9 AM

Note

Goal -- beat 65 minutes if the distance is toward the short end (possible 3-5 mi; based optimistically on 2008 results and who I run near). Distance is yet unknown, so I don't know how realistic the goal is, but maybe it will give me impetus at the finish...

The predicted rain may have something to say about tomorrow's snowshoe race ...
