Orienteering race (Green course) 1:10:03 [4] *** 5.1 km (13:44 / km) +136m 12:07 / km

WCOC--Ansonia. Gorgeous day; clouds lifted earlier than predicted and warmed up into mid 50s so I put on a lighter shirt. Fast running in a lot of the woods (but uphills were soooo slow for me). No technical problems; I was bein careful in the rocky areas and using larger features. Extra careful near the end (9) where I've had trouble before, and it paid off. From last control I cut over to the trail rather than going straight as I knew the punch was straight off the trail and the trail would have better footing.

Nice course by Jim and Rich; thanks for the candy! Happy Halloween!

FR held up for second course in the weekend, though I got the battery low message. Will upload when home; posting from Starbucks near Ansonia.

EDIT: Added FR track; 5.682 km covered. A little extra distance to 1, avoiding some of the green in the swamp, a little wide on 3 to be safe, around on the trail to 5, a bit around on 9 (also to be safe). From the last control angled over the trail so I could run.

Nice running weather at Pound Ridge, low 50s. Misread walls on the way to 1 but then recovered; lost several minutes on parallel features 100 or m west. Decent navigation through 6, even keeping my feet dry! On way to 7, went to stream too early; should have run trail, but mistook where the white vs green was. A bit sloppy on 10, then left the feature in the wrong direction; a combination of bad compass and wrong line to the next control! Oops. Too far SW and hit swamp near stream; then ran out past house towards finish before I realized I still had to visit a boulder east of the parking lot... Many minutes lost. FR and more exact time later. No results posted.

Color copy blowup of old map; map notes were posted but I'm not sure everyone saw them (I did).

EDIT: added FR track (6.17 km, 295m climb)

Note

Ordered a new Garmin 205 from Amazon during their one-day sale. Hope it's in excellent shape and works better than the one I have now (Glen's is a star, mine is mediocre and getting to be a dud).

Mine loses battery after about 2 hours, and was unusable for more than 1 race last weekend (attempted to charge it overnight but it didn't respond the next morning).

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

After class, met a club member to pass off O equipment. Then came home and pulled out some of the weeds I'd
been neglecting before the showers returned.

Not looking forward to winter.

Note

GPS track from Brown Qualifier on Saturday. I should have left the trail earlier for # 2. As it was, I got caught up in the green (greenbriar) - yuck.

Using exercise balls. One of only a few in class able to do roll-ups with feet up on the ball. Did a lot of back and hip warm-up and stretching before class got underway.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Good to get out the kinks and stiffness from the weekend's runs.

Right hamstring tightened up on me on the drive home yesterday, where I couldn't use cruise control (Rt 2 to Troy). Not quite a cramp, but quite uncomfortable until I was able to stretch it out. Dinner at Albany Pump Station where we were bad and had salmon with gorgonzola topping, and chocolate cream pie in addition to beer. ;-)

Orienteering race (Brown classic) 56:23 [4] *** 3.2 km (17:37 / km) +70m 15:53 / km
spiked:9/10c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

NEOC day of the a-meet weekend, on Baldwin Hill in Ashburnham, MA; set by Dean Sturtevant. Nice brown course, though some could argue some of the controls placements were orange-ish (1, 2, 4). The 5-6-7-8 loop was a nice test.

Another good run, surprisingly. I didn't want to jinx myself yesterday, but I managed to pull off a decent weekend--all three races with minimal errors. Last time I did that was at the Sycamore Scramble last February. :-)

Only control I had a bit of trouble with was 7, the water stop. Got in the area, thought I crossed the larger reentrant SW w/rock in it and headed mostly north but didn't see next reentrant -- I kind of looped around it. Lots of other people around, including Sharon who'd passed me coming out of 6. I never saw here again after 8 and she finished almost 10 minutes ahead -- very nice run. I ended up 4th on brown today behind her, Gail (nicely done!) and Peter Amram; 1st F55.

Awards yesterday (based on Finals only) were white hand towels with orienteering symbols in a grid. Today's complemented the towels--little soap leaves in a holder (similar to these), with the event logo sticker on the outside. Very cute.

Orienteering race (Brown middle) 26:31 [5] *** 2.1 km (12:38 / km) +65m 10:56 / km
spiked:7/8c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Fall Foliage festival at PineHill near Winchester, MA; 'qualifier.'

Made it to the start after my name was called, still attaching my compass, e-punch, etc, but started on time. So that was my warm up. ;-)

Took it fairly slow to the first control to be sure I was on the right trail and ended up cutting to the other trail anyway for a better attack and more gradual climb. Lost maybe 30-40 sec on 2 staying on trail a bit too long but figured out I was in the snaggy green reentrant SW of it. Dubious control descriptions on 3 and 4, but no trouble finding them. Slow around spur to 6 but good from there in. 6-7 I took the right/west trail to avoid the blind up and over off the main trail. Felt fast for once--maybe all that resting up this week was good for something.

1st F55 / 3rd on Brown. FR track when I get home tomorrow.

EDIT: added FR track, which says I covered 2.63 km and only 35 m climb.

Orienteering race (Brown middle) 35:21 [5] *** 2.8 km (12:38 / km) +85m 10:58 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Since there was such a long gap between the morning and afternoon races (done by 10 am; fist PM starts not until 1:30 or later), we strolled from parking to Starbucks and sat in the warmth, talking with Craig W who was also there. I had several nice conversations with people today, catching up with some; just chatting with others.

Got to start area (very close to qualifier start) and found I had one of the latest start times because of their seeding system. Good thing it was warmer than earlier.

'A' final, only because there were only 5 in my age group.

Note

Editing entries is really hard on the iPod when you have text size way large..

Good run; minor hesitations at 8 (got a few feet away and lost confidence but there was a crowd - d'oh!) and 11 where Gail had a better route I think.

Sharon had trouble on the 1st control, and Hans B also must have a bit more difficulty, as I ended up 1st on Brown. Gotta see what happens tomorrow.
9 PM

Note

After looking at my quali map under good light and with a magnifier, I find that the control descriptions for 3 and 4 are correct---but the features are under the blue north line. So it's lousy OCAD, not bad descriptions. North line should be under map features.

I surpassed 10,000 visitors to my log and didn't notice until now. Must have been during the weekend when I wasn't paying much attention.

Thanks for dropping by, y'all. ;-)

Once again, didn't feel like doing anything after. Catching up on sleep this week. Maybe next week I'll have the energy to do more.

Helped slog water up hill and to a couple controls with group on Wednesday. Three climbs plus some distance on top.

Led group of APO volunteers back to trail, ~ 700m?, without a map and hit it 20m from intended goal. ;-)

Due to errands, arrived too late for Pilates class, so I did my own thing. I tried out the Expresso exercise bike program and did a "6.33 mi" course, finishing about 1:40 behind the pacer (partly because I started off slow, fiddling with headphones and my iPod).

Afterward, did some other exercises including ab moves, side leg raises and balancing on a wobble board; plus pull downs.

Got up from the computer and took a walk down past the bridge with Glen to see how the reconstruction is coming along. Looks like they're almost done and getting ready to finishing grading and seeding the slope nearby.

Time is a guess.

Stumbled across this while reading e-mail (Google Alerts) today. I suspect it was noted by others before.

Using bands. My band was a bit on the stronger-than-usual side and my shoulders/upper arms were tight afterwards. Otherwise a good effort.

Didn't feel like dong anything else, so I didn't.

In Chatham. Rainy day made the room a bit humid, but stepping was good. Upper abs a bit sore from yesterday's Pilates class (she warned us!) but not uncomfortable.

And no return of the runny nose! I'm glad it was a one-day thing.

Nose isn't running today. Either it was a very mild, short-lived virus, or some weird allergic reaction.

Note
(rest day)

Skipped ex clas to get my car looked at again--smoky exhaust when starting cold engine, a new symptom since they fixed a bunch of stuff, but they said not to worry. Hmph.

A drippy nose today. Hope it's a really mild cold and not one of the nasty ones that goes around and knocks you down for three weeks. I need to be in fine shape for the NEOC meet. And it wouldn't do to give my cold to 400+plus people registered for the ameet...

Orienteering race (Lowlander) 4:02:50 [3] 13.6 km (17:51 / km) +415m 15:30 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Perfect weather for the Highlander/Lowlander, upper 40s to upper 50s at finish; mostly sunny with a bit of a breeze. PG has posted the maps; the Lowlander did maps 1 and 3.

The Highlander started 1/2 hour before the Lowlander, so it was fun to see some of the the other runners as legs criss-crossed. Finish was at the parking area near Kanawaukee Circle. There were about 20 of us on the Lowlander. We walked to the start up a trail past K-Circle onto the Polebrook Mtn map (S and E of the cricle). I was through the first part and back to the map exchange/aid station at about 1 hour 54 minutes, with a mistake exiting # 6 -- SSW instead of WSW -- such that I looped about 150 m too far out of the way, about 3 minutes lost.

LL segment 2/HH segment 4 was on the portion of Sebago Lake map S and W of the parking area, as far as the hill west of Sebago Beach before we headed back in. AliC passed me on the way to 23 (my 13th); Sam and Hilary punched the subsequent control just a bit ahead of me; so I suspected Ali would be the fastest female and she was (Will Hawkins aka 'feet' was fastest male).

Fastest male's time on the LL was around 1:45 (or maybe 145 minutes which would be 2:25), I think; fastest female was around 2:43. Just to show the depth of field, I was second fastest female on the Lowlander (of 4 who finished; a few others DNF'd). :-) The Highlander had a dozen or so women.

FR measured 15.13 km, 528 m climb

Thanks again to HVO for a great event. I actually didn't feel too bad out there -- guess all those hikes up to the high spots at Moreau are good for something. :-)
