Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Y-ing again. Started snowing lightly before I left home; had to clean a couple of inches off my car when I left, but that's about all we got (it's flurrying lightly again now, a bit before midnight).

Fitness equipment warm up/down 5:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Warm-up on the elliptical while waiting for a treadmill! (Okay, it's break week for college students...) Fortunately, one opened up right in front of me.

Running (treadmill) 16:27 [3] 1.5 mi (10:58 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Some at 5.2 mph, some at about 5.7 or 5.8, incline 0.5-2%.

Walking 7:20 [2] 0.5 mi (14:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

4.2 mph...

Walking warm up/down 4:30 [1] 0.25 mi (18:01 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Note

At midnight will celebrate 40 years with my sweetie... :-)

(Note, this isn't a wedding anniversary.)

Note

Watched "Baby Mama" on DVD...not a super-great movie, but entertaining in places. I liked Steve Martin's take on his character, and the other SNL contributors. Grade: B

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Back to the Y after a long weekend away. The lady I encouraged to go to Pilates last week also went on Thursday and was back again today -- I think she likes it. :-) Used the large exercise ball as a prop; weights for a couple of arm exercises. Left arm between shoulder and elbow didn't like the reverse plank I did last week and still bothers, but will be better soon, I'm sure.

Walking (treadmill) 29:38 [3] 2.0 mi (14:49 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Walked on treadmill, 1st mile at speed 4.2, incline 1% (MHR 114); 2nd mile upped the incline (2.5-5%) with varied speeds (MHR 125).

Walking warm up/down 4:27 [1] 0.25 mi (17:49 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Note

Took a short walk around the Rockvale outlets in PA (near where we're staying while visiting family) to get the cobwebs out since we've been in the process of sitting and eating and talking and riding in the car for the past several days (hey, it's been raining...that's our excuse...). Sunny and mid 40's today.

Hope the weather holds out until we're home.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y. Talked an acquaintance, who happened to be entering the Y the same time as me (who normally does strength and machines in the fitness room), into joining me in the Pilates class. I think she liked it; she plans to go back on Thursday (she has the week off so was there during the day).

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 12:23 [1] 0.75 mi (16:31 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Before and after running.

Running (treadmill) 17:22 [3] 1.5 mi (11:35 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

A test run to see if I'm ready to restart. Calf/soleus didn't bother me; it was a bit tight afterward (despite gentle stretching) -- not painful, though. Kept the distance short so as not to stress it too much.

Monday Dec 21, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Last class before the holidays (at least for me). Pilates tomorrow, and I'll attempt a run (see how my calf/soleus feels) or at least a treadmill hike. Then walks over the long weekend...

Sunday Dec 20, 2009 #

Note

Glen photographed (and I posted the picture of) a bird oddity yesterday near our bird feeder. See his log for pic.

Cookies today (snickerdoodles with red and green sugars).

Watched Slumdog Millionnaire, finally. What a movie. (Rented the dvd which we played on our old 27" TV...really hard to read the captions sometimes.)

Saturday Dec 19, 2009 #

Note

Made fudge for gifts. Using a microwave recipe makes it that much easier. Cookies tomorrow?

Except for during the middle of the day it's been hard to breathe through my nose as I'm dealing with the head cold Glen brought home last week. Thus my mouth is getting extra dry.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, using free weights (so I went light as I've done weights every day so far this week and feeling it). Could feel my abs hours later.

Walked the mall end to end again today (looking for an elusive item) so that's good for another 1/2 mile.

Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Normal routine, with sufficient steps for everyone. :-) Weights felt heavy...

Walking 20:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked to the P.O. to mail a few items and buy stamps for Christmas cards...

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, using exercise balls (which makes everything tougher) and weights. Tough workout; I'm still feeling it in my legs and shoulders 6 hours later.

Note

Walked the malls looking for Christmas gifts; ~ 3/4 mi.

Monday Dec 14, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Because there was a shortage of steps (due to Jennifer having to move them out of the building because it was rented for parties) we did the class where half does step while the other half does strength circuits of different exercises (bicep curls, plie squats, Superman, bench press, etc.). The step segment lasted about 12 minutes and the circuits were 1-min each around once, and then around again for 30 sec ea. Good to shake it up once in awhile. :-)

Friday Dec 11, 2009 #

Note

Brought wood in (we have a woodstove to supplement our heating system) and refilled the cart. Cold! (But not as cold as Laramie or Wisconsin....)

Thursday Dec 10, 2009 #

Hiking long (treadmill) 1:05:00 [3] 4.14 mi (15:42 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y.
On Tuesday the Pilates instructor said there'd be a substitute in for her today, so I skipped the class and did my own thing. Settled onto a different treadmill than usual (one of the newer ones, with different programs), which started out counting down from 60 minutes. Speed on 3.8-4.0 mph, and incline from 1-6.5% in a random pattern.
Last 5 minutes (0.25 mi) were at cool-down speed (3 mph).

Also did 2 x 12 adductor exercises on the machine, wt. 75 lbs.

Shoveling (strength) 10:00 [1]

Shoveled a path to the road, birdfeeder, and cleaned out around the paper box (no newspaper -- suspect the delivery man doesn't have his snow tires on yet, if he has any). Then walked down to mailboxes and shoveled them out too (ours and 3 neighbors'). We got maybe 4" of snow mixed with rain; it's above freezing now so some of it's melting/packing down.

Exercise class canceled for today.

Fitness equipment 15:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Was considering attending the spin class this morning, but at 10 minutes prior (when they say to show up if you're new, so you can get set up on a bike) there were only a few big burly guys in the room (no instructor named 'Barb')... so I wimped out.

Sat and pedaled at the recumbent bike in the fitness room instead for as long as I could before numbness set in (body/seat, not brain). :-)

Walking (treadmill) 23:43 [2] 1.5 mi (15:49 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Walked on treadmill until Pilates class was about to start; incline between 2.5 and 5% to avoid stretching the calf/soleus too much.

Cooldown, 3:30, 0.2 mi.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Pilates class, with bands today, so I might feel some muscles tomorrow. They really do provide good resistance. Had to do one or two moves standing (again) because I still can't put weight on my right knee (sharp pain only when kneeling; residual effect of a fall at the US champs in Wisconsin where I hit that spot on a downed tree or branch).

Monday Dec 7, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. All floor exercises (plus abs and stretching, of course) because the building is/was rented for holiday parties last weekend and this coming, so the steps are put away/unavailable. I took care not to stress my right calf/soleus even more. Iced it this afternoon.

Sunday Dec 6, 2009 #

Note

Raked and carried away a few bushel basket-loads of leaves that had settled in the driveway rut after the last windy day. They had been driven over a few times, and covered by snow overnight so were wet, but it was warm enough that they weren't all frozen together.

Will hold off on running for a couple more days, at least. Maybe try the spinning class Tuesday morning at the Y?

Saturday Dec 5, 2009 #

Walking 30:56 [2] 2.0 mi (15:28 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked to test out the right leg. I'm tending to favor that leg, and a short jog on a flat surface confirmed it's sore (duh) and not fit for running on until it heals. From looking at an article on leg anatomy and injuries, it seems to be a strain of the right soleus muscle(s) around the under the achilles. Boo hiss.

Friday Dec 4, 2009 #

Note

Calves (esp. right) still tight/sore since last weekend's O activities. Think I might skip night-O. Gentle stretching hasn't helped; going down stairs is tricky (doable, but tricky to get the balance right on the uncertain muscles).

Thursday Dec 3, 2009 #

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, with rings. Didn't seem as intense as promised, though I may feel it more tomorrow. Decided not to use the treadmill today because it was beautiful out (60+ in December!), so...

Hiking 50:25 [2] 2.9 mi (17:23 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

I hiked at Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Hadn't been there in awhile, especially with leaves off the trees, and had a couple food items to pick up that I can only get in western MA, for some reason; so I killed two birds with one stone as the saying goes. (Not that I advocate killing birds.)

Note

Forerunner said 2.79 miles; ST 3.0. About 130 m elevation difference over the whole hike; no big hills.

Wednesday Dec 2, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Not as tiring as Monday. Right calf still tight and sore.

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

"Zumba" class at the Y. Took a quilting friend who had the day off and we tried out the Zumba class because I had never done it. Since I'm not used to the dance routines I couldn't work hard enough to really break a sweat -- think I'll go back to running (or hiking) on the treadmill. :-)

Pilates class 55:00 [0]

After Zumba (which looks like a lot of fun for some of the folks there -- I just don't have the coordination). Modified the side planks (outer thigh lifts instead) and other exercises done on the knees.
